Flydubai Flight FZ1073: Passengers Help Subdue Co-Pilot After Alleged Attempt to Crash Israel-Bound Jet

Israel-bound Flydubai Flight FZ1073 made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a violent confrontation inside the cockpit sent the Boeing 737 into a dramatic descent and triggered emergency signals associated with unlawful interference. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the co-pilot stabbed the captain and apparently attempted to crash the aircraft before passengers and crew intervened. The airline has confirmed a cockpit “altercation” but says the motive remains under investigation.

A Flydubai passenger jet travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency landing in northwestern Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, September 30, after what Israeli authorities say was an extraordinary midair attack in which the aircraft's co-pilot stabbed the captain and apparently attempted to bring down the plane.

Passengers and crew members subsequently intervened, entered the cockpit and subdued the alleged attacker, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and accounts from passengers.

Other pilots or qualified crew members then helped regain control of the aircraft and bring it safely to the ground at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk.

All passengers were reported safe and accounted for.

Saudi airport authorities said both the captain and first officer were taken to hospital after the landing. Netanyahu said the alleged attacker had been detained by Saudi authorities.

Reuters

The extraordinary episode initially raised fears in Israel that an aircraft carrying a large number of Israeli nationals was being hijacked.

Israeli fighter jets were scrambled as the aircraft transmitted an internationally recognised code for unlawful interference.

But the emerging picture is more complicated than a conventional hijacking.

Israeli officials now say they believe the incident involved an attempt by one member of the flight crew to deliberately crash the aircraft.

Flydubai, however, has so far confirmed only that an “altercation” occurred on the flight deck and has not publicly endorsed claims about terrorism, suicide or the alleged attacker's motive.

The airline has said the circumstances are subject to a formal investigation.

WHAT HAPPENED TO FLIGHT FZ1073?

Flight FZ1073 departed Dubai International Airport at approximately 03:05 UTC — 7:05 a.m. in Dubai — bound for Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv.

The aircraft was a Boeing 737 MAX 8, according to flight-tracking data cited by several reports.

It initially climbed normally to a cruising altitude of approximately 34,000 feet.

More than two hours into the flight, however, the aircraft's behaviour changed dramatically.

Flightradar24 data show that at around 05:21 UTC, FZ1073 began a very steep descent.

The aircraft then climbed sharply before descending again and eventually stabilising at approximately 15,000 feet.

Its altitude and ground speed continued fluctuating as the emergency unfolded.

Flightradar24 flight reconstruction

Different reports calculated the magnitude of the descent somewhat differently because they examined different portions of the flight data.

Reuters reported that the aircraft appeared to plunge nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before its first emergency signal was transmitted.

The Guardian described a fall of about 16,000 feet in roughly two minutes, while other reconstructions based on Flightradar24 data put the larger altitude loss at approximately 16,000 to 17,000 feet.

What is not in dispute is that the aircraft underwent an extremely rapid and abnormal series of altitude changes during the cockpit incident.

THE AIRCRAFT TRANSMITTED THREE CRUCIAL EMERGENCY SIGNALS

At 05:28:48 UTC, according to Flightradar24, the aircraft began transmitting transponder code 7700.

Code 7700 is the internationally recognised signal for a general emergency.

Then, at approximately 05:35 UTC, the aircraft switched to 7500.

Code 7500 indicates unlawful interference with an aircraft and is widely associated with a hijacking or attempted hijacking.

That signal immediately elevated the situation from an aviation emergency into a potential security crisis.

The aircraft turned west, briefly entered Jordanian airspace and then reversed course before heading southwest towards Saudi Arabia.

As it approached Tabuk, FZ1073 switched back to the general-emergency code, 7700.

7700 — GENERAL EMERGENCY

7500 — UNLAWFUL INTERFERENCE

7700 — GENERAL EMERGENCY

The fact that code 7500 was transmitted explains why initial reports widely described the incident as a possible hijacking.

But transmitting the code establishes that unlawful interference was being reported from the aircraft; it does not, by itself, establish exactly what was happening inside the cockpit.

WHAT ALLEGEDLY HAPPENED INSIDE THE COCKPIT?

According to the account later given by Netanyahu, the aircraft's co-pilot attacked and stabbed the captain and then apparently attempted to crash the aircraft.

Reuters reported that an Israeli official identified the alleged attacker as an Omani national.

Reporting attributed to CNN similarly cited Israeli officials as saying that the Omani crew member was the co-pilot and was believed to have attacked the other pilot.

Netanyahu said a passenger and a member of the crew managed to force their way into the cockpit while the aircraft was diving.

According to the Israeli prime minister's account, they found the alleged attacker attempting to interfere with the aircraft's systems and succeeded in overpowering him.

