Before we get carried away by political talking points about the return of fuel subsidy. We should ask ourself where the money that was used to subsidize fuel came from. It comes from the federation account. The subsidy is deducted before whatever is left is shared between the federal state and local government. The subsidy was initially introduced in the 1970s when we had a military regime, so it was easy for the head of state (Gen. Gown and subsequently Gen. Obasanjo) to introduce subsidy by a simple military decree. The subsidy structure then was what was later continued since the return to democracy. Now that the subsidy has been removed, what will it take for a president to reintroduce it. Since the cost of subsidy comes from the federation account before monthly allocation, the president will have to convince the 36 state governors and 774 local governments that the cost of subsidy should be deducted before sharing what is left between the each level of government. THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE. If the president make the deduction without the consent of the states and local governments, they can take federal government to the supreme court for unauthorized deduction. Lets even assume that the present is able to miraculously get the consent of states and local government, how will they eventually fare. Presently, the recurrent and capital budget of the governments are based on the money received without subsidy. That means if subsidy was to return, they will get less money to use which will eventually lead them to defaulting on their obligations and take more debt. |

We appreciate your grammar, but we want subsidy back. Unfortunately, you do not understand budgeting and allocation. Go and study before coming to comment on topics you are not schooled on. FULL THROTTLE SUBSIDY RETURN! If you do not like it move to Togo. |

Validated:It sounds like a nice slogan you have there, and yes, nigerians are suffering, but subsidy coming back = more debt = more suffering for all = defeats the purpose you wanted it for. Yes, even if you fight corruption and even if you remove tinubu and replace him with Obi or atiku. Our budget, thanks to decades of mismanagement, especially since 2015 when APC took over and ignored good advice, is now dependent on loans for funding half of it. And we got a mega debt to pay off, which ironically is forcing the government to borrow more, more than any past government self. And you want to add subsidy? Right. Anyway, make una dey choose ya poision...and yeah, tinubu still has to go, because he is bad on security, power supply and so on, but subsidy removal? Not one of his bad decsiions. All in all GEJ should have had balls to tell those ojota people, including buhari and tinubu, to shut up, sit down and rest in 2011. By now, there would have been more functioning refineries with jobs added . ANd maybe NNPC would also add its own working refineries. And I do not support APC. I just don't think we got the money, even if we fight corruption. |

If you think someone is stubborn because he's making "hard decisions" that do not affect him and his family members, there's always another someone more stubborn. Atiku has said he will restore subsidy. He too is stubborn. I'm fine with that. ![]() |

WHY DOES APC HATE GOOD LIFE? What did good life do to you people? WHY HAS YOUR PARTY PUSHED FOR VERY TERRIBLE AND A LIFE OF EXTREME HARDSHIP? Is it in your manifesto? You are not even reasoning about about partial payments or anything to ease the suffering. You just want increased hardship so we will be worshipping your leaders. |

Whoever will return subsidy in 2027 has my vote. If Obi says no to subsidy, I’ll gladly vote for Atiku. If BAT returns subsidy, I will vote BAT. My candidate is SUBSIDY!!! |

nairalanda1:lol. You guys joke a lot and it is so funny to see. You in particular seems to be the most confused poster on this forum. You know what os right yet, you don't want to back the first president who is finally doing the right thing because Jonathan was defeated in 2015. Is that patriotism to you? Who told the person you responded to is interested in a better Nigeria? That guy just like you only want Tinubu defeated irrespective of the disastrous policy they are pushing to achieve their political goal. If not, why will any sensible and patriotic person be pushing for the return of subsidy in 2027? If Tinubu is bad on insecurity and power supply, who then is strong on power supply and insecurity among Peter Obi and Atiku? Is it the incompetent and liverless Peter Obi that will face the north in tackling insecurity? Is it Fulani man Atiku that will face his fulani brothers who are the ones backing him? Even a Buhari looked away, so who be Atiku? In terms of power, can Atiku who want to bring back subsidy on PMS or a desperate and weak character like Obi remove the subsidy in the electricity sector? Can the investment needed in the power sector be fully made without FG removing electricity subsidy like you have always asked for? Do you see and Atiku or Obi doing that? So, why are you deceiving yourself? Learn to be pragmatic in making political decisions and not emotional. It is only a Tinubu that can forcefully implement state police to end insecurity and also carry out the needed reforms in the power sector to unlock the needed investment in the sector. Any other option other than Tinubu is simply wishing a disaster on the country. |

AMINDA:That's the advantage of being an incumbent BAT doesn't need to wait for election before returning subsidy. He can win the election now, now if he wants. But you see....BAT likes hard decisions . He wants to prove his unpopularity at the polls. So be it. ![]() |

seunmsg:Sorry, but your party is responsible for the economic mess that brought about the the massive debt that we are in that forced it to go , and that is forcing us to borrow more worsening the debt. Your party is also responsible for strangling the power sector by not removing subsidy on it , by not paying the subsidy owed them, and by not letting them charge a cost reflective tarrif, meaning we have issues with light. And then there is the massive insecurity, and the lack of productivity, and the poor revenue. So, yawn. |
| Re: Why The Return Of Fuel Subsidy Is Impossible by seunmsg(m): 8:02pm On Aug 24 |
nairalanda1:Yeah, the country had no debt when your party was in power. The economy was so good that Nigerians had to vote out your useless brother. It is even a shame that a Jonathan supporter is talking about insecurity. Under PDP, Nigeria experienced the worst insecurity ever. Abuja was being bombed daily and almost half of the roads in the FCT were blocked due to insecurity. In the north east, 27 local governments were under boko haram administration. In the north central, fulani insurgents reigned Supreme. Chibok girls kidnapping became an international shame. So, what record do you have in the Jonathan era that gives you the audacity to come here and talk about insecurity? And talking about power, who made a mess of the privatization by selling the discos and gencos to politicians who lack the financial capacity to invest in the sector? Who signed payment of electricity subsidy into the privatization arrangement? After privatization why did Jonathan fail to remove subsidy in the sector as part of the privatization arrangement? Why did he fail to put in place a cost reflective tariff? Now let's face reality, tell me which of your candidate has the capacity to remove electricity tariff? Tell me which candidate has the capacity to solve insecurity problems? There is only one person on the ballot who can tackle these problems and he's Tinubu. No one else. So, you can keep lying to yourself, that's your problem. PMS subsidy is gone for good thanks to Tinubu. Multiple exchange rate regime is gone for good thanks to Tinubu. In the second term, electricity and whatever is left of the insecurity wil be dealt with by Bola Tinubu. Your incompetent Peter Obi will never become the president of Nigeria. |

Peter Obi was never in the race to begin with. Saying he will never be president is just overkill. Peter Obi knows who he's really working for. ADC has huge traction now. Dont distract yourself with Obi . Obi is not your problem. |

olaNL:Good analysis. But most of the subsidy people are really not against the removal of subsidy, they are only interested in using it as a campaign tool to get tinubu out. Which is a good thing for me, by the way. But I still don't like their strategy. Spooks foreign investors, and all that, |
