This is not going to improve any economy, it is going to kill it! My goodness we're poorly educated in this country sha. There's not one single country that wants to grow its economy that would allow a foreign country to establish a retail warehouse within their borders. This is simple basic economic knowledge, exactly how textile died in Nigeria.

You're looking at it from a tribalistic point of view.
why do you think the Nigerian textile business collapsed.

Who are they expecting to drive the chinese retail traders for them is it the lagos state govt that has been looking for ways to get rid of them in lagos? Let the igbo traders just reinvent and restructure their business to keep up with the changing business environment.
Nobody will drive Chinese out of Yoruba land. They have rights to do any legal business that they want .

We don't do Nzogbu Nzogbu here

I don't support this. The competition is good for the consumers. Nigerians, especially Igbos, also trade in China.

After reading majority comments, I just can't help but shake my head.
This tribalism thing has really eating deep into our fabrics especially from Igbo and Yorubas.
Anything that will bring one tribe down is giving joy to the other tribe vice versa.
Honestly as an Igbo man born and brought up in the West. I hardly put mouth into this two tribes matters.
Cus I have good and jolly good friends from both sides of the divides.
.
Now to this Chinese issue, one tribe is happy that the Chinese wants to deprive the other tribe from making money and feel the Chinese are right with what they're doing. But I disagree.
I live in Igbesa Ogun state close to the Chinese free trade zone that has over 200 companies inside the zone producing different types of products you can think of that human beings uses.
Everyday, we watch over 100 trucks and trailers carrying goods to go supply customers outside the state which includes this trade Fair traders.
The Chinese are supplying this traders at wholesale prices, and this traders will still pay transportation to bring the goods to them.
With this, they have certain amount they'll sell the goods to retailers.
Then you as the Chinese companies supplying this traders now decided to bring the goods yourself to their domain and sell at your company's price against the traders retail price.
How does this make sense?
Pls guys let's leave tribal sentiment at times and think about most of the things properly, thanks.
Anything to benefit the end users is a welcome development.
You’re only sobered because your tribes men will be affected.
You’re not happy that the end users are getting quality product at cheaper prices.
Explain greed and selfishness again let me understand better.
Besides that as someone who live close to alaba international market how is it tribal sentiment that we have been buying fake brand new tvs from Alaba over the years and Chinese retailers are giving us original products at more discount?
You’re not concerned about the people, you’re are being sentimental about your tribesmen.

Mr Kalu,

Ghanians protested against your brothers doing business in their country few months ago, for the same thing. You guys were calling them names but now you're changing your tongue. Allow the Chinese to breath and let consumers buy from anyone they want.
Are my brothers producing the said items in Ghana. Or you didn't read where I said it's this Chinese that are supplying my brothers the goods and still come to their domain to sell same goods at their company price. How do they want my brothers who also bought from them at their company's price to sell their own.

The likes of otedola and alakija are lagosians(Omonile) who also do big business in Nigeria.
Businesses are not just by selling spare parts or electronics. Incase you don’t know that.

Government and security agents should watch out for attack, sabotage, looting that may happen in the Chinese shops after this protest, these people hate competition and co-existence of other tribes where they are popular and influential. Chinese people are here to stay in Lagos

If the Chinese are selling it cheaper, then it means the goods can be sold at lower prices, but the traders choose to sell higher. It's a free market, not a monopoly. If they want to compete with the Chinese then they should lower their prices.
Apple is one of the biggest pushers of the US economy, it is currently the most profitable company in the world, the cost of an iPhone is at least 10x higher than the cost of production of that phone, even though the Chinese brands are more cheaper than the iPhone, the US does not allow retailers of these other phone companies in their country, the ones that managed to break in are under heavy taxes, this is done to protect the American product (even though iPhones are not produced in the US) . This is a country that understands macro economy. Same thing happens in EVs and auto mobile.

But when you come to this country, Nigerians would rather see the SMEs killed off and the people made poorer just so they can buy cheaper products, tomorrow they will say "Nigerians are getting poorer, no job, the economy is dying... "Etc without knowing that these are the things that brings about such hard economic situations.

My advice, find you an economics textbook and read, at least SS2 economics textbook or a university level economics textbook. It will help you understand why this Chinese move is an economic killer that no serious country would entertain.

I am not being tribalistic bro, I am part of people that jubilated when Tinubu open border against Rice farmers because they are already turning Nigerians to something else due to their greediness.

Mrexcell:
This is not supposed to be tribalised those chinese retail traders can also go into businesses that yorubas dominate in future. A reasonable govt is supposed to intervene to regulate the business environment so that the chinese won't take away businesses and jobs of law abiding hard working nigerians, nigeria is not a banana republic where anything goes.

If they take the whole business line, where will Nigerians be involved? How do Nigerians in the informal sector survive? Why should the government allow such imperialist move that will result in maximum capital flight? Even in china, they once banned foreigners, especially Nigerians from opening shops. They only lifted that recently with a caveat that there must be Chinese employed and taxes paid!

The people quoting me to support the protest are probably relatives of these traders who have been ripping the end users off for so many years. In a free market where there is a price war, the ones who profit the most are the consumers. If the traders insist on selling at exploitative rates then the Chinese entering the market to beat the prices down is long overdue.

There you lied, Who's not concern about the people. In your logic, the Chinese should eat their cake and still have it.
If they know they can go out and sell the goods themselves, why the need for them to advertise for wholesalers to come their companies and buy from them.
If they love the masses and wants to sell things cheaper, they should stop supplying and distributing to wholesalers and go market the goods themselves. In that way everyone including me will be happy. But you want to be gaining from the wholesalers and retailers at the expense of your distributor, how those that makes sense.
.
Talking of Alaba Int'l market. You're not a kid, I am not a kid. If you and I want to buy quality products, we know where to get it. There's Samsung, LG and co Shops all over the states. But you and I choose to go to Alaba bcus we are looking for something cheaper. And when you're looking for something cheaper, you're at the risk of being scammed.
Or are my brothers behind oluwole fake visas, certificates, company's identity, birth and death certificates and all.

The Chinese setting up warehouse in Nigeria should be condemned by everybody that understands economics.

Instead of them to set up factories to produce the goods here, they are setting up warehouse, which will invariably kill the local economy.

As a buyer, it looks good but if you look at it in the long term, it is very bad. It is not just about igbos. Every tribe has retailers that buys goods overseas and sell in Nigeria. What happens when those people can't compete?
What happens to your brother/sister working in those retail shops? It will affect everyone.

In fact, if you observe our economy, you will notice that since we tilted towards China and abandoned the USA, that is when things began to get worse because Chinese don't build factories unlike USA. They prefer to produce in China and sell in Nigeria.

USA companies will prefer to set up factories in Nigeria due to cheap labour but Chinese will prefer to manufacture in China and sell in Nigeria. We complain of unemployment but fail to understand these things.

Instead of warehouse, let them build factories here, produce it here and sell it cheaper. Everybody wins.
So only Ibos should be allowed to do importation and retail business in Nigeria
