Extortion Tactics Used By Lecturers For Grades In Tertiary Institutions by yarofearless(op): 5:33pm On Sep 24
The extortion tactics by lecturers across tertiary institutions continue to destroy academic integrity. Known locally as “sorting,” these corrupt practices force students to trade cash or sexual favors for passing grades. Consequently, hard-working undergraduates face artificial failures while unearned marks go to those who pay.

Anti-graft agencies receive frequent petitions regarding this systemic corruption. Despite university dismissal notices, rogue academics keep devising hidden ways to exploit vulnerable students.

Unpacking common grade extortion schemes

Corrupt academic staff use various coercive tactics to extract money from undergraduates:

• Compulsory handout sales: Lecturers force students to buy high-priced class notes containing tracking codes.

• Direct cash sorting: Class reps collect fixed monetary payments to upgrade failing scores before final submissions.

• Coerced private tutoring: Dons compel students to register for expensive off-campus revision classes.

• Sexual harassment: Male lecturers target female students with threats of academic failure to force compliance.

The impact of sexual exploitation and financial demands

The “sex for marks” phenomenon remains the most damaging aspect of campus extortion. Independent studies indicate that over 60 percent of female undergraduates face unwelcome sexual advances during their academic years. When students refuse these demands, lecturers intentionally fail them or delay project approvals indefinitely.

Furthermore, financial extortion places heavy pressure on low-income families. Students who cannot afford forced book purchases often lose critical continuous assessment marks. Interested readers can check public ethics guidelines on the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission portal.

Ending systemic corruption on campuses

Substantial reforms must occur to eradicate these illegal practices. University governing councils must establish independent disciplinary boards, secure reporting channels, and strictly enforce anti-sexual harassment laws.

Until authorities dismantle these extortion tactics by lecturers, academic qualifications from higher institutions risk losing public confidence.

I would have said some students provoke the sexual advances from the lectures with their indecent/provocative dressing but some of these lectures are perverts, even the decent or serious students get these advances too.

Morals have gone to the dogs in Nigeria at large.

University of Calabar should enjoy a comfortable spot in the country's all-time most corrupt institutions, when using these metrics of judgement.

It's so bad that departmental class reps now assume god status simply because they act as the financial bridge between students and lecturers.

Not shockingly, there are several accounts of class reps buying cars before graduation, all from the spoils of extorting students.

Professor Cyril Ndifon formerly of the Law faculty comes to mind😐.

There are hardworking lecturers, but they are few. The rotten eggs amongst us are the ones disgracing the noble lecturing profession.

I myself, I don't tell students to buy handouts or ask female students to meet me at a hotel. I have been a subject of constant attacks just because I refuse to extort and exploit students. I just dey use tactics to fend them off.

At the beginning of each class, I tell them that I don't accept bribes or sexual gratification. What you write in exams is what you score. Simple. If you cannot read, defer the course to the next semester because if I get any student involved in illegalities, I'll report them to the school authorities, the law enforcement and the DSS.

If you wan show me say you be umbrella man, I go tell you say 48 dey do and undo.

How true? you want to know if it happens or you want to know the level of truth?

No! it is not true

it is years and years of fabricated stories that just pump themselves out of the various universities.

HOW TRUE?
Just like when you say something is RED and the next man asks, HOW RED? like you want to know if it is TRUE ENOUGH.

sadly this is the same kind of question someone will ask when you tell them that people just like them are sleeping in IDP CAMPS and doing every manner of "what they call" sin just to eat breakfast.

it is never true enough till it happens to someone you have to step in and fight for... or maybe even you

Na today? Course reps are the assistant gods of the department.

The worse corruption occurs in management, law and social science faculties. The lecturers are randy and exploitative. They have no morals and don't care whose ox is gored. They are in the majority. Coincidentally, these are the faculties with the highest number of female students, so everything na siririwerere.

The least is faculties of science and computing. The lecturers na akpọ. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Male to female for sex...

The way it was stated paints a picture of only men asking female students sex for grade.

Sex for grade is never a gender base thing. A female lecturer can ask a male student for sex as it relates to grades

Simply my opinion

You mean university management inflating the number of school students and school fees to profit from NELFUND scheme?

Or asking convocating students to pay for convocation fee, certificate fee, result verification fee, vestment fee, alumni fee, professional fee?

There are a thousand ways na. No wonder universities wey dey on top 50 by 50 land dey spring up for this country everyday like Bokku supermarket.

All my siblings & many students i know dat left Lagos to school in Unizik Anambra, don't wanna come back again they rather prefer to remain in Awka/Enugu/Asaba/Owerri.

I wonder wetin dey sup particularly for dat Awka(Ifite) & Asaba dat these students chose to establish there after Uni, i think I'll travel there & see things for myself.

It's more than common. Though how rampant it is depends more on the course you are studying. It's very very high in departments in the social sciences, management sciences, humanity and education than courses that are health related where it is very very expensive even if a lecturer decides to engage thus, making it extremely difficult for most students to afford it.
This menace is affecting our society badly. My major concern is that it sometimes affects the grade of the serious and dedicated students that actually burned the midnight candles to study for exams. For example in most schools if the total number of students in a particular grade level is very high, the school Senate committee may order the department to slash the scores of students in order to reduce the number of students in that grade level thus, bringing down both the innocent and the guilty just because they want to protect the image of the school to the outside world.

Don't be too conclusive. That it didn't happened to you doesn't make it non-existent. I can attest that while I was there between 2004 and 2008, it happened. I was a victim and I know some other victims too. Though, selling of handout or private coaching were not part of it but you see sorting and sex for Mark, no be today. Though, on a coded level.
