Relief may be on the way for thousands of drivers stuck for months on the Benin-Asaba highway.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, on Wednesday ordered the company handling the road to leave the site immediately. He said the firm has failed to fix the road and should write the Federal Government to end its contract, as reported by Champion Newspaper.

Speaking at a meeting in Edo Government House, Benin, Umahi said the concessionaire, Benin Asaba Expressway Concession Company, has not added any value to the project.

“You should be removed from this site. You don’t have the capacity to fix this road,” the minister said. He also asked the company to clear all blockages causing traffic jams right away.

Umahi directed the Ministry of Works to get the Independent Engineer to measure the work done so far. He warned that any bad work, including asphalt removed against the contract, will not be paid for. The cost of repairs will also be added.

To ease the pain on road users, he said the bad parts should be rebuilt quickly under the Independent Engineer. He also asked BAECC to provide a proper drainage plan, return all removed asphalt, and stop water from flowing onto the road.

But BAECC’s Head of Legal, Peterson Fabian, pleaded for more time to talk. “This is not final. Let us engage more so we can find a way forward,” he said.

Senator Allwell Onyesoh called the situation terrible. He said the wrong company was given the job. “This is a big lesson on concessions in Nigeria,” he noted.

Edo Governor Monday Okpebholo said he was disappointed. After 16 months, he said, nothing has changed on the road.

“The suffering is too much, especially for Edo people. This is a waste of money. If they were serious, part of the road would have been done by now,” Okpebholo said. He urged Umahi to act fast because the road is important to the whole country.

The meeting ended with the Works Ministry set to start the process of ending the concession and fixing critical parts of the road to end the gridlock.

The question now is what happens to the money collected for this project? Are they going to recover it? Are they awarding it to new contractors?

Hire and fire. Rinse and repeat. That's all Umahi has been doing for the past 3 years. No single project commissioned. Just sycophancy every now and then, garnished with a little bit of attack on Peter Obi.

Just shows lack of professionalism in the approach of the federal government. No clear plan, alternative routes, contingencies etc. No road map developed and progress tracking. Just give contractor contract.

Yeye dey smell.

They are just trying to save face .
What happens to Benin-Warri Road, Benin-Auchi road, Auchi-Okene road, Okene-Abuja road, Suleja-Minma Road, Minna-Mokwa road? All these roads and many others are dead traps

Road users spend days on these roads. The other day it took me 24 hours to drive from Benin to Kaduna. Tinubu is just incompetent. Always putting blames on others, but himself.

Our votes will speak for us next year.

If they give you contract without funds, what can you do? Don't you know that, funds approved to a contractor determine the level and speed of work?

Tinubu is just incompetent. We dey wait am for North next year.

The road was concessioned, no? The private company will use their own funds to build the road, even normal contracts, one would expect contractors to use their own money to start, except maybe this is not how its done in Naija

BTW what was the ministry doing all these 16months when they were removing the asphalt?
Re: FG Sacks Benin-asaba Road Contractor Over Months Of Gridlock by Lifediary: 11:11am On Aug 27
1st question: How did the company end up winning the bid for the road construction?

2nd question: When was the company registered and what is the company's job portfolio with regards to road construction?

3rd question: Does the ministry of works just give out road construction contracts without due monitoring?... If there was due monitoring, tax-paying citizens wouldn't have experienced this man-made hardship resulting from the greed of government officials.

The major question remains: who will compensate Nigerians who went into heavy financial losses due the incompetence of the government with regards to this particular road?

*Please, don't be deceived with the word "concession". No this and know peace✌🏾

So you're so Ignorant to know the Road is Concession?

I doubt everything you dey wail about on this thread is the truth sef

The company is meant to rehabilitate the road and recoup their money by Tollining the road

We shall meet at on January 16 2027
Re: FG Sacks Benin-asaba Road Contractor Over Months Of Gridlock by LeeMason(m): 12:11pm On Aug 27
Okpehbolo did not say anything meaningful about the road. As usual he only talked about Tinubu. I’m sure even on his wife’s birthday he thanks Tinubu for adding another year to her life

Audio sacking
So you don't have money to fix existing roads that's handling huge traffic and you're giving them to concessionaires to sell the asphalt and use the proceeds to buy cement but you have 1.5trn to give to Hi-Tech to build the highway of fraud to nowhere?

All this one is for the camera. Did the concessionaire remove the asphalt without your notice or approval?

Why concession a critical road to the SS you claim to love so much and then dash out 1.5trn to build section 1 of the highway of fraud. Do you know that 1.5trn will fix that Benin Asaba road and still remain change?
Do you know the amount needed to fix Benin-Asaba road is just 200bn? That's less than one sixth of the amount already expended on the highway of fraud

Even the road is still confusing Okphebolor. How this man became a governor of a state like Edo needs LOL. Is it now Umahi realised the contractor is not performing after 16 months, is he not evaluated? Nigeria now knows APC has nothing to offer. grin grin grin grin

The Road was not concession anything. Tinubu didn't fund the project. This is the same with all the road projects in the Country.

Tinubu is just incompetent and clueless

Guess why the contractor is delaying? Definitely because of same government. It'll shock you to learn that the contractor has not been paid or the audio money earmarked for it hasn't reached the contractor yet.
