Ikpeme, Abdulrahaman take charge of NFF, NPFL

Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme and Dr Ayo Abdulrahaman have taken charge of the Nigeria Football Federation Secretariat and the Nigeria Premier Football League respectively, as the National Sports Commission moved to ensure continuity in football administration following the resignation of the federation’s top officials.

The National Sports Commission endorsed Ikpeme, until then Deputy General Secretary, to oversee the NFF Secretariat as interim General Secretary, with Dr Ademola Olajire, formerly Director of Media and Communications, stepping in as interim Deputy General Secretary.

The appointments followed Thursday’s resignations of Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau as President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Dr Mohammed Sanusi as General Secretary, and members of the federation’s Executive Committee.

Also on Friday, the NFF appointed Abdulrahaman as Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria Premier Football League, on the same day the new season kicked off with a season-opening clash between CAF Confederation Cup flag-bearers, Shooting Stars, and newly-promoted Inter Lagos FC, at the Adamasingba Stadium, Ibadan.

Abdulrahaman, who holds a doctorate degree in sports administration, brings a wealth of experience across the various leagues into the role.

Ikpeme said Abdulrahaman’s appointment followed Thursday’s directive to all board members, chief executives and non-NFF-staff Chief Operating Officers of the various leagues to vacate their positions, and confirmed that the appointment took immediate effect.

The Chairmen, appointed directors and chief executives of the Nigeria Premier Football League, Nigeria National League, Nigeria Women Football League and Nationwide League One have equally been directed to hand over administration of their respective leagues to their Chief Operating Officers, who are staff of the NFF, or to a newly deployed Chief Operating Officer from the federation where the incumbent is not.

All processes initiated in preparation for the NFF Elective Congress, earlier scheduled for September 27, have been suspended, with a fresh electoral process to commence only after comprehensive reforms have been concluded in consultation with FIFA and CAF.

The reorganisation comes on the back of a directive by President Bola Tinubu ordering a comprehensive overhaul of Nigerian football administration, to address the country’s repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and global tournaments.

“The reform must respond to a longstanding need to strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability across Nigerian football,” Tinubu had said, noting that while other sports had recorded meaningful progress since the reset of the sports sector under the re-established National Sports Commission, football had continued to struggle owing to structural weaknesses.

“Football, Nigeria’s most popular sport and the greatest beneficiary of public support, investment and national attention, has continued to struggle basically due to structural deficits within the system,” he said, directing the Chairman of the National Sports Commission to work with the NFF Secretariat and other stakeholders to ensure continuity in football administration while facilitating a broad, consultative reform process alongside engagement with FIFA and CAF.

Who cares?

Know the root cause of the decline and fix it.

Very corrupt set of people managing football in Nigeria

They said don't swim in alligator infested waters but to lie down and sleep by the shore is also damning.

These interim people are still the old names that have surrounded football for years and cultured it to the present position.

While I somewhat agree about the experience and the rosy credentials. But our football did not suffer because of those. It suffered because of culture, with each successive administration doing almost exactly what it's predecessors did.

If you really want a change you must have the courage to try new things, new people, starting with the interim administration. Either bring people from outside sports and football administration to be specific or advertise internationally.

I bet these ones will direct the football house in exactly the same previous paths and we will end up exactly where we were in no distant time.

I bet you they are and they will be.
They know where all the skeletons are.
Sorry to say so but they are the house rat that knows where the satchel of crayfish is kept.

Clean break is clean break.
The only other way is to get a board of highly, highly upstanding Nigerians to superintend over them. People who value their reputations and fear failure and scandals.

If you want a commercially successful NFF then bring in folks from the business sector. They may not know jack about football administration but that is exactly how to crush cancer.

Because he was always part of the 'system'. Learnt a lot from his Delta FA days.

I just hope reforms will be made to broaden the base of leadership candidacy. Right now it all looks like a cartel.

In Europe you can vie for leadership just like any other political office. You don't have to belong to any group or previous membership of any Association.

You have ideas, you are resourced, you sell them well, you win.

Just broaden the base and open up the space and let quality come in.

Re: Ikpeme, Abdulrahaman Take Charge Of NFF, NPFL by ARISHEM:
Never have we had it this bad in the history of sports. We can't qualify in 4 consecutive editions of FIFA Under 17 and 2 consecutive editions of the FIFA under 20, the FIFA world cup and football Olympics. Even last Afcon it takes CAF to penalize Libya and award us 3 points for us to take qualify in that tournament.
Nigerian football is dying fast.
Re: Ikpeme, Abdulrahaman Take Charge Of NFF, NPFL by Mrexcell(m): 8:06am On Aug 29
The reorganisation should stop corrupt nigerian politicians from taking over the nff their only aim is to loot money from fifa and the federal govt, only experienced sports administrators should be elected the nff president.

If not for the former governor of delta state that sponsored him he wouldn't have ever had any business been the nff president he has absolutely nothing to offer.

I will start taken Nigeria league serious when odd of home team against away team started reading like [3 : 1.4]. (5.2 : 1.3)
{2.8 : 2.3}

If South Africa, Egypt, Morroco, Algeria, even Tanzania can be bookmakers can given such odds out,why not Nigeria, that claimed to be powerhouse.
Re: Ikpeme, Abdulrahaman Take Charge Of NFF, NPFL by Nobody: 9:16am On Aug 29
They shouldn't take over NPFL. I strongly disagree with this. They are mere appointees
Re: Ikpeme, Abdulrahaman Take Charge Of NFF, NPFL by Ewedegubbler: 9:58am On Aug 29
Mr Ikkpeme.

Don’t go there Ànd become a racketeer like taiwo olosho lover ogunjobi or the crooked Amaju pinnick

Remember there once was a gentleman called Emeka Omeruoh who still till this day was a standard bearer for what Àn NFF chairman should be.

Follow in omeruouhs footsteps Ànd you’ll succeed.
