Are we confused with the term "Highest Paying"?

This should be about standard pay rate for a job role across various employers, and this defines baseline expectation for specific fields. We are mixing this up with professionals earning income as "investors/businessmen". Business income is not standard for any profession or field.

For many students, choosing a university course is one of the biggest decisions they will ever make.

While passion remains important, earning potential has become an increasingly important factor as families grapple with rising living costs and a competitive job market.

The truth is that no course guarantees wealth. However, some degrees consistently lead to industries where salaries are significantly higher than the national average. From oil and gas to technology and medicine, these fields continue to produce some of Nigeria’s highest earners.

1. Computer science and software engineering

Technology has created more new millionaires in Nigeria over the last decade than almost any other sector.

Software developers, AI engineers, cybersecurity specialists and data scientists are increasingly working for international companies while living in Nigeria. Many earn salaries in dollars, making tech one of the most attractive career paths today.

2. Medicine and surgery

Medicine remains one of the most respected and financially rewarding professions in Nigeria.

Doctors, surgeons and medical specialists continue to enjoy strong demand both locally and abroad. The global shortage of healthcare professionals has further increased opportunities for Nigerian-trained doctors.

3. Petroleum engineering

Despite the global energy transition, Nigeria’s oil and gas industry remains one of the country’s highest-paying sectors.

Petroleum engineers working with major energy companies often earn salaries far above the national average.

4. Law

A law degree can open doors to corporate law, oil and gas law, technology law and international arbitration.

While earnings vary, top lawyers and legal advisers working with major corporations often command substantial salaries.

5. Accounting

Accounting remains one of the safest and most versatile career choices.

Professionals who combine a degree with certifications such as ICAN or ACCA are highly sought after by banks, multinational firms and consulting companies.

6. Data science and artificial intelligence

Data is becoming one of the world’s most valuable resources.

Banks, fintech companies, telecommunications firms and international employers are aggressively hiring data scientists and AI specialists, making this one of the fastest-growing high-income careers.

7. Pharmacy

Pharmacists continue to enjoy strong employment opportunities in hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, research institutions and regulatory agencies.

The healthcare sector’s continued expansion has strengthened the profession’s earning potential.

8. Electrical and electronic engineering

Nigeria’s power, telecommunications and infrastructure sectors continue to create opportunities for skilled engineers.

Professionals with expertise in renewable energy, telecommunications and industrial systems are particularly in demand.

9. Economics and finance

Economics graduates who acquire additional financial qualifications often move into investment banking, financial analysis, risk management and corporate finance.

These positions are among the highest-paying roles in Nigeria’s financial sector.

10. Nursing science

Nursing has become one of the most internationally mobile professions available to Nigerian graduates.

Countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and the United States continue to recruit Nigerian nurses, creating opportunities for significantly higher earnings abroad.

What students should know before choosing a course

Experts caution that salary should not be the only factor when selecting a degree.

Skills, professional certifications, work experience and adaptability often matter as much as the course itself. A graduate from a lower-paying field with strong skills may outperform someone from a traditionally lucrative profession.

The job market is also evolving rapidly. Fields linked to artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, renewable energy and digital services are expected to create some of the highest-paying opportunities over the next decade.

For students preparing for admission, the smartest approach may be to combine personal interest with market demand. In today’s economy, the most valuable graduates are often those who possess both specialised knowledge and practical skills employers are willing to pay for.

I may not be able to speak for others but you see that number one (tech), that one na tried and trusted. Oga/Madam, instead of your children to dey play and whileaway their time, introduce them to tech early enough and thank me later. For adult, I will suggest the best 2 courses which are DATA SCIENCE and CYBER SECURITY. I didn't say data analysis or data anaytics ooooooo, i said DATA SCIENCE and CYBER SECURITY. For chldren, make them start with game development or web using CMS like wordpress before finally pushing them to real programming.
For those of you who may be asking where to learn, go on youtube and download free videos, udemy or go to tech institutions like NIIT, New Horizon, Flamytech, Aptech, Ridzin Marks tech or HIIT. I don drop update oooooo!!!

