The House of Representatives has extended the implementation of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act for the fourth time, moving the deadline from September 30 to December 31, 2026.

The extension was approved during Tuesday’s plenary following a motion moved by the House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere.

The latest extension means the implementation period of the 2025 capital budget, originally due to expire on December 31, 2025, has now been carried over for another full year.

The National Assembly first extended the implementation period in December 2025, moving the deadline to March 31, 2026. Lawmakers subsequently extended it to June 30 and later to September 30.

The House had, in June, approved the extension from June 30 to September 30, with lawmakers saying several capital projects under the 2025 budget were yet to be completed.

The Senate had earlier approved the same extension.

The June extension was the third adjustment to the lifespan of the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act.

With Tuesday’s decision, Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government will have an additional three months to implement projects and utilise funds appropriated under the 2025 capital budget.

The repeated extensions have allowed the implementation of the 2025 capital budget to continue alongside the 2026 budget.

In December 2025, when the National Assembly extended the 2025 budget to March 31, 2026, President Bola Tinubu had said the move would facilitate the full release of capital implementation funds to MDAs.

When the deadline was subsequently extended to June 30, the Presidency said the extension was intended to ensure the completion of critical infrastructure and development projects that were at advanced stages of implementation.

In June, lawmakers again extended the deadline to September 30, saying ongoing projects had not been fully implemented and that additional time was needed to prevent project abandonment and fulfil outstanding obligations.

Today’s extension therefore represents the fourth time the National Assembly has altered the implementation deadline of the capital component of the 2025 budget.
