Why I Think That The Government Is Behind The Chinese Invasion Of Retaii Busines by owobokiri(op): 12:47pm On Sep 17
Every country protects her retail trade. WHY? Together with agriculture, retail trade provides easily accessible jobs for the less skilled amongst the population. It is also easier to start a retail shop than say-opening a factory.
No one has said that the Chinese can not do business in Nigeria, after all they have been running their Chinese shops/towns for ages here, What every thinking mind has said is that they should not torpedo the retail sector of the economy with their cheap adulterated products, at a great risk to the economy.

When a Nigerian trader/business man makes profit in Nigeria, he spends most of it here thereby energising the economy. He builds houses, buying Dangote cement that is produced locally and owned by a fellow Nigerian. He sends his kids to government/private schools in Nigeria and pay handsomely. He buys land in Nigeria most times, and pays to fellow Nigerians thereby enriching the economy. He banks with Nigerian banks that are owned by Nigerian from different regions, and makes shareholders of those banks to rip huge profits. Because he stays in Nigeria, most of his disposable income are spent here, with the attendant VAT payments and taxes. A Chinese seldom wait for all that. Likewise Indians. They are on the next flight out of town with their huge profits..

It is not like the federal government is not aware of all these. They are. It's just that some people in government have chosen to act dodgy for obvious reasons. Otherwise, why are businesses in other sectors being protected from skewed competitions from foreigners, but those areas dominated by easterners are willfully surrendered to foreigners irrespective of the great harm to the local economy?
It is also important to note that the uptick in the presence of the Chinese retail businesses in Nigeria today, is happening as the Chinese authorities start to tighten visa rules for Nigerian businesses/business men..
That is not a coincidence..

When there was a move to start importing beef into this country to augment the low quality products from the fulani herders, the federal government moved swiftly to stop that! Today, irrespective of the quantity or quality of beef produced by the fulani, we are forced to buy solely from them! Infact, a federal ministry of Livestocks have been created to take care of their demands. Buhari banned rice importation. How can a Chinese blatant take over of the economy enrich Nigerians??

When a foreign producer delves into wholesaling and retailing his products.., going as far as opening shops next to the same traders who just bought from him, then there seem to be a deliberately calculated programe to annihilate the "trader".. When the government of the day goes as far as defending the foreign nationals who will import goods into Nigeria, wholesale/retail and then spirit away their earnings back to their home countries overnight, in serious capital flight, and the government supports this, you need no one to tell you that a SILENT WAR is being waged against a segment of the population!

But we have seen this before.
Someone invited the Lebanese and the Indians in the past, to come and do exactly what they want the Chinese to do today.
Where are the bountiful results? Apart from the Chagoury and Chagoury??
Have we learned!?
As long as we make national policies based on primordial disdain for certain groups in this country, we can never move forward.
You can't cut your nose just to spite your face..

Make una stop this nonsense..The Chinese are in SW, we the people of SW want them to continue reducing the price of goods.

When they established business in your region, you can tell them what to do not in South West that you both are non indigenes.

Always crying foul as if they are the only tribe we have in Nigeria

Majority tribe for that matter

Why should anyone even be sad about the Chinese selling at cheaper price if not the bitter people who do not want the progress of Nigeria.

So i will leave a retailer selling same product as Igbo at cheaper price and go and patronize those who are selling at ridiculous price which the product might even be fake self

The Lagos that will crash if a certain tribe stop doing business there , has now become " pls don't allow us to go"

It is getting interesting

No!
They can only sell Chinese products. How many of the Chinese businessman you support are into exporting and selling Nigerian finished goods in China? Zero!

Do you know that as a Nigerian or a Nigerian businessman, you can not export directly into the Chinese Market?? (Do your research)
Do you know that before you can export into China, you must first get an "import licence" from the Chinese authorities, which is almost impossible because it is only given to Chinese trading companies?

As a result, most Nigerians that export stuffs like woods and others to China do so through Chinese people who have that license, and this takes a huge hit on their profits.

And by the way, what stops other Nigerians from the South West from getting involved in trading? Must you invite the Indians, the Lebanese and the Chinese to come and fight your battles the same way you invited the British, the Egyptians and the Chadians to come and fight your civil warhuh

Dear Progressives, behold the mental constitution of the individual(s) you argue with around here.

To remind you, this is one of the characters that insulted Gringori the most on the thread "What is Obi doing in Anambra state?". Today, the same species insists Gringori did wonderfully well in Anambra and deserves Aso Rock.

Here we go again. "They hate us" and "want to destroy us". This is about competitive advantage that makes goods available to a nation's citizens most affordably.

Japan creates Toyota, Nissan, Mazda cars etal Nigerisns favour. If they can supply us those vehicle directly, since we cannot create anything remotely similar, which responsible Government will allow you guys travel to Japan and import those vehicle to Nigeria at 30% mark-up?

Is your desire to make profit greater than the need for Nigerians to pay less for what they need, and thus have more money available for their life activities, deploying the principles of competitive advantage?

I wonder OOh. Market penetratration should be driven by competition and not monopoly.

Keep the Chinese out so a group can keep exploiting Nigerians, already some of the poorest in Africa, with 300% or so mark-up?

whereas, optimally, we can simply open the market to Chinese direct import so Nigerians can obtain imported goods they need cheaper and have more money to address their living expenses.

