This guy is no Yoruba oooo. So it's true what people are saying. I even have many Igbo friends that speak Yoruba better than this guy and he has been around for politics for the past 4 years. Even Igbos that came to Lagos in 2 years now speak better Yoruba.

E ma je ki a fi ete sile ka ma pa lapalapa.
That's the proverb he was struggling to say which could have helped him in this scenario.
I love his defence tho, he's a smart man but that doesn't mean he won't come far behind APC Hazmat.

You dispelled question about culture, yet concluded that culture has to be preserved. Where do they get these folks from?

The family of that guy is more Yoruba than your family

Understand this...

I might not support him but these are the real and true owners of Lagos

You can take that to the bank

He cannot converse in Yoruba so what? As long as he has Yoruba heritage, he is good to go ( not that other non Yoruba persons cannot govern Lagos) The most important factor is governance. Lagos is situated in Yoruba land but it is cosmopolitan in nature. No be only Yoruba dey live and contribute to the economy of Lagos.

Just imagine the guts. You want to govern a state you can't even speak the local language fluently

Gbadebo should go and govern where he can speak their local language. The unfortunate part for him is, the 2023 Obi's wave is no longer there

This is arrogant talk. In your home state, would you vote for someone who can't speak the local language fluently? If the market women have issue, how will he communicate with them, with interpreters or what?

I would vote for a competent individual who would give me good governance. Tribe is the last thing on my mind, because that is exactly how nepotism starts. Good governance and nepotism ( or tribal favouritism) are two parallel lines.

Dude doesn’t have a Yoruba heritage. Don’t play. His family were returning slaves who ain’t Yoruba..

Not all the slaves that returned to Lagos back then were of Yoruba heritage. Some of them were not even Nigerians but all of them stayed & decided to be with us cuz they were welcomed thoroughly with love!

The Chinedu himself said he doesn’t think in Yoruba. He said it himself. He already spoke the truth. Why do you people always ignore this part?

See, I really don’t have a problem with the dude but there’s no need of lieing about his heritage. If Igbo people can be holding elective and government positions here, they can also become governor… It would have been very good for him, if he had just simply market himself as a breed mixture of Yor/Igbo. It would made more sense. Which one be… I don’t think in Yoruba?

Forget all these political gbas-gbos. Anybody that has something to offer can rule anywhere in Yoruba land… I intentionally used *Anybody* & not *Any Nigerians* cuz, e get some people for SW politics that are not even Nigerian and they’re doing well..

So in which political position have Gbadebo ever been competent to have shown your assertion above?

You deliberately ignored the market woman part..As a governor of a state who can't speak the local language, how would he be able to communicate with the locals who can't speak or understand English

If not mental illness how can he want to govern a Yoruba state without knowing how to speak the language of the people he wants to govern.
Mumu say ke pa labalaba, labalaba ko, tata ni.
He has a whole 4 years to learn Yoruba, one of the most simple languages to understand in Nigeria but he is not serious with his life.
He can speak Igbo he should go and be governor in Anambra.

This one will not make frontpage because it's demeaning to some people. GRV is really not ready yet for this opposition thing.

By now GRV should have assimilated
It has been 170 years since his great Grandfather William Vivour settled in Lagos.
His Grandmother was from the Rhodes Family and those ones were Oyo stock

Sule the Suya seller at Agege who only arrived 2 years ago from Kano is already fluent in Yoruba

See what a supposed youth that should be asking for better governance and demand accountability from the politicians is fixated upon.

Well, he’s likely from a certain party.

his family is not the one campaigning to be governor , it is him we are dealing with so if he didn't understand the culture and language,he should simply step aside.

Many of them abound here on nairaland, packaging themselves as Yoruba (even writing Yoruba to deceive the gullible) but they always give themselves out because their thought process doesn’t align with that of an Omoluabi

The moderator saved him by asking him to speak in English, but he wanted to prove something he couldn't.

Gbadebo is an ajebutter. Lagos governors are ajekpakos, some of whom rose to the top through hardwork.

Hamzat, despite being from an aristocratic family, went to school in Mushin before going to UI and Cranfield. He humbled himself before Sanwo-Olu who was not that well known compared to Hamzat. He has a glorious work history in Citibank, Merill Lynch, Oando, and Morgan Stanley and speaks excellent Yoruba. That is who Gbadebo is competing against. Gbadebo was asked to list his projects, he referred people to his website.

He doesn't know who the real owners of Lagos are, he thinks it's these non lagosians from Osun and Ogun and even Ondo that are claiming lagosians that are the real lagosians. Ignorance is truly the bane of humanity

He goofed. Although the proverb he was trying to use was spot on but he struggled to speak the language

E maa fi ete sile ke ma pa lapalapa ( don't leave leprosy and focus on skin rash)

In other words there are bigger issues than speaking language.

His point about designating Yoruba as vernacular was spot on. If you de-market the language in schools why are you now pretending that speaking it in public is what will preserve the culture...isn't the culture preserved by the next generation? to whom you spend twelve years telling them the language is vernacular and punish them in schools for speaking it.
