The Lebanese have always been in both retail and wholesale Business in Nigeria and it is not new it has been so for over a century

No Govt protects mass importation that has already undermined numerous local industries

Are the Nigerians in china selling Nigerian products in China 🇨🇳?
No!
They can only sell Chinese products. How many of the Chinese businessman you support are into exporting and selling Nigerian finished goods in China? Zero!

Do you know that as a Nigerian or a Nigerian businessman, you can not export directly into the Chinese Market?? (Do your research)
Do you know that before you can export into China, you must first get an "import licence" from the Chinese authorities, which is almost impossible because it is only given to Chinese trading companies?

As a result, most Nigerians that export stuffs like woods and others to China do so through Chinese people who have that license, and this takes a huge hit on their profits.
What do you know apart from "Oh, we have finally encircled them igbo people.."?

And by the way, what stops other Nigerians from the South West from getting involved in trading? Must you invite the Indians, the Lebanese and the Chinese to come and fight your battles the same way you invited the British, the Egyptians and the Chadians to come and fight your civil warhuh

You used to mock them in their "4 by4 shops, how come you are now the ones trying to bring foreigners to take over the same "economically irrelevant" 4 by 4 shops you mock endlesslyhuh
Lol, those ones are afraid of their shadows. Chinese don suddenly become their brothers and sisters ? Since when grin

Op, na cause for alarm. Igbos traders will just study the trading pattern Chinese use and also profit from it too.

They are many igbo traders in China most especially in commercial cities like ghuazoau and shezen. Even most of our people also own factories and industries in China. If they can contact those of our people doing retail business in China, they will give them a solid response.

Igbos and Chinese are born traders. At last, it will be a win win for everybody. After all, the goods are Chinese products that where Chinese traders have an advantage.

You are always suffering from inferiority complex.. no one is after anyone. Few years ago I celebrated Baba Buhari closing our border for our rice farmers to grow, but what happened after then? A bag of rice skyrocketed to 150K and the farmers are everywhere boasting how they are milking us.

Tinubu came to power and open to border to help the masses and now everyone can eat without breaking the bank.

If you decide to sell your product for N10,000 and anyone else chooses to sell the same product for N1,000, how is that government's fault?

You dont have monopoly of the market.

Same way you secure business visas to do business in China is same way the Chinese secure business visas to operate in Nigeria.

Nigeria is not a xenophobic country like SA, so stop throwing tantrums at other people's success. If you cant beat them, join them. Period.

Its only good if they are coming to set up production factories in Nigeria and not to engage in local retail trading after manufacturing, its unethical to do as a foreign manufacturer, you can do it in your home country if you so wish but in another country where it will negatively affect the local traders helping to employ the citizens of the country.

In countries like Korea that I am very familiar with, you cannot easily setup a retail trading shop to sell the same items local Koreans are retailing in Korea. To even secure the license is not easy. You can setup local restaurants to sell your native foods to people but not to setup local retail trading shops employing Korean local population. Governments of every nation do policies to protect the jobs of their locals because if they go out of job, it will affect the nation's economy and the government too.
Did south Korean retailers, ripping off their fellow citizens through high profit margin?

The same Tinubu which, his wife donated #2b to factories producing weaving fabric in Abia and also promoting their fabrics, by promising them, she will wear it on the day of her husband's inauguration?

Only a mad man will be supporting tribe or religion like bambiala.

Even some Igbo nairalander that struggling to buy all these stuff at higher prices, will still go against Tinubu, just because of tribal sentiment

Why not if it offers economic comparative advantage that lowers cost of goods for Nigerians and allows us focus on what we have superior comparative advantage over?

Even nations like the UK and USA have sectors Asians are dominant in because of the principle of trading and manufacturing comparative advantage.

The concept is simple. If you do not have the human resources and expertise to produce finished goods cheaper than others can then you should buy from them, save money, and then concentrate on what you can produce cheaper and better than others to export.

I am very happy the government are coming to consumer's aid.
The truth is that the government is grappling with inflation as a result of crucial reforms that will push us towards developed nation status yet will come with some pain and sacrifice that cannot be avoided.

Strategies like this should be viewed as palliative to allow Nigerians afford more and lessen the purchasing cost burden on the average Nigerian.

Nothing wrong even, in my opinion, if the Nigerian Government make the effort to move Nigeria towards being more multi-cultural via attracting foreigners with useful specialist skills, that can accelerate the growth and development of Nigeria, to relocate here and gain Nigerian citizenship.

