Let's Fix Africa First: My Position On Africa And The UN Security Council

There is a mentality among African leaders that we must change. The mentality of perpetual victimhood. That the West owes us something. That the world must give us a seat because we shouted injustice.

I listened to President William Ruto of Kenya at UNGA demanding two permanent seats with veto power for Africa. That our exclusion from the UN Security Council is unfair and unjust. President Ruto is right to demand dignity for Africa, but dignity is built, not begged for. I respect President Ruto, but I disagree with the approach.

If Africa wants a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, we must work for it.

We must build our economy and make it globally competitive. We must build our society so it produces progressive citizens, not economic migrants and refugees. We must build our defense and national security so we can secure our own streets and not outsource our security to Russia or the United States. We must build our healthcare so our presidents don't run to London when they have an ear infection. Our house must be habitable so our presidents will not spend most of their time living in Geneva, or hiding in Paris and Dubai doing nothing spectacular while their own country is uninhabitable for their own citizens. We must build our education so our young people can be productive and add value to Africa. It is only then that we can say Africa has come of age and deserves a seat at the table.

Africa has 54 countries and 1.4 billion people. That is true. But what is our share of world trade? What is our share of global manufacturing? What is our share of global patents? What is our share of global GDP? We are less than 3 percent of the global economy, but we have over 60 percent of the world's extreme poor. We contribute peacekeepers, but we also contribute the largest number of people living on aid.

The UN Security Council was not built on pity in 1945. It was built on power. America, Russia, China, Britain, and France got permanent seats because they won a war and they had built economies and militaries that the world could not ignore. They did not beg for it. My position is simple: Fix your home first.

Nobody respects a man whose family is poor, dependent on neighbors and relatives to eat, unstable, crisis-prone, and whose house is leaking so badly that his own children are running away to live in other people's houses. That is what we have done. Our children are on boats to Europe. Our doctors are in Canada. Our engineers are driving Uber in America. Our best brains are everywhere except home. And we want to go to the UN to demand a permanent seat?

For Africa to be respected, we must rebuild the system. We must phase out the old unproductive order that has dominated member states across the continent, an order that has left Africans in extreme and terrible situations despite our huge potential, and build Africa just like others built their societies.

This is what the Citizens Democratic Alliance is committed to building in Nigeria. A Nigeria that is secure, productive, democratic, technologically advanced, and globally respected, built on justice, accountability, inclusion, innovation, equal opportunity and shared prosperity. A Nigeria where lives and property are protected, where education and healthcare are accessible to all, where economic opportunities are available regardless of ethnicity, religion or gender, where citizens are safe, where our communities are habitable, where our economy is just and industrialized, and where every Nigerian can realize their full potential.

Let's Work To Make Africa Work. Let's Work To Make Nigeria Work.

G5 countries' leaders (besides China) would go there and be heaping praises on themselves while our jobless rulers go there to clap. I really wonder what any African leader is going there to do.

Funny enough, African leaders go with the largest delegation.

This is an eye-opener. All my years, I have wondered why Africa is treated as second class. Is it possible to pursue development of Africa while simultaneously demanding for fairness at the world stage?

If not for madness, you're asking for two veto seats when North America that your citizens are running to have only one seat.
Asia that's building most of your infrastructure and goods have only one seat.
African leaders are becoming more useless by the day.
That's how a xenophobic country will be shouting free Palestine
Another forced contraption will insist that Palestine needs to be recognised as a state
Africa needs to wake up. The world is fast leaving us behind. They are fast seeing us as a continent and people to be tolerated rather than respected

Kudos to the Op. Hope your party will not end up as another APC

Unfortunately. We can't.

Africa cannot negotiate without leverage. We must first build leverage before making demands. That way, no one can ignore us.

At present, Africa will only attract sympathy and pity. And the man who is pitied gets the shorter end of the stick, if the stick even reaches him.

Absolutely Not!

We will never replicate what the establishment is doing or recycle them. We intend to keep our focus on what we want to achieve for Nigeria beyond acquisition of power.

The UN is dead already.

The war in Iran, Ukraine and the belligerent Israel still permitted to attend despite carrying on it's genocide on Palestinians both in Gaza and the West Bank as well as its invasion and occupation of southern Lebanon is proof that the UN is a dead carcass .
Re: Let's Fix Africa First: My Position On Africa And The UN Security Council by TonyeBarcanista(op): 11:01pm On Sep 24
Maybe, we should accept one reality. The UN was never meant to prevent war by force or act as a global police. It was created to provide a platform for dialogue so nations can find reasons to avoid war.

