Re: Fixed Deposit Vs Mutual Funds: Which Pays Returns With ₦100k Investment? by iamonpointa:
For those asking how much the man who is getting 100k on his fixed deposit invested, it must be around N9m (if it's at the typical 15% interest). It's pretty simple to calculate. He gets 15% of his investment every year, and 10% of that will be deducted as tax.

For example, on 10m fixed for a year at 15%, the total interest will be 1.5m. 10% will be deducted as tax on the 1.5m, so 1.350m. Divide 1.350m by 12 (months) to get the monthly return. N112,500

I have a friend who fixed 100m, and he gets 1.120m monthly on his investment. It's not a lot of money (at least for someone who has a spare 100m to invest), but it will surely cover a lot of bills. This country has systematically impoverished all of us.

For those who think he should be doing business with the money, he already has a business that is doing well—that was how he made the money in the first place.
Besides, the business environment in this country is volatile. If you come across some big money, it will be better for you to put it into fixed deposit than go into a business you aren't 100% familiar with. You will lose the money, your energy, and your sanity.

My friend gets 13.5m (net) on his investment every year, without having to do anything. If he used that money to build a house, there's nowhere in this country where he will get 13.5m (net) as annual rent—on a house of 100m. That is not including the stress, time, and energy that will go into building/acquiring the house, getting tenants and getting them to pay promptly, and maintaining the property (which might take a lot of the money).
The common counter is that the house will appreciate in value. It won't, it will depreciate. ONLY the land will appreciate. And if I truly believe that a land will appreciate, I would rather buy the land (say for about 30% of the capital) and find a way to secure it (because owning a land can sometimes be a headache), then invest the 70% in fixed deposit.
NB: fixed deposit is nowhere near the best investment you can do, but until you find a low-risk investment you are certain will make you better returns, you will be better off with fixed deposit.

Even though the example I gave up there is about owning a rentable property, I believe a lot of other investments in this country are worse. Most people just work/invest without doing the maths.

If you're stuck in Nigeria, you can't afford to be financially illiterate.
Always seek out information on how to best handle your money—no matter how small the amount is. Otherwise, you'll be running on a financial treadmill—where things will remain the same no matter how hard you work.

Imagine that! On a fixed deposit at 15%, you would be getting 2.7m (net) on that 20m without having to do anything. No stressful tenants, no maintenance, no wahala.

Yours is even better if you ask me. I have properties worth almost 40m in ****, I barely get 1m on them. A lot of which is spent on maintenance. I don't even care about making money on them anymore, make dem dey there. They are currently being used by family. At least they maintain it better than strangers.

Had I known better before I acquired them, I wouldn't have bothered.

Oluwamuyiwa, I honestly like what you are doing. 👏🏽

The fact that you are running a car wash in Dugbe and still taking time to learn about investments, save consistently, and document your experience is something worth encouraging.

My only advice is: don't rush to make the investment comparison look better than it actually is. When you are writing about money, people will rely on those figures, so make sure every rate, tax treatment, withdrawal period and calculation is properly verified before publishing.

Also, distinguish between your actual experience and an illustration. If you didn't actually put ₦100,000 into both products for 90 days, don't call it a test or say one “paid” you a particular amount. Say it is a hypothetical comparison based on the quoted rates.

And don't make it sound as if Money Market Funds are automatically better simply because the quoted return is higher. Look at return, risk, liquidity, fees, taxation and capital protection.

One thing I particularly like about your story is the ₦334 daily saving. That's actually the part I'd emphasize more. You are showing people that you don't need to start with millions before you begin learning about investing.

Keep documenting your journey. Let people see the mistakes, the lessons, the calculations and the progress. That will make Investment4Business much more relatable than simply posting investment rates.

You may be a car wash operator today, but you're building something bigger: financial knowledge, investment discipline and an audience that can learn from your journey.

Keep going, brother. Just make accuracy your number-one rule whenever money is involved. 💪🏽📈
Distribusiness:
Good evening Nairalanders,

My name is Oluwamuyiwa Olusanya, a car wash operator at Dugbe, Ibadan since May 4, 2025. I write an Investment4Business blog.

I want to share a real comparison I did for Fixed Deposit vs Mutual Funds Money Market Fund in 2026, because many people are confused.

I tested with ₦100,000 for 90 days:

A. FIXED DEPOSIT:
- Rate in September 2026: 10-13% for ₦100k (Access Bank 11%, First Bank 10.5%, Stanbic 12% if you have ₦1m+)
- Interest formula: Principal x Rate x Days / 365
- ₦100,000 x 11% x 90 / 365 = ₦2,712 gross
- Withholding Tax 10% = ₦271.2
- Net you receive = ₦2,440.8
- Lock: 90 days, if you break before, you lose interest.

B. MUTUAL FUNDS (Money Market Fund):
- Rate in September 2026: Stanbic IBTC Money Market 15.2%, Cowrywise Money Market 15%, PiggyVest Flex Dollar
- Interest: Compounding daily, not simple
- ₦100,000 x 15% x 90 / 365 = ₦3,698 (approximate, daily compounding adds small extra)
- No 10% WHT deducted upfront, fund pays after
- Liquidity: Withdraw within 24-48 hours, no penalty
- Risk: Not insured by NDIC like Fixed Deposit, but invested in Treasury Bills and Commercial Papers

My Result:
Mutual Funds paid ₦1,257 more than Fixed Deposit for the same ₦100k for 90 days.
When to choose which?
- Choose Fixed Deposit if you want NDIC insurance up to ₦500k and you will not touch money.
- Choose Mutual Funds if you want higher return and flexibility to withdraw for emergencies.

I am not selling anything. Just sharing what I learned saving ₦10k monthly with ₦334 daily from car wash.

What do you use? Fixed or Mutual Funds?

Thank you.

Interest rates aside, mutual fund is the best investment platform, in my opinion. The catch however, is that you have to invest a substantial amount of money to enjoy its benefits. For instance, with a savings of about 10 million naira, you are assured of a monthly returns of 150-170k (sometimes even more). Smart people build up their investments to a substantial level and live off the monthly returns. Personally, my monthly income all goes to my mutual account and I live by the returns. It literally feels like eating your cake and having it.

Need I also add that for treasury bills, the government takes a certain percentage of your total investment unlike mutual funds (not totally sure though). As of today, stanbic is the best platform to invest in.

Nope, you have your regular funds but your savings you put in fx deposit. Eg you have 1b, it gives you 160-200m yearly doing nothing. No county in the world pays such returns, infact my guys abroad bring their money to fx here in naija. In Uk, US I doubt you can get 3%.
Naija de pay 10-20%.
