Tinubu’s FAAC Boom Is A Scam — Atiku by ogododo(op): 10:49pm On Sep 09
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the Federal Government of dressing economic decline in bigger naira figures, declaring that the much-celebrated FAAC “boom” is a monetary illusion that collapses once the figures are tested against currency depreciation, inflation, purchasing power and the mounting liabilities of state governments.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said Nigerians should not be deceived by the spectacle of trillions being announced every month when the naira in which those trillions are denominated has lost enormous value and ordinary citizens are paying substantially more for virtually everything.

“The arithmetic is brutal. In 2019, FAAC distribution was approximately ₦7.85 trillion, worth about $25.6 billion at the prevailing exchange rate. By 2025, FAAC had risen on paper to approximately ₦21.9 trillion, yet its dollar value had fallen to roughly $14.6 billion. So while government parades almost three times as many naira, the underlying dollar value is more than 40 per cent lower.

“That is not an economic miracle. That is money illusion. You cannot batter the currency, allow inflation to ravage purchasing power and then wave bigger naira figures before Nigerians as evidence that the country has become richer. Bigger numbers do not cancel smaller value.”

Atiku said the deception becomes even clearer when translated into the everyday experience of the Nigerian worker, where salaries may have increased nominally while their real value and purchasing power have deteriorated.

"Take the minimum wage as the simplest example. In 2019, ₦30,000 was worth roughly $83. By May 2023, that same ₦30,000 was worth about $65. Today, government boasts that the minimum wage has more than doubled to ₦70,000, yet at an exchange rate of around ₦1,320 to the dollar, that ₦70,000 is worth only about $53. Think about that: the number written on the worker’s payslip has risen from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, but its dollar value has fallen from about $83 to about $53.

“That is Tinubu’s money illusion in its simplest form. The figure in your hand is bigger, but the value in your pocket is smaller. A worker can earn more naira today and still afford less food, less transport, less electricity, less medicine and less housing than before. Government counts the naira but conveniently refuses to count what the naira can buy.”

Atiku said the proper test of an economy is therefore not the size of the figures announced after FAAC meetings, but what those allocations can actually purchase and what obligations they are capable of meeting.

“If FAAC is truly booming, then where is the boom? Where is it in the price of food? Where is it in transport? Where is it in electricity, healthcare, housing and jobs? Where is it in the purchasing power of salaries? Government cannot become richer on paper while the people become poorer in reality and then expect Nigerians to applaud the contradiction.”

He said the contradiction becomes even more glaring when the debts still carried by states are placed beside claims of unprecedented revenue.

“And here is another question the FAAC cheerleaders must answer: if the states are swimming in unprecedented revenues, why are they still drowning in debt? A September 2026 report based on Debt Management Office data shows that just 12 states whose governors are approaching the end of their tenures carry a combined debt burden of approximately ₦5.3 trillion, comprising ₦2.16 trillion in domestic debt and about $2.33 billion in foreign obligations.

“So spare Nigerians the victory parade. You cannot boast endlessly about unprecedented FAAC allocations while states remain heavily indebted, pension and gratuity obligations persist, contractors chase payments and governments continue to carry enormous liabilities. If the money is as unprecedented as we are constantly told, Nigerians have every right to ask the most elementary question: where has the money gone?

“What is the purpose of a revenue boom if liabilities remain enormous? What is the meaning of record allocations if governments continue borrowing and citizens cannot see a corresponding improvement in their standard of living? Revenue is not an achievement merely because it enters a government account. The achievement is what that revenue buys, what debts it settles, what infrastructure it delivers and how much better it makes the lives of the people.”

Atiku said the administration must also stop pretending that fiscal discipline begins only when ordinary Nigerians require relief, insisting that government expenditure, tax concessions, import waivers, revenue exemptions, duplicated projects, abandoned projects and other areas of potential waste must be subjected to the same scrutiny.

Real value depreciated by over 40% in Tinubu's Nigeria. Yet, they keep shouting FAAC. Who FAAC help?

It's the same as those praising NELFUND for Nigerian students. He increased school fees abnormally to make it unaffordable for the people and introduced a loan to them as a succour.
Re: Tinubu’s FAAC Boom Is A Scam — Atiku by Kukutente23: 3:33am On Sep 10
It's the workers who shoulder the burden of the increased FAAC in naira.
Their salaries increased by just 40k while the value of those salaries depreciated by over 300%
They are actually receiving less salary per capita than they used to which is why paying salaries is much more easier
It's like a man who adds more water to the garri he used to give his children when they were just two in the hope that the same amount of garri will swell to fill them now that they are five. The garri will surely lose taste and solidity as it swells in the excess water

Why the silence all this while? Let assumed he was gathering informations but why few months to the 2027 election ahead that he is spitting fire which are either true or false.

