OBIDIENT MOVEMENT DEMANDS TRANSPARENCY OVER THE WHEREABOUTS OF THE INEC CHAIRMAN

16th September, 2026

The Obidient Movement demands immediate clarification from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the whereabouts and official engagements of its Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan.

This call has become necessary, following his very conspicuous absence from his official duties in recent times.

In an X (formerly Twitter) post published by the Commission on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, the INEC introduced a certain Professor Rhoda Gumus as the Acting Chairman of INEC, who represented the Chairman of the Commission, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, at an official meeting with the African Union election monitoring delegation in Abuja on Tuesday.As far as the Obidient Movement and Nigerians are concerned, there was no official communication of Professor Amupitan’s handover to anyone, either in acting or substantive capacity.

This raises legitimate questions about the Chairman’s current location, official schedule and the circumstances surrounding his absence.As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, the INEC Chairman cannot operate in secrecy.

Given his antecedents and strong affection for the APC, Nigerians have a right to know where the head of the nation’s electoral commission is, who he is meeting and what official responsibilities he is carrying out.

We therefore call on INEC to publicly clarify:

Where is the INEC Chairman currently?
When did he leave Abuja, and for what official purpose?
Who authorised his absence from the Commission’s headquarters?
What meetings or engagements has he held since leaving the country, if he has travelled?

Has he met, or is he scheduled to meet, Mr. Bola Tinubu, the APC National Chairman or any representative of the ruling party?

These questions are not unreasonable. INEC is constitutionally responsible for conducting Nigeria’s elections, and the independence, transparency and credibility of its leadership have continued to be a cause of concern and are matters of urgent public interest.The Commission must not create room for suspicion, especially at a time when political activities are intensifying and Nigerians are demanding credible preparations for 2027.

The era of the INEC Chairman having strategy meetings with the APC and the ruling party must be a thing of the past. Nigerians do not trust this INEC Chairman or the Commission he leads, so it behoves on him and the Commission to not only be transparent and non-partisan, but to also be seen as such.

It is important to reemphasise that the electoral commission belongs to the Nigerian people. Its leadership must therefore be accountable to the public and must not leave room for speculation about secret political engagements, especially given their many past antecedents and the crisis of confidence that the Commission continues to face.INEC must tell Nigerians where its chairman is and what he is doing.

Since BVAS, elections have become increasingly difficult to rig. What can happen is re-allocation of votes where votes meant for one candidate are counted for another candidate. Any politician who wants to do so does not need Amupitan. He needs polling unit officers to do such.

So when people keep shouting bribing INEC chairman, what exactly is his job?

Announce final results. The era of political parties writing results is long gone.

What I advise the opposition to do is recruit polling unit agents, like three per polling unit. For 176,846 polling units across 36 states and FCT, that means 530,538 polling unit agents. At 50,000 naira per agent, that would amount to 26.6 billion naira. How does the opposition intend to raise the money and recruit polling agents?

Professor Joash Amupitan is not the problem of the opposition. The opposition has failed to get their acts together. They have failed to build their parties in states. They do not even have national secretariats and meet in party chieftains' houses.

They are pre-empting a case that INEC chairman was bribed when they lose as they would.
