This election has been concluded. I don't know where Dele Momodu will be now. Every time, you will see him on TV saying, 'He was born in Ife', thinking that would make Adeleke come to the ADC side. Sorry, Adeleke belongs to us, and we all belong to President Tinubu.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has commended Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, for paying him and President Bola Tinubu a visit, declaring that the governor now firmly belongs to their political camp.

Wike made this known on Friday while speaking during an inspection exercise in Abuja, insisting that Adeleke’s visit was proof of where his political loyalty truly lies.

He said the coming 2027 general election would be more revealing than previous ones, taking a swipe at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over claims that the party contributed to Adeleke’s re-election victory in Osun State.

“I told you that the 2027 election would be the most in-depth election. I have told ADC who are talking about, oh, they helped Adeleke to win, they just wanted to go ahead and harvest what they never planted, you know,” Wike said.

The FCT Minister maintained that Adeleke’s visit confirmed his unwavering support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 polls.

“So, Adeleke is fully supporting Mr President,” he added.

Wike further disclosed that the ongoing political realignment across the country was far from over, noting that more political groups and figures were expected to align with the Tinubu-led camp in the coming weeks.

“And so, we went to bed last night and encouraged ourselves to continue. And the next few weeks, watch what is going to happen. You will see a larger rainbow coalition in this country supporting Mr President,” he stated.

He rounded off his remarks with a direct declaration of Adeleke’s political allegiance.

“Adeleke belongs to us, and we all belong to Mr President. Thank you, brother,” Wike said.

The obsession with politicians is what I find difficult to phatom. Was Sanwo-olu not with Tinubu when he lost Lagos to Obi? I have never heard APC and their lackeys say the people are with them. It's always one governor or the other that has endorsed them. Akpabio, Barau, Benjamin Kalu, Oyetola, 15 governors plus 60 billion naira all endorsed Ambo in Osun. Did he win? Tinubu's style of politics is "attaché by force". He always seeks to whitewash his unpopularity by latching on to other politicians, thinking he can reap from their own popularity but that style of politics is becoming redundant and popularity is not transferable by mere association.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has openly boasted that he assisted certain elements within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in deploying the judiciary to frustrate the Osun State local government allocation lawsuit.

In a video now circulating widely on social media and obtained by SaharaReporters, Wike made the claim while addressing a crowd in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The former Rivers governor accused the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, of benefitting from judicial actions against the Osun State Government without knowing those who did the work behind the scenes.

Magaji disclosed this while speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily, on Thursday.

The Kano politician also argued that there was no proof that Atiku promised Wike the vice president position as claimed.

The PDP committee had recommended the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa; Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel and Wike.

The committee, however, scored Wike above the other two contenders but Atiku decided to settle for Okowa. A decision that has since unsettled Wike’s camp.

Magaji, however, claimed that Wike lobbied to be scored ahead of others, adding that the Rivers State governor should not be trusted with important positions in the country.

2023: PDP and politics of healing Wike’s self-inflicted injury

Then, the race began in earnest for three years now, reaching a frenzy with the works of the two PDP committees on zoning. The first was the Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi committee on the zoning of the PDP party offices. The Ugwuanyi committee quickly told the world the committee’s assignment did not cover zoning the office of the president. Though this was true, the question is: why didn’t the Ugwuanyi committee zone the PDP chairmanship to the North without aligning it to the divide that would produce the PDP presidential flag-bearer? The second committee headed by Gov Samuel Ortom of Benue state was specifically on the zoning of the presidential ticket and, with the votes of the representatives of all the 17 Southern states without any exception, the Committee unanimously recommended throwing open the PDP presidential ticket, which the PDP NEC simply upheld.

One thing irrefutably stands out – Wike shot himself in the leg. Here was a man who had an overarching influence on both committees but could not insist that the ticket be zoned South. Many had wondered why? The reason is also relatively in plain sight: the Southeast factor. As the clamour for zoning of the presidential ticket of the PDP to South reached its crescendo, many had pointed out the fact that though the PDP Constitution had prescribed zoning of the office of the president to be between North and South since the South-west and South-south had taken their turns in producing the president and the vice in this current dispensation in the persons of Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, zoning this time around, should not just be to the South but the Southeast.

Atiku Abubakar went a step further by offering to step down from the race if it would be agreed that the touted zoning to the South would mean micro-zoning to the Southeast. Wike and the rest could not take the Atiku challenge maybe because Atiku would likely back Peter Obi, who was his vice-presidential running mate in 2019 and an ally. The prospects of Peter Obi picking the ticket if PDP zoned South was so real compelling Wike to go for an open contest, believing he could pick it up ahead of Atiku, Tambuwal and Bala Mohammed, given his large war chest.

Some will argue that our elections are unpredictable. But, in reality, all the political parties are operating under the same umbrella. What we see is largely a rotational arrangement. Even before some elections are held, the likely winners have been decided. At that point, casting your vote feels more like fulfilling a civic mandate than actually determining who will win.
No one is discouraging you from voting but that's the reality.
