Look at Kano in 8th place out of 11.

Has anyone ever noticed that when it comes to raw data connected to large population statistics, Lagos State is always ahead of Kano State? Be it in number of school children, university graduates, number of homes using electric meters, number of registered phone line users etc, Lagos is pre-eminent over Kano.

But have you also noticed that the only areas where Kano has consistently recorded higher figures than Lagos is in the number of registered voters and number of people living in multi dimensional poverty?

We sit and lament that electricity generation in the country is terrible yet not everyone pays bills. But that's not the fault of Nigerians.

All the electricity distribution companies have consistently sabotaged governments metering programs. If every consumer had a prepaid meter, the issue of unpaid bills wouldn't arise.

I'm talking about data generated from population statistics. Shouldn't the state with the largest population in Nigeria (which is supposed to be kano state) be generating the highest turnover in revenue generated from billing ?

And in other news 60% of metered consumers bypassed their meters.

Metering is not the solution to unpaid bills, nor is it the only cause of unpaid bills. Most nigerians do not want to pay a cost reflective tarrif for electricity. We mostly under pay or do not pay. The result is we get poor power supply.

If you ran a business where the minority of your consumers paid full price for your service, you won't have much of a business would you.

11 ⚫️ Yola β€” ₦6.80bn | ₦4.50bn

National total: ₦328.95bn received | ₦252.87bn billed

The 252.87 bn naira is the total of the values collected as revenue, while the N328.95 bn is the value of the electricity sent to discos by gencos to distribute..

The above explains why Nigeria cannot pay for good electricity.

And here is the cold fact

1. Only 20% of Nigerian consumers pay a cost reflective tarrif. The rest do not
2. For the rest government is supposed to pay a subsidy that covers the losses coming from paying the subsidised prices.. Government is not paying the subsidy
3. The above, ie no 2 has been going on for years.
4. As a result, the electricity sector cannot pay for improved power supply because it is not making enough money
5. On the good news, metering now covers nearly 60% of consumers and only 20% of consumers do not pay for the electricity they consume (that includes your president in aso villa).

And as a result, there is a severe liquidity crisis in the power sector....which is why we do not have light.
Re: See How Much Money Each DISCO Made From Billing by Gbadugbakun(m): 1:31pm On Aug 26
Yet we don't have light. And they're even talking about tarrif increase.
Re: See How Much Money Each DISCO Made From Billing by nairalanda1(m): 1:32pm On Aug 26
And the topic has made front page. I would be posting some stuff here.

The point is, the discos are not making enough money to pay for the cost of producing and transmitting and distributing power, because they are forced by law to charge band B to E Power consumers at a price far below the cost reflective price they charge band A consumers, and the monies made from band A are not enough to subsidise the bands B TO e.

Same issue India is experiencing.

Gbadugbakun:

Heffalump:
What are they billing exactly? Darkness huh
The discos recieved ₦328.95bn worth of electricity from the gencos. And to pay for that bill they raised the following money... ₦252.87bn billed ie from customers.

That means that they need a further 76 billion naira to be able to pay the gencos in full, money they cannot raise because they cannot charge a cost reflective tarrif for most consumers. And because 20% of their consumers are not paying (higher as you go to the North).

Note that discos also have to pay for transformers , poles, wires, and also have to pay running costs and so forth from that 252 billion naira. Since it is not enough to even pay the gencos basic bill, they cannot even pay for all those things. That is why you are buying wires, poles and transformers for them. Again, subsides on power are not paid in full, and even then are not enough.

As a result, you do not have light, because the sector is running at a loss. And the subsidy government is supposed to pay them is not paid. And tinubu self is not paying his bills for electricity on aso rock.

Hence the need for government to pass a law that let's discos charge a cost reflective tarrif, so that in the long run, investment would be attracted, and more money would flow in, and at the end of the day, you would have better power supply.

People living in lagos have a better per capita income compared to people living in Kano and as a result are able to pay the power bills at a higher rate than Kano residents.

Most of Kano state, infact most of KEDC's catchment area (Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina)is rural and made up of lots of villages where people refuse to pay for power or under pay and defend themselves by saying they are too poor to pay for power. Urban areas are no better.