He had been a VP. I expected him to have designed a model to take Nigeria high as he presumed.

If government pays salaries based on current realities, the whole government will go broke.

APC is parading governors being able to pay salaries as achievement because people are significantly underpaid and that's why the economy is feeling extremely tight. Purchasing power has been eroded

They just added 40k to salaries across board and called it increase in minimum wage. Meanwhile most workers in private sector are not earning the 70k wage. If you check the number of workers at fed, state and LG. Dem no reach 3million. What happens to the remaining 100 plus million in labour force. That is why value of currency matters not volume

Atiku’s "Dollar Illusion" is the Desperate Rhetoric of a Failed Alternative

It is profoundly ironic that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who has spent decades auditioning to lead Nigeria on a platform of privatization and deregulation, has suddenly developed selective amnesia. His latest tirade against the Federal Government’s fiscal triumphs is nothing more than a masterclass in political hypocrisy and desperate economic distortion.

Atiku’s critique relies on a lazy, dishonest gimmick: evaluating Nigeria’s sovereign domestic economy entirely through the lens of the US Dollar. By doing so, he insults the intelligence of Nigerians and deliberately obfuscates the massive structural rot his own political era helped create.

1. The Hypocrisy of a Ghost Reformer

* The Rebuttal: For years, Atiku campaigned on the promise that he would eliminate the corrupt fuel subsidy regime and unify the exchange rate market "even if they killed him."

Yet, now that President Tinubu has shown the political courage to actually make these hard choices, Atiku has weaponized the inevitable transitional pains for cheap political points.

* The Reality: Atiku does not weep for the Nigerian worker; he weeps for the lost campaign talking points. He cannot praise deregulation in his manifesto and then condemn the fiscal reality of that deregulation when implemented by a bolder leader.

2. The Deceptive "Dollar-Standard" Fallacy

* The Rebuttal: Atiku’s weaponization of dollar conversions is an economic scam. Nigeria’s economy operates on the Naira, not the
Dollar. Civil servants buy food, pay school fees, and rent houses in Naira.

* The Reality: By benchmark-pricing Nigeria’s minimum wage and state allocations entirely in USD, Atiku betrays his elite worldview—
one that views Nigeria only through the lens of foreign capital and overseas spending.

The ₦21 trillion FAAC distribution represents real, tangible local liquidity that is building roads, funding schools, and paying teachers across 36 states—things that cannot be wished away by Atiku’s arbitrary currency conversions.

3. Unmasking the "Subsidy Illusion" of 2019

* The Rebuttal: Atiku nostalgic reference to 2019’s FAAC figures is an admission of guilt. The "cheap dollars" and lower Naira numbers of 2019 were an artificial, unsustainable hallucination funded by trillions of Naira in bleeding subsidies that nearly bankrupted the country.

* The Reality: The previous status quo was a ticking financial bomb. The Tinubu administration chose to diffuse that bomb, redirecting funds from the pockets of billionaire fuel smugglers and arbitrage traders directly to state and local governments.

Calling the recovery of these stolen trillions a "monetary illusion" proves Atiku would prefer to feed the syndicates than fund the states.

4. Intellectual Dishonesty on State Debts

* The Rebuttal: Atiku points to state debts to claim the revenue boom is fake. This is an embarrassing display of fiscal illiteracy from someone who chaired the National Economic Council.

* The Reality: Debt is a function of capital development, not a sign of failure. The historic surge in FAAC allocations has given states the unprecedented capacity to actually service their debts while simultaneously investing in massive infrastructure projects. Atiku wants Nigerians to look at a state's liabilities while ignoring the new highways, agricultural hubs, and security networks those liabilities are building.

5. Empty Rhetoric vs. Structural Actions

* The Rebuttal: Atiku asks, "Where is the money going?" while ignoring the massive fiscal reforms staring him in the face.

* The Reality: The money is going toward the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) transport revolution that is slitting transport costs in half. It is going into the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to ensure poor children go to university. It is going into the direct pockets of workers through a more than 130% increase in the minimum wage. It is going into plugging the systemic leakages that Atiku’s political associates historically exploited.

Atiku Abubakar’s "brutal arithmetic" is nothing but brutal political opportunism. Having been repeatedly rejected at the polls by the Nigerian people, he is reduced to acting as a professional doomsayer.

He attempts to wave away record-breaking revenue generation and institutional tax reforms because he cannot stomach the fact that this administration is successfully rewriting Nigeria’s economic foundations—foundations that his generation of politicians left decayed.

Bigger numbers do mean bigger value when they represent real independence from predatory subsidies, and no amount of dollar-denominated gaslighting from Atiku's Dubai palace can change that reality.