Other pilots then helped fly and land the aircraft, Reuters reported.

Passengers gave broadly similar accounts of screams, violence near the front of the aircraft and a sudden loss of control.

Passenger Miryam Shira Ohayon said the plane was “pretty much out of control” as the confrontation unfolded.

She alleged that the co-pilot had attempted to kill the captain and carry out what she described as a suicide attack.

Her description represents a passenger's account, rather than a finding by investigators.

Other passengers described hearing cries for help from the cockpit before people rushed forward.

Yasmin Abukasis, whose daughter was aboard the aircraft, told reporters that her daughter heard someone screaming for assistance as the plane began losing control.

She said passengers feared they were about to die before people on board managed to intervene.

Videos circulating after the incident showed bloodied people aboard the aircraft and passengers apparently assisting injured individuals.

The Associated Press said it reviewed video showing two wounded men on the floor while others administered medical treatment and guarded the cockpit.

PASSENGERS AND CREW APPEAR TO HAVE PLAYED A DECISIVE ROLE

One of the most remarkable elements of the accounts emerging from the flight is the direct intervention by people aboard the aircraft.

Netanyahu said a passenger and crew member broke into the cockpit as the aircraft was diving.

After the alleged attacker was subdued, other crew members or pilots aboard the aircraft took control, according to several reports.

Netanyahu credited those who intervened with preventing a catastrophe, saying their actions had saved numerous lives.

Flydubai has been more cautious in its description.

A company spokesperson told The Independent that an “altercation occurred in the flight deck” and that the aircraft was subsequently “secured by on-duty Flydubai crew.”

The airline said everyone aboard was safe and accounted for and stressed that the motivation behind the incident remained unknown pending a formal investigation.

That distinction is important: while passenger testimony and Israeli government accounts describe a deliberate attack, Flydubai has not yet publicly confirmed the alleged attacker's intentions.

EMERGENCY LANDING IN TABUK

Saudi authorities say air traffic controllers received a distress request from Flight FZ1073 at approximately 8:44 a.m. Saudi time.

The aircraft landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk at approximately 9:45 a.m. local time.

Both the captain and first officer were taken to hospital, Saudi airport authorities said.

Passengers were assisted by Saudi authorities at the airport while arrangements were made for their onward journey.

Flydubai confirmed the safe landing, saying the aircraft had landed safely in Tabuk and that all passengers were safe and accounted for.

The company said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities and would issue further information as facts were confirmed.

Netanyahu separately said Saudi authorities had detained the alleged attacker and would question him.

More details, including the hijacking question, terrorism claims, identity of the alleged attacker, passenger aftermath and what remains unconfirmed, continued in the first reply below.

CONTINUED: FLYDUBAI FLIGHT FZ1073 INCIDENT

ISRAELI FIGHTER JETS SCRAMBLED AMID HIJACKING FEARS

The 7500 transponder code and the aircraft's unusual movements triggered an immediate security response in Israel.

Israeli fighter jets were scrambled because officials feared an aircraft carrying a large number of Israeli passengers could have been hijacked.

The flight had been travelling towards Israel before it turned away and diverted to Saudi Arabia.

Reports differed on the precise number of people aboard.

Contemporary accounts placed the passenger total at roughly 150 to 180, with Israeli officials saying the overwhelming majority were Israeli nationals.

Because neither the airline nor the initial Saudi statement published a definitive passenger manifest, the precise number should be treated cautiously.

WAS IT A HIJACKING?

Not necessarily — and this is one of the areas where early reporting became confusing.

The aircraft unquestionably transmitted 7500, the international code for unlawful interference, which immediately raised the possibility of hijacking.

Some passengers themselves also initially described what was happening as a hijacking.

But an Israeli prime minister's office spokesperson later told Reuters that authorities did not believe the incident was a conventional hijacking, describing it instead as a different type of security event.

The distinction appears to be that investigators suspect a crew member may have been attempting to deliberately crash the aircraft rather than seize it and redirect it as part of a traditional hijacking.

That conclusion remains provisional.

WAS IT A TERRORIST ATTACK?

Israeli officials have increasingly characterised the incident as a suspected terrorist attack.

Netanyahu described it as a highly serious security incident, while Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz publicly called it an attempted terrorist attack.

Reuters reported that Israeli officials said their current assessment was that the episode represented an attempted terror attack rather than a mental-health-related incident involving the pilots.

That assessment should not yet be confused with an established investigative finding.

Flydubai has explicitly said that the motive remains unknown and is subject to formal investigation.

Saudi authorities had also not, in the initial reporting reviewed for this article, publicly confirmed a terrorist motive or announced evidence establishing an ideological affiliation for the alleged attacker.

