Stop Patronising Unregulated Cart Pushers, Lagos Commissioner Urges Residents by Kingzjayzee(op): 11:51pm On Aug 29
The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has warned residents against patronising unregulated cart pushers.

Wahab gave the warning in a statement posted via his official X page on Saturday, saying their activities often result in indiscriminate dumping on medians, roads and drainage channels, with grave consequences for the environment and flood management.

This followed the monthly environmental sanitation exercise held in the Festac area of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, which was attended by the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; his wife, Oluremi Hamzat; and other stakeholders.

The commissioner said the state was working to build a more efficient, sustainable and accountable waste management system, stressing that the informal, unregulated waste collection system being run by cart pushers undermines these efforts.

The statement read in part, “We must also discourage the patronage of unregulated cart pushers, whose activities often result in indiscriminate dumping on medians, roads and drainage channels, with serious consequences for the environment and flood management.”

Wahab linked residents’ willingness to pay for waste collection services to the quality and reliability of the services rendered by government-approved operators, noting that the ministry’s interventions were aimed at improving the system for all residents.

“We recognise that residents’ willingness to pay for waste collection is directly linked to the quality and reliability of the services provided. Our intervention is therefore focused on ensuring that the system works better for everyone,” he said.

He disclosed that the ministry was working round the clock to address challenges at landfills, dumpsites and critical waste collection points, while sustaining engagements with Private Sector Participation operators to improve service delivery across the state.

The commissioner insisted that keeping Lagos clean required a collective effort between government and residents, stating that government’s role in providing leadership, infrastructure and regulation could not substitute for individual responsibility.

“A cleaner Lagos requires a collective effort. Government will continue to provide the leadership, infrastructure and regulation needed, but residents must also take responsibility by properly disposing of their waste and keeping their surroundings clean, not only on sanitation days, but every day,” Wahab said.

I don't patronize them in anyway. They will come into the street collect your trashes it's either they dump it in the streets or pour them into the gutters drainage at night time.

This needs to stop immediately.

Simple stuffs, let the accredited waste collectors move frequently and promptly to evacuate waste from streets and houses, no one will even patronise the cart pushers.
Accredit more waste collectors and mandate them to evacuate more frequently!

I have been taking note of thier movement now in our estate, the best they've done recently is almost 3 weeks interval,, can you imagine such! I believe its even because its an estate o, the general ones outside can probably be like month interval

Very foolish talk.

The accredited trash collectors can stay for weeks without visiting. Should citizens keep waste in their bedrooms?

This Tokunbo sef. Always talking trash like the one he's supposed to be collecting.

Those cart pushers are life-savers to many business men and women.
Re: Stop Patronising Unregulated Cart Pushers, Lagos Commissioner Urges Residents by RichDad1(m): 8:26am On Aug 30
Tokunbo should do the needful abeg. The amount of filth littering everywhere in Lagos is alarming.
However, recently, I've seen seeing the Lawma trucks clearing them but a lot still need to be done.
Re: Stop Patronising Unregulated Cart Pushers, Lagos Commissioner Urges Residents by condralbedez: 8:26am On Aug 30
So I should dispose the trashes myself or keep them inside my fridgehuh The
accredited waste collectors are barely seen moving frequently on the street or in market zone.
Re: Stop Patronising Unregulated Cart Pushers, Lagos Commissioner Urges Residents by dederocs(m): 8:27am On Aug 30
It's your job to remove them from the streets as an enforcement agency. These people pack dirty, collect money from lagosians and dump these dirt on the road in the night.
Re: Stop Patronising Unregulated Cart Pushers, Lagos Commissioner Urges Residents by Sheuns(m): 8:34am On Aug 30
When Fashola successfully banned these cart pushers, he ensured the alternative (compact trucks) from LAWMA were available and reached everywhere.

You on the other hand haven’t provided any alternative but are quick to issue bans and warnings.

For your information and I know you are aware, those that dump refuse on median do so because it has been a long standing order since Fashola days for citizens to put their refuse by the medians for lawma to pick up.
Re: Stop Patronising Unregulated Cart Pushers, Lagos Commissioner Urges Residents by kingthreat(m): 8:35am On Aug 30
As at present, the waste disposal system in Lagos has to be the worst in the whole of the country.
How can waste disposal be coming once in 3 months and rather than you find a solution, you blame alternative people have no other choice than to use?
Re: Stop Patronising Unregulated Cart Pushers, Lagos Commissioner Urges Residents by chidiokay: 8:41am On Aug 30
Why are the cart pushers back in the 1st instance, is it that people just prefer luxury service of cart pushers or govt failed Lagos ... every house gate is filled Refuse and Lawma is no where to be found

What do you want people to do, wait till Cohlera outbreak, You can't tell people not to look for alternatives if You can't restore effective service

Bring back lawma nd cart pushers will fade out once again

Re: Stop Patronising Unregulated Cart Pushers, Lagos Commissioner Urges Residents by funmilade4real(m): 9:01am On Aug 30
Can you provide reliable alternative solution? For almost a year, we have not seen your regulated waste managers don't come for months.
Re: Stop Patronising Unregulated Cart Pushers, Lagos Commissioner Urges Residents by Samuels90: 9:05am On Aug 30
Some cart pushers are life savers. The LAWMA guys are not available so residents use them to sort themselves out. More so, this waste collection thing is not difficult, the will and readiness to do it is not there from the state Govt!

Maybe you read the first part of what he said or didn't understand what he meant by the issue with the government accredited collectors is the efficiency and frequency with which they collect the refuse from home which the government is working to address.

We should offer solutions not just criticism because to criticise is easy just like Peter Obi with his very low mental faculty can do but if you ask him for solution he tell you I cannot tell you now grin so even an insane person can point out issues in society but can he give a solution?

Give one solution in addition to the insult you gave.

For me the government needs to have collectors per street and lower the fee of the collection maybe to be per weight to be fair.

Lagos state should wake up to it's responsibilities.
Instead of this Tokunboh Wahab to own up to the failure of the state in waste management, he is here talking rubbish.
In my estate for close to two months, we didn't see the waste disposal vehicle. The entire estate was messy until our estate management went to LAWMA's office and they sent an intervention vehicle.

I was asking the guys why the collapse in waste disposal, The guy told me that vehicles collecting the waste are finding it difficult to dispose when they are fully loaded. The guy said sometimes they may stay up to five days at the govt approved disposal point before offloading.

Mr Tokunboh wake up and provide easy waste disposal points for those vehicles.

If lawma is carry dirt every week at door step no cart pusher will exist

Make it a law all house must pay lawma fee lawma must visit every house weekly bring in more investor make it open for anyone to join open more dump site

Cart pusher can even be working with truck on the day of collection to street that are not motorable to bring outside for truck

If Apc is loosing lagos gov will be happy because of dirt that u can’t many what a big shame

The government does nothing or little when it comes to waste collection and disposal.

First off, create dump sites and buy more dirt collection vehicles. Mandate every home or business to always bag their dirt in refuse bags and tie them properly.

Mandate people to dispose their dirt at the provided dump sites at a certain time of the day.

Penalize people who dispose their waste without bagging them.

For people who would prefer to dump their waste in the gutter instead of disposing them properly, they get 5 years in prison.

If the government wants to go deep into waste management, they could introduce a subscription and employ people to do house to house collections.

The problem we have in this country is that majority of the governors are selfish and dumb. They're only interested in building flyovers where they'd get kickbacks.
