This situation reminded me of a case When I was still in Nigeria a work colleague was pregnant, she had planned to go abroad to deliver when its close, But I think around 6months the baby came premature, she went to a private hospital but they couldnt handle it, they referred her to LUTH.

Everything you described above was what happened to her. No bed, understaffed, no medication, the place dirty.

Despite how critical her case was, there were people who were with cases more critical, They started having to call influential people she knows to influence her getting a bed. After she got a bed now the issues came. Some times they will simply tell her that they need her to get this medicine and they will tell her around 11pm or 12midnight. How many pharmacies were open all night in Nigeria of mid 2000s?
So her husband and friends will start calling everywhere, driving everywhere all over Lagos to get medication. Even in the ward the whole place was dirty

One night, the baby had a crisis, she called on the nurse to get a doctor, After waiting for long and not seeing anyone while the baby was gasping for life, she went to find the nurse and asked for the doctor. Guess what? The nurse told her "she didn't have phone credit to call the doctor". She said she wanted to hurt that nurse, that why didn't you come to tell me that credit was the problem and we could have used my phone? Well the baby died

People initially told her to sue LUTH management etc, She just decided to move on with her loss

I heard her next pregnancy as soon as she confirmed and beyond first trimester, she took Leave of absence at work and reported to America where she paid a lot but at least she got her baby living

This is the reality.

Even if person get card for the best hospitals in America, the fact that you currently live in Nigeria means you can always have health emergency. And when you have that health emergency, the final resort will always be a teaching hospital where you will most likely feel brunt of Nigeria's failed Healthcare system.

One thing u also noticed is that empathy is lost on most of the staff of our teaching hospitals. They act like no matter how serious your loved ones' case may be, they have seen worse. It just looks as if something already died in those nurses, matrons and doctors
