Fifteen National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have reportedly been abducted by gunmen in the Ofu/Itobe–Onicha-Igo axis of Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State

A relative of one of the victims, who spoke with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), said the corps members were abducted on Wednesday while travelling from the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State to Abuja.

The victims were members of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II and had reportedly concluded their orientation camp activities before beginning their journey.

According to the relative, identified as a family member of one of the abducted corps members, the youths were travelling in two buses when they were attacked.

He told FIJ that his brother, Ayodele David, was among the abducted corps members.
A police officer, Adeji Joshua, who contacted some of the families, reportedly said the incident occurred along the Ofu/Itobe–Onicha-Igo axis.

The relative said the victims included passengers travelling in a Peace Mass Transit bus and another bus marked 564.

“According to a police officer who contacted us later that night, the incident occurred around Ofu Local Government Area, Kogi State, along the Ofu/Itobe–Onicha-Igo axis,” he told FIJ.

The source said the driver of the Peace Mass Transit bus was left behind after sustaining injuries during the attack.

He said the abductors reportedly spoke Fulfulde, Hausa and English, although the victims’ relatives could not independently establish their identities.

According to him, 16 people were listed on one of the manifests, but one corps member was transferred to another vehicle after the driver said the bus was full.

“From the explanation of the driver, who was badly injured, 15 passengers were kidnapped even though 16 people were listed on the manifest,” he told FIJ.

The driver was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment, the source said.

A video from the scene reportedly showed the attackers shooting at the vehicles before abducting the passengers.

PREMIUM TIMES could not independently verify the identities of the attackers or whether a ransom had been demanded as of the time of filing this report.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the Kogi State Police Command were unsuccessful. The command’s spokesperson, Saliu Afusat, did not answer calls to her phone.

Calls to Peace Mass Transit’s published customer service and emergency numbers were also unanswered.

The incident adds to a series of kidnapping attacks reported along Kogi’s highways and forest corridors in recent weeks.

On 9 August, security agencies reported the abduction of commuters along the Ojuwo-Ajengo-Memarebo and Ojiwo-Itobe roads in Ofu LGA. The Nigerian Army later said 16 victims were rescued after troops, working with the police, Navy, vigilantes and hunters, engaged the abductors in a gun battle near Adumu in Dekina LGA. One local hunter was killed during the operation, while a police officer was injured.

Earlier, on 8 August, the Kogi Police Command said it had intensified operations around the Okene-Ajaokuta axis following another kidnapping incident along the Okene-Auchi Road. The operation involved police tactical units and the Nigerian Army, with support from the Edo State Police Command along the Kogi-Edo border.

The repeated attacks have raised concerns over the safety of travellers using Kogi’s highways, particularly routes linking the state with neighbouring states and areas where criminals can retreat into forested terrain.

Which way Naija?🇳🇬

15 young Nigerians, fresh from NYSC camp, full of hope and dreams, now in the hands of kidnappers. Their families are distraught. Their future is uncertain. And the rest of us are left asking: When will this madness end?

This is not just about Kogi. This is about every Nigerian who steps on a road, every parent who sends a child to school or work, every young person trying to build a life in a country that seems determined to break them.

Which way Naija? We need more than prayers. We need leadership. We need accountability. We need a government that protects its citizen.

Which way Naija? The answer is simple: We either fix this country, or we lose it entirely.

May these corps members return safely. And may our leaders finally wake up to the reality that insecurity is not a regional problem—it is a Nigerian problem that demands a Nigerian solution. 🇳🇬

We cannot continue to send young graduates to dangerous locations, to be raped and killed by nuisance who can't read ABC.
Many have been traumatized from bad experience forever.

Politicians children sit at home and get their discharge certificate while the children of the poor risk their lives travelling around bandits infested roads...

You've spoken the truth that many are afraid to say.

The rich don't suffer. Their children don't suffer. They get their certificates through connections while the children of the poor risk their lives on bandit-infested roads.

Should NYSC be scrapped?

Maybe not entirely – but it definitely needs radical reform. We cannot continue to send young graduates to dangerous locations without proper security, welfare, or protection.

