I was forced to shake my head while going through the proposed annual salaries. The average annual pay is around 3.5million. That's less than 300k per month. WTF?? 🤥 A bus or truck driver can earn far more than this in a month. Our professors deserve better salary than this meager pay na.

The salaries are real. Two of my classmates are lecturers and have done their doctorates.

They make their money in some ways though but can never be compared to professionals with same years of experience.

Nigeria has reduced the teaching profession to a beggarly job that one engaged in it only just manages to survive with the pay they get!

No wonder lectures sort and engage in other ungodly activities, because their take home pay is just rubbish.

That is where selling of textbooks comes in.

times 5000 kehhuh Except courses like SER 001 also known as General Studies in some schools. Most departments per level are around 100 except English, Microbiology and Accounting.

The pay may be good during the pre-APC era but it's definitely not now. Apart from the dignity, class and reliability that come with lecturing jobs, I never for once envy the pay.

Generally, academia is not a place to earn a lot of money, even in the long term. I knew how much assistant professors at my Japanese alma mater received per annum. A new graduate from the same university who works for a semiconductor or finance firm will earn more than assistant professors and professors in the near future. Mind you, to become an assistant professor requires a PhD from a good school, publications in top journals and a postdoc stint.

When this assistant professor moved to a private chemical company, his pay doubled. Academia offers job security (in the US, once on tenure, you hardly get sacked or removed), time to work on projects you really love without undue external pressures. Although, this is facing problems with the "publish or perish culture).

As I've mentioned in a different thread, if you want to earn good money in academia (STEM related):
- Discover a drug or invent something new. The head of the department worked with a big Japanese chemical company to commercialise his research findings. Na so him take dey fund his lifestyle (owns two BMWs).. George Church of Harvard/MIT is another prolific researcher cum entrepreneur.

For business/social sciences:
- Provide consultancy services to businesses, governments and organisations. This also applies to those in the agric space, whether professors of soil or animal science

For humanities:
- Write books to sell
- Public speaking. Charge people/organisations to speak at their events.
- Develop workplace theories to implement them in the corporate environment.

In all, sell something (product, time or service). That's the only way to make good money.

Don't get a PhD then enter academia because you want to make money o

Good write up there. I knew this since, I have seen and compared the lives of most academia, they're respected and revered but no much money! I love the academia but i want money hence I chose a different path. I am happy I did.

Good write up, chief. Succintently put as it should be.

I'm pursuing a PhD because of the love of books and because of Nigerian lecturers. I need professionals to come into academia because the current crop of lecturers are something else, behaving like demi-gods.

Yes, the passion shouldn't be money, but a burning desire to impact people through education, research on a subject, etc. Your reply reminded me of a Financial Times article where a PhD researcher or student at a top London uni, abi one of the Oxbridge, lamented how financially tedious it was to pursue a PhD as someone from a less well-off family. His colleagues, according to him, are from well-off families. So, they are mentally and materially prepared and comfortable to embark on the journey. PhD > postdoc > assistant professor. I think another benefit they get (those in academia) is the assurance that their children can easily gain admission to the institutions they teach at. This is widespread across countries. Sure, the children by nuture would be mentally qualified, but there is that aspect of networking, aka man know man, for children of professors/lecturers and the layman outside the system.
