NIGERIA'S REAL BATTLE: WE SHOULD NOT BE FIGHTING FOR MORE SALARY, BUT FOR MORE VALUE That has always been my worry. Every time I hear the Labour Union, Trade Union Congress and other groups shouting "increase salary," I ask myself - where do they think the money will come from? It feels like we are deceiving ourselves. We are fighting the wrong battle. A salary increase without a decrease in the cost of living is not a blessing, it is a cycle. If the government increases salary, they will also increase the means of paying that salary. They get their money from us - through taxes, VAT, fuel price, electricity tariff, customs duties, levies. So in the end, we pay for our own salary increase. It is like a small family. When the family grows from 3 children to 6 children, the father must find a way to increase his income to feed everyone. Where does our government get its own income? From us. So fighting only for more salary is like asking your father to give you more pocket money while you increase his house rent. Our fight should be different. We should fight for what salary can buy, not for the figure. The focus of Labour should be to make the little we have enough to provide the basics of life: Food, Shelter, Clothing, and Security. These four things should not be luxury in Nigeria. Anyone who wants more than these - a bigger car, a bigger house, luxury - should work extra for it. But the basic should be easy for the common man. Food should be affordable. A man earning minimum wage should be able to feed his family without panic. Shelter should be possible. Rent in Lagos and other cities should not take 70% of a yearly salary. Transport should be humane. If you have money to buy a car, fuel should not cost you your kidney. Even if fuel is sold for N5,000 per litre, those who don't have cars should not be punished with high bus fares and high food prices. Food gets expensive because fuel is expensive. That is the connection our leaders are ignoring. We are a country that produces crude oil, yet we suffer for fuel. We have vast farmlands, yet we suffer for food. We have manpower, yet unemployment is high. So what is the salary increase solving? If minimum wage moves from N70,000 to N150,000 tomorrow, what stops a bag of rice from moving from N80,000 to N150,000? What stops landlords from increasing rent by 100%? Nothing. What we need is price control and serious government investment in the things that make life cheaper. 1. Food Security: Support real farmers, provide security on farms, fix storage and transportation. 2. Energy Security: Fix electricity. When a small business owner doesn't need to buy fuel to power his generator every day, his cost drops. 3. Housing and Transport: Invest in mass, affordable public transport and low-cost housing. Until Labour, TUC and civil society start fighting for these things, we will continue to run in circles. They will increase salary by 10%, and the market will increase hardship by 50%. The true welfare of a worker is not in how much is written on the payslip, but in how far that money can go. Let the small money be powerful. |

These leaders don't understand this. You have NEVER SEEN your local government chairman buy fuel from the filing stations before.... Even if they did (in secret), the funds were provided for it via allowances. Government officials can ALWAYS afford anything they want - economy bleeding or not. It is the citizens that continue to bare the costly pain! Bastards. |

Today's 70k can only buy 5 bags or less. Tinubu is a failure pro max |
