This confused artist no go let us hear word...grin grin grin

He is only digging the grave of his already dead career deeper by comparing Fela with Oliver De Coque like this...grin grin grin

He calls himself an artist but don't know the difference between Afrobeat and Highlife music, no be juju be that? How is Afrobeat the same with Highlife music? No wonder his music career didn't last up to 3 years...grin grin grin

Highlife came from Ghana. Fela played highlife before. He also played Jazz. He created Afrobeats from a fusion of jazz and blues, with the horns ensemble typical to highlife.

Highlife like the Igbos played it is zero percent like Afrobeats. Afrobeats is always on the minor scale while highlife is always on the major scale. Den no resemble at all!
When fela got to Ghana, the fusion of Jazz and highlife was already there and he went to learn it.

There just wasn't a name for it so his Ghanaian friend coin the name afrobeat

These guys and inferiority complex...

See the local champion he was comparing to Fela.

Only your blodas listen to Oliver Dé Coque
But I am Yoruba I did and still do listen to Oliver Dé Coque and some other pure Igbo ogene and highlife musicians and why call Oliver local champion?he travelled too though he only sings in his dialect would you have termed ebenezer obey,Ik Dairo,Ayinde bakare local champions because they only sang in yoruba too?

Probably Tekno doesn't know the difference between afrobeat and highlife though,it doesn't mean many yorubas don't listen to Igbo highlife musicians too infact felas sings wears me out compared to other tribal musicians I don't really understand their language.

A genre Fela created in the 60s.

If there was something similar, what are the names of the exponents?
That was an error. Before Fela, there was Afrobeat. Google is your friend

Most of you Gen Z misconstrue Fela's Afrobeat, a genre he invented with Afrobeats which became part of the universal lexicon after the likes of P-square.

Name one exponent of Fela's style before him.

I dare you.

You are wrong and you have not done your research correctly. You are a baby ,Alhaji TEKINO.

Your hero and my favorite igbo musician contributed to Afrobeat but he served, recorded Albums with Ebenezer Obey, and many artists in Lagos.

This was when Lagos was the Capital of Nigeria.
How did I know this, I saw his name and pictures of him behind many albums of these great Artists. We call them Record sleeves. This I saw in Late seventies and in the 1980's.

He later went and created his band. I respect his originality and contributions to Nigeria music industry.

That man spoke yoruba like a yoruba man. If you have the contact of Evang. Ebenezer Obey or Sunny Ade call them to ask if he never served them.

All that time, Orlando Julius and Fela were out there. Oliver came out later and started singing and hailing in Igbo. He learnt praising and hailing from people he served.

See how GenZ Tekno is fraudulently attempting to spin history. He should kuku include Dan Maraya of Jos too.

Oliver De Coque sings highlife like his peers and those ahead of him like Rex Lawson, Bobby Benson etc.

Only a fraud will come up today to claim Oliver De Coque sings afrobeat. He doesn't! Throughout his lifetime, Sir Oliver De Coque sings Ogene highlife and never at anytime deviated from his highlife music.

Afrobeat is not highlife! Fela created Afrobeat and his beats and lyrics were largely drawn from his Yoruba language he spins into pidgin.

"Water no get enemy" that Fela sang about, is a Yoruba proverb. And if you go and listen to his grandfather's Egba anthem, you will appreciate greatly how Fela drew richly from his Yoruba heritage.
The iconic Orlando Julius claimed on "Teju Babyface Show" years back before he passed on that "Afrobeat" (NOT this new music genre called "Afrobeats" the younger ones are now playing) was created by him in the 1960s long before Fela took it up.

Orlando Julius Ekemode's "Ijo Soul" was actually sampled by the great godfather of soul, James Brown in his "I Feel Good." James Brown visited Nigeria back in the 1960s where he met and played music with Orlando Julius and Fela in Ibadan.

Do you know what Afrobeat is? Simply put, Afrobeat= traditional African beats + American soul music. Orlando Julius sang exactly like Fela before Fela even started singing(go and watch him) and there are hints that Fela drew major inspiration from his works. Fela didn't originate Afrobeat, he just gave it a real nice nomenclature.

Just look at years active.

Bear in mind, Fela is also older than Orlando Julie's.

You guys should give it up.

Stop arguing things you don't know. I'm a music analyst. Between 1958 and 1962, Fela was living with his brother in London studying music. During that time, he studied the works of several American Soul musicians and African indigenous Artist such as Orlando Julius, who was already an accomplished, albeit fledging young musician who was at that time experimenting at Obafemi Awolowo's music school with a new style of music which became what we know today as Afrobeat. When Orlando started singing Afrobeat in Nigeria, Fela was still in the university in London. He is often mistaken as the inventor because he gave it the name "Afrobeat" and became far more popular than the originator.

Afficionado my foot.

No, there were no other Afrobeat musicians before Fela Kuti, as he is universally recognized as the sole creator and inventor of the original Afrobeat genre.Unlike most musical styles that evolve out of a collective scene across different regions, Afrobeat was engineered by one man. However, to understand how it came to be, it is helpful to look at the collaborators who co-developed it with him and the older genres that laid the groundwork:
