“708.55GB gone just like that” - Lawyer sues MTN after her 800GB data drops to 91.45GB in days A Nigerian lawyer, Zaenab Olawunmi Adams, Esq., has formally sued MTN Nigeria over what she described as the unusually rapid depletion of her 800GB annual data plan. Adams, a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, said she subscribed to the plan on May 15, 2026, for ₦125,000, but was left with just 91.45GB by August 27. ‘708.55GB Has Been Depleted’ In a formal complaint addressed to MTN Nigeria customer care, the lawyer said the network’s records showed that about 708.55GB of her 800GB allocation had been used within approximately 104 days. She described the rate of depletion as unusual, particularly because the plan was purchased as an annual package. According to her complaint, only about 11.4 per cent of the original data allocation remained. Lawyer Questions Data Usage Adams said she has been an MTN subscriber since she was 10 and raised concerns about the accuracy and accounting of the deductions from her data allocation.Shopping For New Mobile Phones She explained that she does not consider herself a high-volume data user and said her internet activities are mainly carried out on a single mobile device. She said: “I do not use multiple devices on the line, I am not a gamer, and my ordinary internet usage is substantially limited to routine activities such as social media, messaging, browsing and other personal online activities on a single mobile device.” The lawyer therefore requested that MTN investigate the depletion and provide a detailed account of how the data was consumed. Adams Demands Detailed Usage Records Adams asked the telecommunications company to provide records covering the period from May 15 to August 27, 2026, so she can reconcile the original 800GB allocation with the approximately 708.55GB reportedly consumed. Among other things, she requested the date and time of each data-consumption session, the volume deducted during each session and a chronological statement showing her data balance and deductions. She also requested information on the applications, services, categories or destinations responsible for each significant deduction, where such information is technically available to MTN. Lawyer Seeks Transparency The legal practitioner said the extent and speed of the depletion raised legitimate concerns that warranted a proper technical and account-level review. She called for an immediate investigation and reconciliation of the data usage, stressing that she wants a transparent explanation of how the deductions were made. As of the time of the complaint, Adams was seeking a response from MTN Nigeria and detailed records that would allow her to independently verify the reported data consumption.

KAA truths has since sued them to court demanding that data should be pay-as- you- go and not having expiring date placed on your data purchase. For example, MTN is pay-as- you- go or use in South Africa and airtel is also pay-as-you-go or use in India but had expiring date here in Nigeria. Why should it be so? They are milking Nigerians dry. Please support KAA truths . They are on Facebook and YouTube. Follow the proceedings and be ready to support them. It's a fight for a common Nigeria. |

We have issues with numbers in this country. Accountability is something we lack. MTN isn't stealing your data, you lack accountability Go and download internet speed meter and pay for the premium version. Every day MTN sends you your data usage, compare it with what the app reads

As much as I enjoy mtn's fast speed network when compared to others, I'll settle for even glo's snail network. MTN and village people are in the same cohort. |

Just because people cant monitor data ...these guys are taking advantage to scam us ... government need to put mouth , but they collect bribes from these companies to keep shut and look the other way ... it should be changed to days or weeks or months and not by gigs ...it should be like dstv ... if u pay for one month, it should last for one month...if it's a week , it should be unlimited for a week... data is the cheapest thing in developed countries...but naija , they will turn it to a way to scam citizens... |

michlins:Forget this thing wey u de talk...u can never be able to monitor ur data like normal calls ... how will I know how many gigs or kilos I used on a website , thats cos it varies ... these network providers are criminals...the only way to stop them taking advantage is by making it be like dstv...if u pay for one month, it lasts for one month regardless on how u wanna use it.. then if u wanna download, thats when they can charge extra cos downloads can be monitored...streams are difficult to monitor |

cr7lomo:if this is the case, why then can you conclusively prove that they're stealing your data It all comes down to the lack of accountability I am talking about. Take your time, study the data depletion and you won't be having this sort of conversation again |

I wrote MTN customer care last year copying the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC after the 11,000 credit I normally use for data disappeared after 2 days even after I got clear evidence (text notifications that the recharge was successful). The funny thing is that I checked my credit balance 6 hours after the recharge and got the text message showing my updated credit balancem. Only for the credit to disappear after 2 days The plan I normally subscribe for 7 months straight was removed at that period, the only plan available was at an increased rate and I was not willing to pay. I kept the credit hoping they would later release the desired plan only for me to see it disappear. After I wrote the mail, they responded that it was my bank, pure lies, because I logged the complaint against my bank and the bank responded with a receipt that the transaction was successful. "Miraculously" (mysteriously is a better word), the credit was returned after 48 hours. MTN knows what they are doing It's unfortunate that they don't have a major competitor in terms of Internet performance and pricing, we would have dumped them long ago. |
