The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) arbitration tribunal severely criticised Abubakar Malami, former attorney-general of the federation (AGF), over his handling of the Mambilla hydropower dispute.

In the decision reviewed by TheCable, the tribunal found that Malami deliberately acted against Nigeria’s interest.

In unusually strong language, it said Malami maintained an “inappropriate relationship” with Leno Adesanya, the promoter of Sunrise, and participated in what it described as a “corrupt deal” connected with the settlement agreements at the centre of the arbitration.

During the UK trial, JPMorgan's counsel highlighted that Malami had written to President Buhari in September 2017 stating there was "insufficient evidence to support allegations that the Resolution Agreements were part of a fraudulent and corrupt scheme" — the exact opposite of the case.

In a 2023 memo to Buhari, Malami acknowledged that Nigeria's prospects of winning the OPL 245 cases were slim and recommended terminating all related litigation so the country could convert OPL 245 to an OML and exploit the block while oil prices remained favorable.

Malami publicly prosecuted the case abroad while privately telling Buhari he doubted the evidence, and ultimately conceded the litigation was unwinnable.

This was Malami's hustle.

Get hold of pending corruption files and cases , reach a private "settlement" with those involved and then kill the case .
I recall how there was serious friction between them VP, Osinbanjo and Malami.

Osinbanjo has requested certain case files of ongoing international arbitrations to study but was outrightly denied by Malami.

It was this same Malami that exonerated a minister of petroleum and a high level Nigerian OPEC executive for the disastrous P&ID scandal .

The man was regulating corruption and not in any way fighting it.
