GloriousGbola:The question was ..... "How does someone earning 100,000 a month, afford a rent of 1 million in Lagos?" I think Hamzat answered well. There's no need for a 100k who's gross is 1.2 million a year, to go and rent an apartment of 1 million He also stressed that if you're single, try staying with a relative or parent so you can save. I wonder how this is a bad response.. |

| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by liveLongNprospa(m): 6:01pm On Aug 22 |
izzou:The issue is the rent being 1m. You are supposed to be able to afford a selfcon on a 100k salary. Your goal as a governor is giving us solutions on how to counter the high cost of rent in Lagos state and not tell me or every other young person the reality they already are forced to live as a solution. 2017, a selfcon in Gbagada was 200k or less if you enter the bariga side. If you worked in Ikeja Electric and earned 120k as a starter, you could comfortably pay that rent then. By 2022 it was around 400k. Now it's like he said 1m. What is the plan to reduce or stop the steady increase of rent? Whats the plan to make the state for more attractive to companies that can pay salaries for people to afford cheap housing. After all they as government of Lagos state have joined Tinubu to claim the economy is stabilized |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 6:05pm On Aug 22 |
liveLongNprospa:Go back and listen to the interview again That was the question. He wasn't asked what are his plans to reduce rent. He wasn't asked any of all these stuffs you wrote there. The question is simple "How can someone earning 100k pay a rent of 1 million in Lagos?" How exactly is that answer a bad one? I'm not defending his policies or whether Sanwo-Olu is more brilliant. His answer was right and compassionate. |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by GloriousGbola: 6:06pm On Aug 22 |
izzou:The point I was making is that is exactly what is happening in the US right now. There is a global economic downturn and young people are either doing flatmate arrangement or staying back home with their parents It is not a hidden thing so it is surprising that he is knocking what is happening all around him Reducing rent in Lagos is a non starter 1) high demand 2) yahoo boys have driven up rent costs everywhere Metroline from alakija to marina is up. If there can be a metroline into ogunnstate and into ibadan it Will reduce pressure and demand. I took the metro to marina the other day. 1k okada to the station. 750 train trip. Took me all of 40 minutes. 15 years ago it would have taken me two hours plus by bus. A working metro connecting other cities to Lagos is a start. |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by liveLongNprospa(m): 6:09pm On Aug 22 |
GloriousGbola:Yes because by the time it got to covid19, the price of houses skyrocketed and between then and now those same prices have been dropping back down. Why is the same not happening in Lagos or naija at large since you want to compare Canada and Nigeria then |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by liveLongNprospa(m): 6:11pm On Aug 22 |
izzou:The question is highlighting the problem of astronomical rent prices for basic housing options |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 6:16pm On Aug 22 |
liveLongNprospa:I am sure if they asked him this, he wouldn't say people should live with their parents. What exactly do you propose for the housing challenges in Lagos? Because for me, we are left with few options, and the population keeps increasing. |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 6:19pm On Aug 22 |
GloriousGbola:If you connect a rail to every street in Lagos, it won't change much over time. The population will only spread to those growing areas, and with time, a plot of land in Ayobo will become 80 million. Development needs to spread to other states. Lagos is choked to the core. No number of metroline and anything will keep this problem at bay |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by GloriousGbola: 6:20pm On Aug 22 |
liveLongNprospa:Prices are not dropping down. I regularly read about people living with their parents. The irony of you claiming that covid19 somehow pushed up house rent. liveLongNprospa:It is an owners market. Lagos has the highest number of economic migrants. Look at those 347 uba grad trainees as an example. They were likely in Lagos for 6 months to 1 year. Housing infrastructure cannot keep up with demand, more so when Lagos has a highly speculative real estate market. My fam has a house in festac. In 2011 a similar one was sold for 15m.today it is likely 45 to 60m. So how do you expect rents to remain low if you are looking to live in high brow areas? And your claim of 200k rent for a selfcon in gbagada, the mainland HQ for Lagos upper middle class sounds like a special kind of LAMBA. |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by liveLongNprospa(m): 6:23pm On Aug 22 |
izzou:Then he's not smart enough to understand the implication of that question. And I can't answer that question. But if Lagos state builds even more housing units and actually spends money that they waste and steal on projects like housing (again), it will drive down the price or atleast give more options to youths. Lagos state cannot say there's no money to build atleast 200k units of selfcon year on year. After all how much sanwo Olu babe use buy jewelry? |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by liveLongNprospa(m): 6:30pm On Aug 22 |