No great nation of the world not doing it be it USA, Canada , UK etal. UK, for example, head-hunt medical personnel, Doctors etal, from Nigeria to sustain their health sector.

You are the one guilty of tribalism not me. I only got involved in this debate because someone mentioned on another thread some Nigerian traders want Chinese importers banned from operating in Nigeria so then can continue to go to China to purchase good for 70k they would then sell to Nigerians for 300k.

Whereas the Chinese, trading directly with Nigerian, would like supply for around 80k as Temu is doing today.

It is about gaining maximum purchasing value for Nigerians. We should focus on what we can export, per our comparative advantage, so we increase our trade surplus instead of importing goods Nigerians pay far more for because of our middlemen importers.

Import what we need, and concentrate on having the comparative advantage creating, at maximum value, what we can export for maximum profit because we have comparative value producing them.

Not Rocket science
You're still swallowing saliva.
Imported goods are imported goods.
Once you buy any imported goods, you energise a foreign company over your indigenous alternatives. It doesn't matter if the goods were importer by Nigerians or by the Chinese.
Chinese are not here to develop your economy. They are here to follow the path of the Lebanese Chagoury and Chagoury ro make money.

When you give them easy access to your retail market, you are basically injecting steroids in their arms and encouraging them to double down on dumping their leftovers into the Nigerian markets.

Let the Chinese come and build factories. No problems. After all, the Americans have factories in China. But anyone trying to weave any sort of arguments that potrays his support for the Chinese attempts to take over the Nigerian informal trading sector as an act of patriotism, is living in denial

I wonder OOh. Market penetratration should be driven by competition and not monopoly.

Keep the Chinese out so a group can keep exploiting Nigerians, already some of the poorest in Africa, with 300% or so mark-up?

whereas, optimally, we can simply open the market to Chinese direct import so Nigerians can obtain imported goods they need cheaper and have more money to address their living expenses.
.

Does the money the Chinese make stay in Nigeria, or does it take the next flight out to Guangzhou or Shanghai, effectively eroding the value of your Naira?

Why not force the Chinese to buy Nigerian goods and export with the profit they have made in Nigeria, just like the Chinese government does to foreigners.

I am into medical production, I buy medical equipments and source raw materials from China. You cannot send money out of China, you can only convert same to Chinese good and export out of the country. You see how smart they are?

Expect your Naira to keep falling flat due to capital flight because you are blinded by parochial and primordial sentiments of 'we must deal with them'.

Some of us who studied the trajectory of the economy became overnight millionaires due to Buhari's incompetence.

The guy was so clueless that you could predict every of his baseless economic move..

The same thing will happen here again, I will save up in dollars and wait for your naira to tumble downhill.

Heads or tails, most of us will always win economically..

So what do you have superior comparative advantage of, and why are you not forcing the Chinese to buy them and export to their country, instead of sending money out of the already malaised Nigerian economy.

Let us import beef from Australia , Argentina or Brazil. It will be cheaper there. The ones being produced by the fulani are unhealthy, skinny, lack nutrients and are poorly raised.
Australia and Argentina and Brazil produce top quality.
So why is Tinubu forcing us to buy from only the fulanis, while going further to create a Federal Ministry of Livestocks for them, when we already have the Federal Ministry of Agriculturehuh
Is that not protectionism nased on tribalism??

Nobody is ripping anybody off.

The cost of doing business in Nigeria is too high. Importers too are not finding it easy. They pay a lot of taxes. They also have to recoup their money. It is us the final consumers that bear the price. Is not anybodies fault. Government policies cause all these.

They pay high import duty fee to clear their good at the port. Including shipping and logistics fees. Together with government taxes that follows it. The government is not doing anything for them. They bear all the cost alone.

They are will also add their profit. That is what you people call extortion. Is not. Government policies cause all these.

No matter how you look at it, inviting foreigners to take up retail market is to poison the local economy.

All am seeing happening in this government is the connivance of the elites to feast on the masses. The only sad part of it is that we are too divided along diverse lines to come together to demand real governance from our politicians.

We all will see the results of our actions today later

Tinubu’s supporters are not seeing what you have seen. Their hatred, just like that of hamas and Hezbollah will ruin them.

If foreigners continue to dominate in retail businesses in Nigeria, they think that their people will be immune to the consequences.