Leave your lazy couch and go round the country to see vehicles including buses, SUVs, trucks, and even Armoured Personnel Carriers being manufactured by various companies from Innoson to Nord to Proforce and several other indigenous vehicle manufacturers.

You buy those foreign cars because you don't believe in your Nigerian-made products, not because "we cannot create anything remotely similar".

Look, learn to work with reality. I am the last person anyone can accuse of inferiority complex. Nigerians value vehicle reliability above everything.

Virtually no Nigerian will choose Innoson above Toyota.

You are too argumentatively obtuse, and always has been, to note what is obvious. Whereas I am a businessman used to being pragmatically logical rather than a blindly and unobjectively pro-African protagonist like you.

Look below to note the most important components of vehicles, i.e engine and transmission etal, are imported by Innoson etc.

The simple point is that if Japanese vehicles are better, higher quality and far more reliable for our roads and weather then we negotiate for them to get to us cheaper rather than blindly patronise Innoson etal that are inferior, ultimately poorer value for money long run and end up costing costing Nigerians more because they last far less than Japanese vehicle.

We should focus on what we have competitive advantage over, like refining and exporting our crude oil as PMS exporting agro-produce etc, instead of engaged in jaundiced patriotism of activities, like Car manufacturing we do not have the capacity or personnel to excel at.

"Competitive advantage" as how?
Name one finished product that you are competing against the Chinese with. Just one!

You do know that you export zilch to the Chinese. Your worn out factories have been lying fallow, because the frauds you imposed on us all as APC rulers can never concort any reasonable policies to fastrack the process of industrialisation.

You are exporting basically nothing to China apart from hydrocarbons, sterile agricultural products like yams and some other stuffs like woods. Basic raw materials..

On the contrary, the Chinese are exporting tens of billions of dollars worth of FINISHED PRODUCTS into this economy. And your Lagos APC response to that is to invite more Chinese to come in and open shops and retail their products so that over pampered government workers like you can buy imported products cheap!

Thought you said that the reason for the hike in import tarrifs by the same Tinubu, and all that anti import policies he introduced was to discourage Importations, and to quadruple local productions..
Explain to the reading public as to how the opening of thousands of Chinese shops in Nigeria will lead to local i industrialization..

I really don't understand you guys. The simple point is that is that if China can manufacture and deliver items we need to Nigerians cheaper than all else we should engage them to supply us directly and gain best purchasing value.

We should then focus on what we have competitive advantage over. Like export of high quality agro-produce, because of our verdant land, and export of refined derivate of good grade of crude oil, in the form of PMS, etc.

How is this a difficult concept for anyone to understand? The economy of nations must focus on making money from what they have the capacity to do better than others and import everything else they need. As simple as that.

Majority of you are just unobjectively argumentative instead of being g objectively logical.

The Igbo man is built to adapt. You don't need to worry about him. This will only hasten the fall of the zoo through flight of its wealth to China. We need to encourage the Chinese to come in as much as possible. The Igbos will find a way to support them and profit from it. They'll resist for sure at the beginning but they'll keep quiet eventually , study the market and then learn to profit from it. It's in the genes. The zoo will become a vassal state for others due to the black man's inability to see past his nose. I don't mind that at all. I don't think you should. The impoverishment of Nigeria is sth I'm totally cool with.

What is striking here is that you seem to be finding it sooooo difficult to understand that when a global super power that will go down in history as the biggest manufacturers of goods ever seen, is allowed to mass produce goods in high quantities, to mass wholesale those goods in mass quantity in a particular country, and to even open shops to retail and hawk those goods, the net effects on the local economy of the receiver nation will ne devastating...

Chinese are welcome to do business in southwest.

Anyone not ready to compete should relocate back to their village.

Afterall the good being imported by the southeast into the country are produce in China factory.

Nigeria cannot continue to be reap-off by its citizens.

You are the one guilty of tribalism not me. I only got involved in this debate because someone mentioned on another thread some Nigerian traders want Chinese importers banned from operating in Nigeria so then can continue to go to China to purchase good for 70k they would then sell to Nigerians for 300k.

Whereas the Chinese, trading directly with Nigerian, would like supply for around 80k as Temu is doing today.

It is about gaining maximum purchasing value for Nigerians. We should focus on what we can export, per our comparative advantage, so we increase our trade surplus instead of importing goods Nigerians pay far more for because of our middlemen importers.

Import what we need, and concentrate on having the comparative advantage creating, at maximum value, what we can export for maximum profit because we have comparative value producing them.

Not Rocket science

They did it in agricultural sector by importing cheap foods from China which almost drove Nigerian local farmers out of business late last year, especially cassava and other agro farmers. You can ask any farmer to tell you how Tinubu's government almost destroyed Nigerian local farmers in their desperate effort to bring down cost of food after using thoughtless voodoo economics from hell fire to wreck the previously flourishing Nigerian economy.

What is wrong in having the manufacturer of those goods in Nigeria.
Its only good if they are coming to set up production factories in Nigeria and not to engage in local retail trading after manufacturing, its unethical to do as a foreign manufacturer, you can do it in your home country if you so wish but in another country where it will negatively affect the local traders helping to employ the citizens of the country.

In countries like Korea that I am very familiar with, you cannot easily setup a retail trading shop to sell the same items local Koreans are retailing in Korea. To even secure the license is not easy. You can setup local restaurants to sell your native foods to people but not to setup local retail trading shops employing Korean local population. Governments of every nation do policies to protect the jobs of their locals because if they go out of job, it will affect the nation's economy and the government too.