President Roosevelt and Churchill literal idea is to create a club where the strongest guys (US, UK, USSR, France, and China) are permanent members with veto. That way they will never leave the table, because they own the table.

You get?

The UN was created solely to give Israel legitimacy.

It's a rogue entity far worse than the League of Nations .

Well, UN cannot be created solely to give legitimacy to Israel that did not exist when UN was created. Was UN used later to give Israel legitimacy? Yes, through Resolution 181 in 1947. But that is not why it was created.

The League of Nations failed because it had no power. The UN was created to correct that by giving the winners of WWII veto power so they stay at the table and don't start WWIII.

That's why the UN was created first and it was same UN that ignored all the genocide and terrorism carried out by Jews on the Palestinian population and still went on to recognize Israel and then admit Israel into the UN

My brother, UN is a platform of power, not fairness.

It has not been perfect or fair on Palestine. It has failed many times, not just Palestine, but Rwanda in 1994, Srebrenica in 1995, and Congo today. That's exactly my point about UN.

UN does not act based on fairness. It acts based on power and interests of the P5. When the P5 agree, UN acts. When they disagree, UN watches.

In 1947, the P5 agreed to partition Palestine, so UN recognized Israel in 1948. In 1994, the P5 did not agree on Rwanda, so UN watched 800,000 people die.

This is the reality

Can you tell that to Ukraine where Russia is in its 3rd year of war there? What about to Taiwan? China says it will take it by force if necessary. And Tibet? China has occupied it since 1950. Georgia (2008)? t Crimea (2014)? What about Hong Kong (2019)?

My brother, no P5 is "ok." That is my point. US, UK, France, Russia, China, all 5 use UN veto to protect their own interest, not to protect fairness.

US vetoes for Israel. Russia vetoes for Syria and Ukraine. China vetoes for Taiwan and Tibet. UK and France veto to keep their influence in Africa.

All of them respect only power.

So any one who is anti imperialist is an Islamist?

The US you worship today was formed on the backs of the most brutal enslavement of Africans; genocide of the indigenous people and there was an active and fiercely upheld racial apartheid system up till the 60s.

I am even surprised that you now praise Britain.

Africa is not developed enough to merit a seat at the council but it is developed enough to be squeezed of resources year in and out, to the point that europe as we know it today, is almost becoming entirely dependent on the continent for energy imports?

Now that you're done washing Atiku's behind with your tongue, you're using every available nairaland medium to sell your useless political platform in the name of citizens development abi😊?

Well said.

Who listens to an extreme poverty, jobless person, whose children are stark illiterates in extended family or clan meetings?

Instead of blaming others for our enduring underdevelopment, we need to get our act together and work out our collective prosperity and wellbeing to employ well paid government workers to make basic services and utilities available for everyone, Basic services and utilities like water supply, sanitation, free education for all children and free basic healthcare for all residents.

TheBedWench:
The one-drop rule is a social and legal principle of racial classification that was historically prominent in the United States in the 20th century. It asserted that any person with even one ancestor of black ancestry ("one drop" of black blood) is considered black (Negro or colored in historical terms).

This concept became codified into the law of some states in the early 20th century. It was associated with the principle of "invisible blackness" that developed after the long history of racial interaction in the South, which had included the hardening of slavery as a racial caste and later segregation. It is an example of  hypodescent, the automatic assignment of children of a mixed union between different socioeconomic or ethnic groups to the group with the lower status, regardless of proportion of ancestry in different groups.[3]

The one-drop rule is defunct in law in the United States and was never codified into federal law.

or to live under black rule with illusory political dignity and without basic life- sustaining standards for the majority?

The path forward for Africa lies in cultivating higher and adequate levels of personal and communal agential integrity as well as full personal responsibility and productivity. Not to mention creativity (including epistemic creativity), productive justice (such as merit and freedom), harmony and reconciliation at local and international levels, and a proper domestication of capitalism and other related values and institutions.

Africa must stop wasting her time on dreams of socialism because it is a system of wealth distribution primarily. Whereas, capitalism is a system of wealth creation primarily, and wealth has to be produced before it can be distributed.