No publicly disclosed evidence had yet established whether the suspected attack was independently planned, connected to an organisation, ideologically motivated, personally motivated or driven by some other factor.

For that reason, descriptions such as “terrorist attack” currently represent the assessment of Israeli officials, rather than a final investigative conclusion.

CONFUSION OVER WHICH PILOT ATTACKED WHOM

Early reports were also inconsistent about the roles of the two pilots.

Some headlines from The Guardian and The Independent initially described a pilot attacking or stabbing the co-pilot.

Later and more specific reporting from Reuters identified the alleged attacker as the co-pilot, while Israeli officials cited by CNN reportedly gave the same account.

Israel Hayom also reported the alleged assailant as the Omani co-pilot.

Passenger testimony reported by several outlets similarly described the co-pilot as the alleged attacker.

Given those discrepancies, the most defensible formulation at this stage is that:

Israeli authorities say the Omani co-pilot attacked the captain, while the precise sequence of events remains under investigation.

THE ALLEGED ATTACKER

Israeli officials cited by Reuters identified the suspected attacker as an Omani national.

CNN also reported, citing two Israeli officials, that an Omani national was serving as co-pilot and that preliminary information identified him as the person who attacked the other pilot.

Oman and Israel do not maintain formal diplomatic relations, a fact that generated additional questions in Israeli reporting about the circumstances under which the pilot was operating a Tel Aviv-bound service.

However, nationality alone does not establish a motive, and there was no publicly verified evidence in the initial reports demonstrating that the alleged attack was motivated by the co-pilot's nationality, religion or political views.

Israel Hayom published additional reporting focused on the Omani co-pilot, but some personal and biographical details circulating in Israeli and social-media reports remained unconfirmed by Flydubai or Saudi investigators at the time of writing.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PASSENGERS AFTER LANDING?

The emergency landing created an unusual diplomatic situation because Saudi Arabia and Israel do not maintain formal diplomatic relations.

Reuters subsequently reported that Saudi Arabia declined an Israeli request to allow Israeli military aircraft to enter the kingdom to collect the stranded passengers.

Two security sources told Reuters that Israel had been preparing military transport aircraft for the evacuation.

Instead, the passengers were expected to continue their journey aboard Flydubai aircraft.

Despite the absence of formal Saudi-Israeli diplomatic relations, this was not the first time an aircraft carrying Israelis had made an emergency landing in the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia opened its airspace more broadly to Israeli-linked flights in 2022, and Saudi authorities have previously assisted passengers aboard Israel-bound aircraft forced to land because of emergencies.

A SECOND FLYDUBAI FLIGHT CAUSED TEMPORARY CONFUSION

Another Flydubai service travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv later attracted attention when flight-tracking information initially appeared to show it changing course.

The Guardian reported that Flight FZ1081 initially appeared to be diverting back towards the United Arab Emirates.

Updated tracking information later showed the aircraft continuing towards Israel, where it landed safely.

There was no confirmed indication that the second aircraft had experienced an incident comparable to FZ1073.

WHAT IS CONFIRMED — AND WHAT REMAINS UNPROVEN?

Several facts can now be established with relatively high confidence.

CONFIRMED OR STRONGLY CORROBORATED:

Flight FZ1073 departed Dubai for Tel Aviv.

The aircraft underwent violent and highly abnormal altitude changes.

It transmitted both general-emergency and unlawful-interference codes.

It diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

A serious physical confrontation occurred inside the cockpit.

Both pilots were injured and taken to hospital.

People aboard the aircraft intervened.

The aircraft ultimately landed safely.

All passengers were reported accounted for.

Israeli authorities say the co-pilot stabbed the captain and attempted to crash the aircraft.

Israeli officials identify the alleged attacker as an Omani national.

WHAT REMAINS UNRESOLVED:

Investigators have not yet publicly established the alleged attacker's motive.

It has not been independently established whether the incident was terrorism, an attempted suicide attack, another form of deliberate interference or something else.

The precise sequence of the cockpit struggle — including exactly when the stabbing occurred, who controlled the aircraft during each stage of its descent and how control was ultimately restored — has not yet been formally reconstructed.

Nor has a complete investigative account been released by Saudi aviation authorities or Flydubai.

The aircraft's cockpit voice recorder, flight data recorder, crew interviews, passenger testimony, medical findings and security investigation will likely be central to establishing what actually happened.

Until those investigations are completed, some of the most dramatic claims surrounding Flight FZ1073 remain allegations rather than settled fact.

What is already clear, however, is that the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv flight experienced an exceptionally serious in-flight security emergency, underwent a dangerous loss of altitude, and reached the ground safely only after an extraordinary intervention aboard the aircraft.
