If they are selling cheaper and quality than the indigenous people, who benefits....huhhuhhuh?
Afterall the indigenous people too are not producing, they are also importing.
Look at it from whatever angle you chose to.
if they're selling cheaper than the indigenous people, the people will benefit on the short term but will suffer job losses, inability to enter the market, wealth building on the long term, the economy as a whole will not benefit anything whatsoever both on the short and long term.

Why do you think that America doesn't allow other EVs companies to set up retail shops in America despite that they sell at a lower rate than Tesla and other auto mobile companies? Why is it that apple are having a monopoly on US markets despite the fact that Huawei, Xiaomi, oppo etc have comparable products and at a cheaper price than the iPhone? Why do you think EU have a market protection laws within the countries in EU?

The Chinese should be restricted to factory establishments only in Nigeria.

You can’t just allow them come to start doing retails and clearing out competitors that don’t have as deep pockets as them.

Na so una do take kill SMEs all in the name of looking for Foreign investments.

To those of you saying it’s good because it affects a tribe. All I’ll tell you is don’t worry. No Nigerian retailer or wholesaler can compete with the Chinese if this isn’t stopped. Even those of you that sell voile lace, Ankara, and other native fabrics won’t survive this. There’s nothing sold here in Nigeria that’s not coming in from China. They will out sell every one of you and put you out of business.

Shey they’re already marketing and selling Chinese made cars directly here? E go touch everybody round.
The Chinese must be allowed to do business

This is exactly what dangote wants to do: getting his own trucks and distributing his own petroleum products from his refinery direct to filling stations for free (with costs included in purchase,of course) and thereby putting other tanker drivers and their unions out of business!

Again imagine Chinese people selling all local items in retails in Nigeria,is it going to be a good thing for the country?

Petty people think that as long as it affects only a particular people,it's ok!!!!

You just have to shake your head for this Nigeria and her people
Lol

See this one.

Chinese are here and they are not going anywhere .

They will soon displace you from all markets and that's a very good thing .

The import based retail sector has done more damage to local industries already .

Let us get goods directly from the manufactures at a fair and better pricing.

And who cares if you close shop ?

The traders should have signed exclusive distribution rights. This is a free market
You can't be the manufacturer and again go to another mans country and take advantage and be retailing in petty trades of same foods and items with local citizens of that country!

And it's horrible that you people are not seeing the protesters here as Nigerians but as "Igbo people!"

Everyone knows your standpoint, where you're coming from as regards the tribe and people protesting and I am saying it to you that you are a mod here and a big disappointment!

Unless the protesting traders are the manufacturers and producers of these goods will their protest make sense. If they are simply large scale importers same as the Chinese, then my submission still stands.
It doesn't stand, they're not the manufacturers but they are local traders, the middle class of the economy, their wealth will be spent 100% in the Nigerian economy, this helps banks this helps the government. You people make noise about IGR, how do you think this IGR is generated and who is it gotten from?

The Chinese will spend a few of the money in Nigeria and send the rest to china, creating a wealth flight. Now you've impoverished your SMEs, knockout your local traders from the Market like we did with textile, the people are poorer meanwhile helping the Chinese economy to grow even larger and broader.

This is level one economics.

Wait-o. Is it true that fg allowed foreigners to establish retail outlets in Nigeria.

Is it the same FG that revoked Ibeto's Cement Licence, to allow Dangote Cement to monopolise Cement Industry during Obasanjo's regime?

Oya, flood the market with foreign rice, open the borders, & remove all tariffs so Other countries can flood Nigerian market & industries with their cheapest goods & services & repatriate the funds & crash the economy & obliterate the GDP.

This should be investigated & stopped immediately b4 I call fg & the trade regulators "crassly stupid"!
What is wrong with foreigners having retail business in Nigeria ?

Is this not one of the cries from your people that South Africans were looting their shops ?

The south africa is a different scenario altogether.

The Chinese are manufacturers of these goods , they are in control of the shipping industry, and other logistics. They can afford to sell cheaper or even at a lost to clear out old stocks.

If they are allowed to narrow down into retailing it will plunge more Nigerians into poverty.

Our poverty rate is already alarming.

Government should seize this opportunity and control products prices of these Igbo traders.
So manufacturers should not sell their goods directly ?

There you lied, Who's not concern about the people. In your logic, the Chinese should eat their cake and still have it.
If they know they can go out and sell the goods themselves, why the need for them to advertise for wholesalers to come their companies and buy from them.
If they love the masses and wants to sell things cheaper, they should stop supplying and distributing to wholesalers and go market the goods themselves. In that way everyone including me will be happy. But you want to be gaining from the wholesalers and retailers at the expense of your distributor, how those that makes sense.
.
Talking of Alaba Int'l market. You're not a kid, I am not a kid. If you and I want to buy quality products, we know where to get it. There's Samsung, LG and co Shops all over the states. But you and I choose to go to Alaba bcus we are looking for something cheaper. And when you're looking for something cheaper, you're at the risk of being scammed.
Or are my brothers behind oluwole fake visas, certificates, company's identity, birth and death certificates and all.
While they're genuine other places to get this stuffs, still people patronize the oluwole guys.
So my friend don't blame the people scamming people, rather the blame should be on the victims of the scam.
We all have our eyes and mind open before this scamming takes place.
No tribes is excused from bad eggs, so trying to make it solely my brothers is a no no.
As for the Chinese own, you're only jubilating and rejoicing bcus it affects the people you love to hate, but in truth what they the Chinese are doing is not good.
Like I said, you’ll rather be more sentimental than being logical. Where do oluwole certificate comes in?
We’re talking about Chinese products but you’ve shifted the goal to your tribe vs my tribe argument.
What do you mean by we choose to go to Alaba?
Are you agreeing that alaba international market is a home of fake products?
If you’re agreeing with that then it’s more reason for the Chinese manufacturer to come in. Because two decades ago when my dad went to buy Lg tv from whole sale store in Alaba he never knew you guys made alaba international market to be for fake product base on the response you just gave me.
You mean over a thousand importers in Alaba are doing fake importation? So who should not go to Alaba anymore?
So we should petition the state government to close down alaba international market since the bad eggs are more than the good eggs or just allow Chinese manufacturer take over?

