Exactly what I was on ystday. You make Nigerians come to you to buy goods whether in China or Ogun free trade zone.
Import them from China, transport them from the free trade zone and about to sell at a price they'll make profit.
Then you the manufacturer that sells at wholesale price to them still brought same goods to their domain to sell at company's price. How do you expect them to feel and to survive
Let me give you an example.

There’s what called OEM. The manufacturer in Asia by the trade laws is able to produce what you want in your branded name. His factory is probably a new factory that wants a market in Africa, particularly Nigeria. You purchase a twenty foot container to start with. You pay all the charges and deliver to your warehouse. You take your time to sell. Next time you purchase a forty foot. And then you move up to ten containers. The manufacturer begins to ask questions as he wants to expand his business, seeing that the goods are now well known in the market. He has a large factory and is able to produce one hundred containers monthly. He begins to target your country. In no time, you see those same goods, with different names in the market. He floods the market with the goods. He delays your production. He is able to produce one hundred containers to flood the market monthly at cheaper rates. He gives you higher rates for the few containers that you buy. He employs more workers in his factory. He visits Nigeria, bringing along with him one or two sales persons and they remain here. The Nigerians lose grounds, shops close and they are out of business because of the unfair practices of Asians. That’s the issue.

Show us the better prices. Show us how the prices of phones imported from China, sold by the Chinese and your so called middlemen have reduced. Show us how the prices of those your okrika clothes have reduced, even with your Chinese as the retailers.

Since we are businessmen, let us face our businesses, while you face APC and whatever reward that you all receive from the poverty inducing party. The Chinese are here to teach your own people business too!

By the way, that phone in your hand, who sold it to you? Even if you cannot identify the middleman, can you pretend that it was not imported by a middleman?
If you can compete why are they protesting

Na so una go dey talk. Small children.

Go and ask General Babangida what happened to the textile industries. Ask General Babangida why he introduced SFEM in August 1986, effectively devaluing the naira, which had not recovered up till this day. Ask General Babangida why cotton production seized. Ask Babangida why he closed down the Nigerian national supply company, the major federal organization that used to import fertilizers used then. When growing cotton became an issue, should Nigerians walk about naked? Who ere those traveling to Europe and USA to import clothes? Na Yoruba people.

When you purchase bad products from Chinese people, remember to tell your people the exact source.
At least I am more sensible than your father.

Some of the factors I mentioned also contributed to the killing of the textile industries.

Now similar thing is happening, but lots of people are not talking about. The Adire production , most of these people are now are importing Adire from China in large quality. Killing the Adire business.....they will go to China with various samples and mass-produced it.

Go to Adire market or production centre of Adire in Ogun state . And hear what the people are saying.

The traders must learn not to be greedy. Price should be fair and competitive. One shop cannot be selling an item for 10 kobo while yhe other selling for 25 kobo for the same or similar product, and the one selling for 25 kobo will then turn around to protest that the 10 kobo guy should be stopped. It doesn't work that way.
You are only looking at the 25 kobo high price without also not factoring in the cost incurred while bringing the product to the shop including even the high shop rent. Those chinese business owners can cheaply easily produce those same products in China because their govt has significantly reduced cost of production. The nigerian traders don't deserves to be vilified for only trying to survive in a very harsh business environment.

You have to rope APC to your loss. Don't you people do business in other countries.
Businesses are always prone to competition.

Before jumping into conclusions. Have you thought of the following;:

1. Cost of rent for a shop in Lagos markets?
2. Cost of tickets, levies and all sorts of taxes imposed on many markets by both the local and state governments?
3. Cost of clearing at the ports?
4. Exchange rates?
5. Cost of moving your products from the ports to your stores? I don’t think there’s a single market in Lagos state that you don’t have area boys demanding money from trucks, containers and individuals moving goods on the roads.
6. Interest rates on loans.

The Chinese on the other hand doesn’t have to battle all these and even if they do, they didn’t come with Naira to your country, they came with dollars a more stable and currency with higher purchasing value when compared to the Naira. Coupled with the fact that they have single digit loans and strong institutional supports from their governments.

No Nigerian business (SMEs, wholesaler) can compete with the Chinese in this venture, they have deeper pockets and can make profits with just a little margin.

A local reseller that sells an item he bought from China for 1000 Naira at 2500 Naira must have factored in all the costs I listed above and his profit may be just 300 or 500 Naira. The Chinese can decide to sell at 1800 Naira and maintain a margin of 300 Naira but he may have larger volume and his turnover would be better than the Nigerian SME that has just an inventory of 100 items.

The government should ensure that factories that produce do not also get into retailing. It’s counter productive.

I also blame some of our people.
The government should ensure that factories that produce do not also get into retailing. It’s counter productive.

Distributors and retailers are very greedy. My friend bought an industrial VFD from China for 150K, the biggest industrial shop seller in Jos was charitable 400k as last price. I personally went to buy industrial solar lights ,I contacted a Chinese company rep in Benin Republic, he told me about the new model which is more efficient. Gave me his supply details in lagos. Meanwhile, suppliers in Jos were screaming nothing like new model shocked. Lagos company plug connected me where I got new model cheaper than old model grin.

What stops you from manufacturing your own here and compete with them?
What are you lacking? Human resources or mineral resources?
Great question.

Do you remember that a time, Dangote talked about building his factory out of Nigeria?
Do you remember that Erisco moved the business out of Nigeria?

With goods from Asia, it is first not a manufacturing problem. There certain household items are manufactured by them and we end up importing them. If traders choose to manufacture locally, too many challenges or bottlenecks make such moves hard,

It is not cheap getting involved with manufacturing. Let me use nails as an example. It used to be cheap purchasing nail making machines and setting up the industry. Now it is almost impossible. The same goes for even our palmoil. Machines used to be cheap, but now almost out of reach for intended manufacturers.

We have the resources, but the cost of manufacturing in the country is huge.

If they Igbos feel at loss, then they can go into manufacturing as well to beat the Chinese

That is when they will face the full wrath of the FG .

That complex is owned by the Federal govt and is only under lease to the private concessionaires and even at that every market is directly under the control of the state and local govt authority.

Any attempt to chase away , intimidate, terrorise any other occupant of that market by the market union will see to full hammer of the law on their heads.

Excuse full ground

There is still manufacturing going on in the SW (Ogun and Oyo) and in Kano and Kaduna.

Stop giving useless whinny excuses why you are failing at everything.

Dangote is into manufacturing locally and that is how he made his money .

Note that Dangote was into importing early in his business career alongside Peter Obi.

Today Dangote is a billionaire industrialist that is a major exporter while your Giringori is still importing and trading.

Many people don't understand that the Chinese government supports its citizens businesses. Chinese businesses have the backing and support of their government.

Manufacturers don't want to be in retail, a manufacturer wants a partner to act as a distributor in a market who can promote that product and if confident relationship is established a manufacturer would even forward sale large volumes to his distributor.

The only business a manufacturer has it that his/her product is competitive in the market for quality and price.

The manufacturer has been forced to come into the retail market or influence a retail agent in this case a Chinese national because the previous distributor is price gouging and making the product uncompetitive.