Re: See How Much Money Each DISCO Made From Billing by 9jatriot(m): 1:45pm On Aug 26
Your argument is really sound, but from the position of a devil's advocate, one can argue that most of the energy consumption in Lagos is from industries and commercial enterprises.

Another argument will be purchasing power. There are many Lagosians who are also known to have better purchasing power, so they can have up to 5 units of 2HP AC running concurrently, whereas a household in Kano may not have all of that.
5 units of 2HP Acc for example is 7.5KW, that is more than capable of power up to 20 houses in some places.

Re: See How Much Money Each DISCO Made From Billing by BlackViper(op): 1:45pm On Aug 26
Actually not the case. Billing revenue is dependent on population, not volume.

In other words, Lagosians pay more because they are more in number and not because they are paying at a higher rate. There is no significant disparity between rates charged per unit of electricity consumed in the Lagos and Ikja discos as compared with the Kano disco.

They can never recover all the monies from the energy they buy, this model of buying energy by force is not sustainable.

There is something called AT & C losses, these are caused by leakages in the power distribution channels driving by the underlisted:

1. Obsolete and faulty transformers, cables and power infrastructure

2. Meter by passing facilitated by the DISCO staff themselves and other knowledgeable geeks some of which are ex disco staff.

3. Government entities like MDAs, politicians and those in the barracks who refuse to pay their bills because they own government.

4. Corrupt DISCO officials who divert government subventions and subsidies to building hotels and brothels instead of investing in power infrastructure.

Rather than trying to fix their AT & C losses DISCOs resort to billing innocent consumers by way or estimated billing and ridiculous charges .

There is s limit to which you can bill consumers especially when they dont see the value in what they are getting. They will tell you to come and carry your cables and goto hell as we are seeing now.

Where have you been all these 11 bright years of APC change?
We have had adequate power from when Fashola bragged that he would fix electricity in 6 months if we can get rid of PDP, which we did in 2015.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lba6Uf64Ogc

pendy79:
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, on Sunday evening boasted that he could provide uninterrupted power supply to Lagos residents between six and eight months.

Fashola spoke at the commissioning of 8.5 megawatts Lekki Independent Power Project (IPP), the fifth of such power projects in the last five years in the state.

The governor said the addition of the Lekki IPP was a testament to the fact that stable power does not require rocket science to achieve in the country.

While challenging power distribution companies in the state, Fashola said, β€œLet the Eko DISCOs sign a contract with me, giving part of their concessioning to the state government, in about six to eight months, there will be power in all homes in Lagos State,” Fashola said.

He added, β€œSo, let no one say that he has no money to deliver power for the entire country. This is the limit to which the law allows us to do, but we have done this to make a statement that power can be generated. So, when they come with lies that power is impossible, you can tell them that we have power here; we make it possible”.

The project, courtesy of the state government, in partnership with Heritage Bank, is to serve Lagos State Water Corporations in Lekki Phase 1, Oniru, Victoria Island and Ikoyi, as well as over 25km of public lightening in the Lekki axis.

Not exactly, it is also dependent on ability to pay...plus someone upthread has also brought in another angle, that you should look at.

Power payment outside Lagos and Abuja has been relatively poor. People do not want to pay cost reflective tarrifs or even the subsidised tarrifs, because they cannot afford to.

The sad thing is that Nigeria needs to have people pay a cost reflective tarrif because electricity is so expensive.

Better to get a proper census done., by the way.

One more thing, access to electricity in Lagos is far higher than in Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states . There are large swathes of those states with millions who have no access to grid supplied power. Lagos on the other hand is covered totally.

They cannot fix it because government is forcing them to charge below their costs..ie not letting them charge a cost reflective tarrif for most consumers.

See the above figure. Discos are able to raise less revenue than they need to pay the bills GENCOS send them, so at the end, there is going to be corruption, and issues with fixing power.

You do not have the same issues in african countries that charge cost reflective tarrifs.

Whatever! I still have not understood the importance or the idea behind Bands thing.

Imagine getting 177.6 units of electricity for 50k and this does not even last half a month at times, all in the name of band A.

Meanwhile, some people in other bands get over 280 units for just 10k undecided undecided
This is complete madness and whosoever is behind the band idea is crazy, completly Mad!

Why not make electricity available to all and bill everyone according to their uses?

This Band A crap is a conplete scam! sad sad