GloriousGbola:Lmaooo oga prices of houses in Canada has fallen since after covid19. That is information you can easily search for. I don't know if covid19 was the determinant factor of price increase but I do know it got to it's highest at that time. Like I told Izzou, LASG can afford to build alot more housing units than they currently do and either drive down the market price or at the very least keep it stalled. And when I mean alot, I mean alot more housing units. Also yes in 2017 a selfcon in gbagada Paul Odulaja street cost 200k per annum. I know this because I was living in gbagada. It is an owners market and yet Lagos has refused to be a player in that market. |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 6:33pm On Aug 22 |
liveLongNprospa:So, while agree with you, I still believe that it wouldn't be affordable for a 100k salary earner. Let's assume that the government wades in to build. The cost to build would still remain the same. The project wouldn't be cheaper to build because LASG is the financier So even reselling at a 1% profit won't make it cheaper for a 100k salary earner. Do you agree with this? |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by GloriousGbola: 6:33pm On Aug 22 |
liveLongNprospa:Governments build houses to sell or mortgage to families, not to fresh graduates with low earning power Lagos state has multiple infrastructure challenges it is trying to meet. Energy, water, roads, intracity transport, garbage. |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Kaczynski: 6:36pm On Aug 22 |
GloriousGbola:She literally works for the man. Respect is earned through technical competence and the ability to build systems that actually work not by merging banks or playing corporate dress up. The fact that he corrected a her for calling him by his name is the kind of power trip that makes me want to barf into my own mouth. Ezra downfall was inevitable the second he decided to make his personal life a public spectacle. Elon musk, Sergey brin are good examples of competent founders, they don't care what you call them. |

| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by GloriousGbola: 6:40pm On Aug 22 |
liveLongNprospa:Are more People living with their parents or not? Like I told Izzou, LASG can afford to build alot more housing units than they currently do and either drive down the market price or at the very least keep it stalled. And when I mean alot, I mean alot more housing units.Because the only challenge the govt is facing is affordable housing. There is nothing else Lasg has to work on. It is an owners market and yet Lagos has refused to be a player in that market.Lagos state actually has mortgage schemes. But it should be clear to you that whatever housing estates LASG builds, they will be out of the reach of entry level employees. Also yes in 2017 a selfcon in gbagada Paul Odulaja street cost 200k per annum. I know this because I was living in gbagada.I know exactly how that goes and you do as well even if you want to claim otherwise. A person living in his relatives bq and paying a small sum. |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by GloriousGbola: 6:46pm On Aug 22 |
Kaczynski:There is more to the world than software coding. The irony is that your tech bro overlords are actually unhinged and far more dangerous. Funny that you would call Elon musk a founder. The man took over tesla, took over Twitter, was kicked out of PayPal. He is a hawker of vapor ware. And his life is also a public spectacle with his harem, smoking pot on air and his nazi salutes. It is ironic that you think that building a bank that has stood for over 20 years is not building a system that works |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by liveLongNprospa(m): 6:48pm On Aug 22 |
izzou:Why must they sell the units? Why not rent those units out? Is there any law stopping them from doing that? These are things LASG can actually explore. The idea is to crash the price of rent or stop the increase. Would you admit LASG has not done even close to anything reasonable to solve this issue? |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by GloriousGbola: 6:55pm On Aug 22 |
liveLongNprospa:Yes. Let us start another subsidy that will become a drain on govt resources and will fail. |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by izzou(m): 6:59pm On Aug 22 |
liveLongNprospa:Okay, let's assume they rent. Do you think that with the cost of materials today, a brand new self con will go for 400k a year (40% of a 100k salary earner's earnings)? You know it's not possible. And yes, I agree that the government has not done reasonably enough, and this lapse is showing because there's a serious shortfall of private investors Transportation and logistics in Lagos is a little better and seamless because there's Uber, Bolt, and delivery bikes. All these are product of individuals jumping in. Remove Bolt and Uber and Delivery bikes. How would Lagos be? People are buying lands to build Terrace duplexes at 500 million. Scroll on IG. Nobody is building self con or one bedroom that is affordable. The rest are advising us on mutual funds and stocks; Telling us to invest 100 million on Dangote refinery So we are left with the government building theirs or paying exorbitantly for rubbish. So yes, I agree that enough isn't done, but maybe it is heavily felt because private investors are scarce |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by GloriousGbola: 7:02pm On Aug 22 |
izzou:Investors are actually building for people like prosper who will pay in dollars for a badly built flat in a wonder estate in sangotedo. |
| Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by liveLongNprospa(m): 7:02pm On Aug 22 |
GloriousGbola:When Canada releases its next major update (last was 2021), then you can confidently say more people are living with their parents. I did not say LASG has to work on only one challenge, we are focusing on housing as an issue. Don't be smart with me. Bruh.. You tell me the price of selfcon in 2017 in gbagada? |