Please stop diverting this discussion to your tribe scam vs my tribe scam we’re not doing scam competition here.

Then you the manufacturer come still carry the product come my domain come dey sell at your wholesale price to my retailers. How do you want me to feel?
.
I stay in Igbesa Ogun state just close to the Chinese free trade zone that have over 200 Chinese companies producing different types of comodities, and hundreds of trucks and trailers go out from the zone everyday to go supply their various clients and customers which includes the trade Fair market dealers.
Isn't that ought to be enough for them Chinese, why bring the goods down yourself to this traders domain and start selling at wholesale price.
How do you want the other traders buying from your factory to make their money and come buy from you.
Trash.

I am not going to be paying more just to keep you in business

If I can get it cheaper at the same or better quality and quantity , I will go for that option.

Remember, Lagos is no man's land according to you guys and so the Chinese are more than welcomed .

The Chinese setting up warehouse in Nigeria should be condemned by everybody that understands economics.

Instead of them to set up factories to produce the goods here, they are setting up warehouse, which will invariably kill the local economy.

As a buyer, it looks good but if you look at it in the long term, it is very bad. It is not just about igbos. Every tribe has retailers that buys goods overseas and sell in Nigeria. What happens when those people can't compete?
What happens to your brother/sister working in those retail shops? It will affect everyone.

In fact, if you observe our economy, you will notice that since we tilted towards China and abandoned the USA, that is when things began to get worse because Chinese don't build factories unlike USA. They prefer to produce in China and sell in Nigeria.

USA companies will prefer to set up factories in Nigeria due to cheap labour but Chinese will prefer to manufacture in China and sell in Nigeria. We complain of unemployment but fail to understand these things.

Instead of warehouse, let them build factories here, produce it here and sell it cheaper. Everybody wins.
I never ready to engage this thread yet. But make I just tell something:

Who told you Chinese people no get production factory’s? Chinese people have a lot of production companies in Ogun state, Oyo state, more than even Lagos state. If you’re on TikTok, you go don see a lot..

But those are not even my own point for now. We go engage this thread later we’ll..

Go where? The Ibos are the ones that needs to go.

Ibo traders sell at inflated prices while the original Chinese producers sell at pocket friendly factory prices.

Talking about factories, the Chinese set up their Manufacuring Facilities here in Yorubaland, employ Yoruba skilled and unskilled workers, pay taxes and royalties to Yoruba Governors. Engage in CSR projects etc.

Despite the excesses of the Chinese which can be managed through effective legislation, they still add value to the socio-economic sector of Yorubaland

If you were producing these goods here under your brand name , we will support you and also offer protectionist policies to ensure you are still in business.

But you don't produce shishi .

And if you go back in history you will see that it was Alex Ekwenme as head of Shagari's economic team that liberalised imports that benefited his people at the detriment of local industries.

Now that we are import dependent because of Ekwenme's economic policies that targeted SW industrial base why should I pay more for same imported goods made in china when I can patronise a Chinese retailer selling far cheaper ?

They are not producing yes, but your perspective is the wrong one here. When the locals are dominating the market, selling at a higher price and making more money, where does that wealth go? Does it not still circulate back into the economy thereby growing it? When you knock out that avenue of IGR the economy will be the one to suffer it. Tomorrow now you will be saying Lagos is topping in IGR and here you are encouraging moves that will dwindle that IGR due to sentiments, cutting your nose to spite your face.

The Chinese send their wealth back to their country, they don't spend it here which is why no serious country allows this sort of practice within their borders, not even the Chinese government would allow it without imposing heavy taxes on the foreign retailer

In this case the marketers are not adding any benefit to the Nigerian economy because they import those goods from china and don’t manufacture them.

Lagos has always been a place where everyone from everywhere comes to trade. This has been the case since the 1800s

The Lebanese and Europeans have been trading in Lagos since the 1800s, the Igbo have been trading in Lagos since the 1900s and the Chinese have also been trading in Lagos since the 1900s.

Anyone that can't compete should close his shop.

The Chinese must go home.
Those trying to frame this as the practice of free trade should just zip it. Likewise, those who see this as the ultimate weapon to push certain people off their pedestal in Nigerias retail business, should see the bigger picture. This is above petty politics so let's be guided...

The Chinese mass produce these goods, they then come down here to mass wholesale it, then they retail it. Some are now involved in hawking stuffs like mobile phones and battery across Nigerian cities.
That is outrageously evil..
It has to stop!

If they take the whole business line, where will Nigerians be involved? How do Nigerians in the informal sector survive? Why should the government allow such imperialist move that will result in maximum capital flight? Even in china, they once banned foreigners, especially Nigerians from opening shops. They only lifted that recently with a caveat that there must be Chinese employed and taxes paid!
Mind you, we are talking of shops that wholly sell Chinese products here..

The Nigerian government should move above ethnic sentiments and defend the country. The informal sector/agriculture provide most of the job opportunities for the endless quantity of untrained humans in this country. The Chinese who rarely embrace Nigerians in their countr,y should not be allowed to wrestle that space away from the firm grip of ordinary struggling Nigerians..

Thank you all!
I agree with most of your point, but I don't agree with them going

But they can sell at Trade fairs not the normal markets

They can invest in other sectors if they have the capability