Until the government can guarantee the safety of corps members, they should suspend postings to high-risk areas. And until the children of politicians serve the same way everyone else does, the program will remain deeply unfair.

We need change. 🇳🇬

It's unfortunate that the person in charge of their country is more concerned about politics and cooking fake statistics to feed the gullible that the country is moving forward.....hopefully,they would be found and returned safe.

I still don't understand the main purpose of this NYSC or whatever...it is more reasonable to send the 1 year service money to the graduates instead of endangering their lives... Some would even use the money to start something... Mtcheww
Re: 15 NYSC Members Kidnapped In Kogi While Returning From Camp (Photos, Video) by Helinuse: 11:26am On Aug 29
But I see no reason why NYSC should not have been scrapped already.
I also see no reason why youths would opt for such a program when the disadvantages far outweigh the advantages.

In the past one week alone, over 150 people have been kidnapped on Kogi roads. Does Kogi state have a rapid response unit? No. Does Kogi state or indeed any state in Nigeria have surveillance aircraft? No.

The over 90 billion naira that the former Kogi state governor stole, the clown that calls himself white lion, could have bought over 10 high end surveillance aircraft like the Augusta AW139 helicopter. That helicopter has infra-red cameras for thermal imaging and night time tracking, night vision capabilities and cameras with zoom and enhanced tracking abilities. These helicopters can go for as low as 7.4 billion naira each. No state in Nigeria has any excuse not to have them.

But you see, the black man is just unfortunate and lacks the ability to engage his brain. We keep wailing when solutions can be found. But of course why will any governor agree to removing money to buy surveillance helicopter when he can just embezzle the money?

Same Kogi they almost captured our luxurious bus that year (Ezenwata transport company) as we were returning from Kebbi state.

I saved everyone in that bus and got two corper bannies who followed me to my abode.

I was sceptical about the way the driver and conductor were stopping almost every hour complaining of gas shortage. Like, how would you be moving corp members from Kebbi to Anambra state and you didn't fill gas.

Something didn't just sit well with me so I had to send a message to the DG of NYSC. He replied asking me of the exact location (we were packed at an eatery in Niger state) by past 8pm and this was a bus that left Kebbi around 11:44am.

The DG asked again where we were and I gave him the feedback.

In the early hours of the morning between 5 and 6am, armed men stormed from the hill (the border between Kogi and Edo state) and unknown to us the DG sent an army vehicle to follow us behind at a distance. That singular act made my respect for that particular DG to increase.

2021 March/April, I'll never forget that incident in a hurry.

What a shame, what a pity. This alone should convince a right thinking person that we are doomed and should vote them out.... But u will see a full grown individual devoid of sense campaign for the same people. Don't worry, ur turn will come, it might not be u but ur relative or loved one and the pains others are feeling shall come upon u a thousand folds... Tueh!

The NYSC programme has outlived its usefulness.
Nigeria is a most dysfunctional country but cheap cash from crude oil would not allow Nigeria's politicians see that continuation of Nigeria as a country is a disservice to the people in Nigeria, especially in the southern regions since Islamists in Arewa 12 sharia states unilaterally adopted unconstitutional Islamic sharia criminal justice system, and Boko haram which gave rise to banditry and mass kidnappers for ransome emerged. The Islamists represented by Boko Haram and bandits are gunning for a Nigeria to be governed with Sharia criminal justice system.

The template used by the Afghan 🇦🇫 Taliban is being employed by Nigeria's Islamists.
Taliban first won important seats in the Afghan government and started its fight for Afghanistan to be governed with Sharia criminal justice system.

it's well may God preserve them and touch the heart of the kidnappers to release them
but Ofu/Itobe/Ochadamu axis of Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State has long been known for those men of the underworld operations during my service year in Kogi 2015/2016 i got to know about those areas when we have to sleep overnight at Itobe bridge because of those evil men they told us that they dont operate to spare they operate to kill all on sight and take all their belongings
so it was a bad decision from the driver part to take that route that time of the day once its 8-8:30 drivers usually packed at Itobe till the next morning
God will keep them all save
