experts:Unfortunately as an opec member our crude is decided by international benchmarks Plus selling crude at kow price to domestic refiners means government is not making revenue from that crude in enough quantity. That means more borrowing |

nairalanda1:You are literally agreeing with Hashim. Opec control international price, not local price. When we sell our crude in international market, opec controls that, not when we sell in our own Domestic market |

experts:We are obliged to sell crude at international prices even to local refineries. Nigerian crude oil is sold to local refineries based on international market benchmarks because oil is priced globally in US dollars and local refineries operate as commercial entities exposed to worldwide commodity costs... |

DARLYNBOI:I already did, upthread, in response to a comment made above Also, I didn't add one other false assumption. This one is : a government cannot set the production cost of any commodity. It always ends in tears. Ask the USSR. |
| Re: ₦605 Petrol Only First Step On Affordable Energy - Gbenga Hashim by nairalanda1(m): 7:30pm On Aug 31 |
dacool1:Yes because your governments from 2006 to 2023 borrowed massively to find subsides and the budget due to oil price related shortfalls and COVID related shortfalls . And because APC failed to diversify the economy This created a debt that eats up a lot of our revenue and ironically forces government today to borrow more than ever. Subsidy removal was meant to try to increase available revenue for spending. It does not address the overall issue of low revenue. It was also forced on us by the massive debt See how your Tinubu and his predecessors have failed, and why Tinubu has to be removed. |

This is the kind of economic conversation Nigeria needs. ₦605 as a starting point, with a clear path towards ₦200–₦300 through local refining, lower production costs and a stronger naira. The question is no longer just what petrol costs internationally, but what it should realistically cost Nigerians. |

If Nigeria can produce its own crude, refine it locally and cut unnecessary costs, why should Nigerians keep paying unbearable prices? Dr. Gbenga’s ₦605 petrol proposal is about making our resources work for the people. This is the kind of leadership Nigeria needs. |

Tareq1105:This is the problem you many Nigerians that are blind. This post is about a professional in the energy sector that has confidently broken down his plans on how to help Nigeria reduce the cost of fuel if he becomes president. But yet you are calling for Obi who said he doest know Nigeria's problem until he enters as a president. Obi that does not know anything about energy and has never been able to break down a single solution to any of the problem Nigeria is facing today. All you know is that Obi is your choice because you lots are as empty as he is already. |

Get ADC in power and make this man the energy minister. The current failure-personified entities holding power won't let this country make progress. You can't do a job, yet you won't step aside. What a curse. |
| Re: ₦605 Petrol Only First Step On Affordable Energy - Gbenga Hashim by benardtotti(m): 8:55pm On Aug 31 |
experts:Unfortunately oil is not beans , you have jv partners and nnpc doesn't own 100% stake in all oil wells , so they can't just set domestic price like that, see after all these calculations the gbenga guy will still realise he needs money to pay the jv partners to be able to discount crude for refining and also will need dollars to be able to defend the naira to dollars rate of 500 naira to a dollar . In economics it's called alternative forgone. |
| Re: ₦605 Petrol Only First Step On Affordable Energy - Gbenga Hashim by nairalanda1(m): 9:06pm On Aug 31 |
Nomsu247:Because we got to sell that crude at international prices to domestic refiners, because crude is expensive to bring out from the ground. Selling it cheap does two things. It makes the oil rigs operate at a loss, and by extension jeopardize JV arrangements, leading to fall in crude production due to losses, and it also reduces government revneue, since every barrel of crude sold in Nigeria, yields some revenue for the government...meaning more borrowing for funding budgets, at a time when we got a crushing debt. |
