the profit our greedy brothers make, how has it benefit us as Nigerians?

The only thing u do is build empty houses in the village n rob it in the faces of we your customers that we are lazy

Imagine a seller telling his customers that they re lazy, Chinese traders won't do that.

Let the Chinese come n sell their wares, we ain't xenophobic here

Everyone is free to sell
Igbo traders in lagos also reinvest their profits in real estate and other sectors in lagos while those chinese business owners will take most of their profits back to China.

I laugh at a lot of people who think this is a thread to attack ndigbo that Western Nigeria welcomes Chinese “investors”. It’s only a matter of time before the Chinese overrun Western Nigeria and “own” it. Then Yorubas will start “fighting” Chinese and Chinese will tell them Lagos is “their” own. Go and look at how they have owned Cameroon and several other African countries

If other nationals, including Asians can demand that Nigerians should be deported from their countries, Nigerians have the right to protest such unfair competition by the Chinese and Indians.

Before now, it was the Indians in the garment and plastic industries. Now it is the Chinese, Cambodians, Taiwanese and Vietnamese , who manufacture the products in their countries, make the prices high for Nigerian importers there and then ship their own containers to Nigeria, to sell directly in the Nigerian retail market. Most Nigerians are not aware that a lot of the used clothes and shoes that they purchase are not only from China, but from Cambodia and Vietnam.

Sadly, while the Chinese are increasing their presence here, establishing Chinese towns and factories, our citizens are busy playing local xenophobia politics and destroying themselves. Infact, the same Chinese now parade the streets of Lagos with their wares, selling directly on the streets.
Sebi you Ibo guys have been exploiting Nigeria and Nigerians for long. No one can stop me from buying at chinko stores if it's the size of my pocket.

Story

Chinese lean towards manufacturing .

They always diversify just as the Lebanese moved from trading to hospitality , construction and whatnot.

It's majorly Chinese that are investing in the manufacturing sector across same SW and boosting jobs and tax revenues.

They are at all levels a better replacement than you guys .

You think you're fighting the Igbos but Igbos will somehow find away out of the problems for themselves while the ultimate loser will be you. Those businesses you see that you call trade have other businesses that rely on them. When you allow a Chinese who borrowed from China with 3 percent interest rate to compete with a Nigerian who borrowed in an incredibly weak currently with 30 percent interest rate, it not competition, you're killing your economy. Commodity prices will be determined in China, profits will be taken back to China and it'll spread to other sectors, not just retail.
If this is the usual post to get at Igbos, Igbo will find a way out. The ultimate losers are the ordinary Nigerians.
You guys are greedy abeg. No dey play victim. We need the Chinese in computer village too. Let us see who would laugh last. That was how I saw an item advertised for 150k and I had to call the number to confirm before going to computer village. The guy confirmed the price but when I got there to buy the next day, he started acting funny and said it was 160k. He was now saying dollar had risen. Very evil stuff. Had to leave there and get it elsewhere. Sadly enough, it is very common in computer village and it's your people. Let the Chinese come and let there be competition that would reset their heads.

The govt created all the issue by not enforcing laws against those fixing price, there should be price control

on the Chinese, there is Chinese town in Lagos where they do wholesale and retail, Nigerians go there to patronize them for cheap stuff but also it does not mean the quality are good...govt should make Chinese sellers stay in China town to protect our retailers in our major markets.

in China, foreigners are banned from doing many businesses, the reason is to make sure that citizens are not thrown away from their source of income

if we have to think deep, it is actually difficult to chase them out right now, they could open shops in a market and then use Nigerians as fronts ( Nigerian, partners, wives, gf or bf) as front, so that is a loophole

Now, the reality is that whatever anyone says online about the Chinese, whether they should be allowed to trade retail is just for online and tribal banter

at the end of the day, the owners of retail businesses we be the ones to decide if they want the Chinese in their markets or not through their unions, those unions are very powerful but also their power stops offline

the chinese could just start selling online on instagram, whatapps and other social media, which will undercut the unions and those that also sell online

it is a dicey situation,...i dont agree that chinese should take over retail because they sell cheaper, they could flood the market with low quality clothes and other products and nigerians will think they are of high quality because the person selling is chinese

if they flood our market, they make it hard for the average trader to make money
U will explain tire,China are welcome

Sorry bro, I think you are missing it.

