The Miracle of the Qur'an
The Qur'an presents one of the strongest signs of the prophethood of Muhammad (S.A.W.): its extraordinary language and the circumstances through which it was delivered.
Muhammad (S.A.W.) was described in the Qur'an as the Ummi Prophet—the unlettered Prophet (Qur'an 7:157–158).

He was not known as a trained poet, literary scholar or student of the previous scriptures. The Qur'an itself emphasizes this:
“You did not recite any scripture before it, nor did you write it with your right hand; otherwise the falsifiers would have had doubt.” (Qur'an 29:48)

This becomes particularly significant when we consider the society in which the Qur'an was revealed. Pre-Islamic Arabia was a culture that placed extraordinary value on poetry, eloquence and mastery of language. Skilled poets were highly respected and linguistic excellence was a source of prestige.
Yet Muhammad (S.A.W.), the unlettered Prophet, began conveying words of remarkable linguistic power, rhetorical precision, rhythm, structure and depth. The Qur'an was neither conventional poetry nor ordinary prose. It possessed a distinctive style that challenged the linguistic standards of the very people who were most qualified to appreciate and evaluate Arabic eloquence.

Indeed, the Qur'an issued a direct challenge:
“And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our servant, then produce a surah like it...”. (Qur'an 2:23)

The challenge was significant. Muhammad (S.A.W.), was not merely claiming to be an exceptionally talented speaker; he was declaring that these words were not his own composition but the revelation of Allah.

The Qur'an therefore points to a remarkable contrast: an unlettered man from a society renowned for its literary culture delivering a scripture whose linguistic character Muslims believe cannot be attributed to ordinary human authorship. His lack of formal literary and scriptural education did not make the Qur'an less remarkable; from the Islamic perspective, it made its emergence through him even more compelling.

This is why the Qur'an's miracle cannot be reduced merely to its beautiful language. Its preservation, profound message, theological coherence, transformative power and extraordinary linguistic character all form part of the broader Islamic case for its divine origin.

The Qur'an itself makes the ultimate claim:
“It is not the word of a poet—little do you believe.” (Qur'an 69:41)

For Muslims, therefore, the Qur'an remains the enduring miracle of Muhammad (S.A.W.): the revelation conveyed by the unlettered Prophet, challenging humanity to produce anything comparable to it.