What do I even know sef?

For tech, only learning JavaScript come use one other language join am can be fetching you some gigs (also AI has made debugging, UI and UX easy).. It doesn't mean if you don't know your way you no go suffer pass Job oo.

Most mechanics earn comfortably than lawyers. I used to like law until I saw a lawyer on suit and palm sandals carrying a bag of rice he bought and crossing the road. He priced the bike man and it looked like it was too expensive and my man legged it to his house of about 15mins in that hot sun!

Let's pretend like it's not the fattest pockets that win cases in Nigeria and those fat pockets aren't looking for fresh graduates mostly..they cann have SANs on speed dial or those with popular chambers or recognition. Every other to them is "charge and bail."

Go to the court. You will understand better when you see some lawyers dey hustle lonely clients there.

The country made a profession I so much used to admire lack the respect it used to have. Even the Nigerian law doesn't respect her lawyers.

To put into perspective, before an average Nigerian lawyer can buy a land or a car in Nigeria, you suppose know say en do go defend wetin fit bounce back anytime sooner.

For doctors and pharmacists, I respect them. But only doctors who have hospitals are cashing out. Also, pharmacists who have the capital to setup their pharmacy will excel or its another one very bad angle of suffering and smiling...because you need a certain amount of capital to not look like those 'chemist' shops.

Those employed are like the regular civil servants.. and dem also dey go outside work.

For petroleum engineering, you can still read it and be earning ₦25k as a fuel attendant. The job is saturated with big men's children and unborn children names.

For banking, you can work as an accountant without reading accounting or banking and fin. in Nigeria. The biggest paid employees didn't use their CV. They used a phone call.

For Economics, pray make hunger no kill you, you hear?

They don't know the course is public administration, international relations, economics, law, governance, etc. combined.

Most people don't also know Psychology is lucrative too. What about Social Work?

In essence, social sciences is a nice area. You are a natural HR.

Education should be number one! The Academics employ more professionals than any and pays handsomely if you have minimal Masters Degree

Knowing how to ace aptitude tests, especially banks graduate trainee ones, is the ultimate in getting a graduate job. The second is having an acceptable grade to qualify for these trainee positions.

Nevertheless, things have changed as someone who knows how to manage social media ads across the major platforms has literally created a job for him/herself.

I will concede to petroleum engineering, or preferably chemical engineering since this is broader than the former. The country's oil industry is attracting investors compared to Buhari's era where investments nosedived.

Again, know how to pass aptitude tests.

There are good law firms in the country, especially Lagos and Abuja. To get a good job as a lawyer, attending a good school preferably federal university is the first step. Get good grades both in the uni and law school. Apply to grad programs at all law firms/chambers.

There are the good, bad and ugly in all industries. Everything depends on the person involved - location, accessibility to quality information and its corresponding application, mental aptitude, personal belief and guts etc.

Well let me help you as I'm into digital marketing. You can learn it within 4 months. practical teaching not online teaching or videos. Then you can sell anything whether your own product or others own. You don't need anyone to employ you or to work for anyone. just the ability to spot a physical or digital product that will sell them you plug in.

I like your writing skills, you will make more buck writing than whatever program you are developing. Now that entrepreneurship is now a course in the university, I wonder why the OP ignored that vital profession, maybe he didn't see it as a profession but as a hustle.

Agriculture is another field that is printing money if you develop your skill in a particular area within the agricultural field.

Lastly politics as a profession and not a course of study is a high paying job in Nigeria, it is very rare for a politician to lose, you lost an election but your opposition still gives you contract, your party mark you for future position and you still get some dough for participating in an election and if you are smart like Obi, you create a GoFundMe and cash out from your diaspora admire.