You cannot be manufacturing the same product for me; I borrow at high amounts to pay your product price + shipping costs to deliver to my retail shop in Trade fair, only for you to compete against me by bringing the same product to the same market directly from your factory at very cheaper rates and expect me to stay silent. That’s very unfair trade practice.

Afrojuju2017:
Manufacturers don't want to be in retail, a manufacturer wants a partner to act as a distributor in a market who can promote that product and if confident relationship is established a manufacturer would even forward sale large volumes to his distributor.

The only business a manufacturer has it that his/her product is competitive in the market for quality and price.

The manufacturer has been forced to come into the retail market or influence a retail agent in this case a Chinese national because the previous distributor is price gouging and making the product uncompetitive.
Manufacturers are not technically supposed to be in the retail field. But it is not unusual to find manufacturers get involved in the retail side of business. It is common here in Nigeria, just as it is with Asian companies. No manufacturer wants to have his warehouse filled with unsold goods. In China, as in other countries, you pay for storage. Your goods must be shipped upon completion of production, to give way for more goods.

Once again, note that Asians consider Africa as a very large market and manufacturers want to be part of the market. A lot of them want to find their ways into the markets, but are hindered by the lack of contacts. The contacts are our importers who purchase products from them. They get information from importers who do not know their motives.

Price gourging? Definite NO.
A serious importer wants to brings goods, sell at very good rates, make quick turnovers and return to the manufacturer with new orders. Prices are increased outside the warehouse of the importer.

Let’s use Dangote as our example again in the Nigerian market. He is the largest petrol producer in the country. Ordinarily, distributors are expected to load in the facility using their own trucks. It was the process until
Last year when Dangote got involved with the logistics end, purchasing thousands of trucks to deliver products nationwide. Transport owners complained, but it remained his policy. Now he’s involved in retailing.

That’s the same way with certain manufacturers. They get involved in the entire value chain, stifling competition and rendering many jobless in the process.

So, yes, the Chinese found the way here. They have been here since for ages, as the country has held a lot of potentials for them.

For youths here who do not understand the implications. They simply think that it is a way of chasing citizens of the SE away from the market. They have not considered the capital flight that comes with it. They have not considered the joblessness that it creates. They same have been screaming when they see Nigerians getting ill treated in Chinese owned businesses.

Who gave ekwueme a vp under shagari the powers to unilaterally dictate or liberalize trade .

Isn't it time to call quit ethnic -scapegoating and dog-whistling on the Igbos over complex issues.

Seems you are mistaking austerity measures of economic stabilization act of 1982 ,which was more of stringent austerity measures to cut down on imports .

Placing embargo on 80 itemized goods, placement of high customs duties on imports etc

Maybe you are referring to the Structural adjustment program (SAP) of IBB,in 86
That opened floodgates of importation, slashing of import tariffs and other offers from imf

The death of industries was dutch disease of 70s-80s not ethnocentric like you're stitching.

Overdependence on oil, infrastructural decay and neglect of other sectors like agriculture. etc

The problem with APC supporters is that they are wired to think wrongly.

They have been so bewitched that they do not know their left from their right. Tribalism and jealousy are their tools of trade.

They think that their problem is the Igbo man.

Have you ever considered that the Igbo man is the backbone of the economy? Aside from Dangote who supplies the petrol, is there any aspect of life that the Ibo man’s trade does no support? Think about it. The house appliances, the phones, laptops, the building materials, car parts, drugs, etc, just mention. That makes them bitter, envious and jealous.

Government has the business of introducing policies that protect trade for Nigerians.
