| Came To The UK For A Master's Degree But I Regret Coming. Thinking Of Returning. by Lannister247(op): 8:43am On Oct 14 |
Good morning, everyone. Please, I need honest advice from Nigerians who have experienced life in the UK, especially Nigerians who have returned home after relocating abroad. Please as a Nigerian if you have not visited the UK or lived in the west before then stay away, you'll never understand the challenges abroad thus youll start making silly comments like: "Na villiage people de call you" or "anywhere is better than nigeria" or start throwing insult on something you know nothing about. Continuing.. I knew abroad was hard, i watched people's story on youtube but i never expected it to be this terrible. I am a Nigerian currently in the UK studying for a master's degree. Honestly, I am struggling badly with life here, and I have been regretting since i came here. Before coming to the UK, I had my own challenges in Nigeria, but I was far happier, i had peace i took for granted. Since arriving here, I have been feeling stressed, worried and trapped. I don't enjoy anything about this place, and I find myself regretting my decision almost every day. Sometimes people even notice the worry on my face and ask me if I am okay, THE STRESS IS OVERWHELMING. One of the things weighing heavily on me is the routine I have ahead of me for the next year. I either have to go to school or be working. I don't have even one day of rest in a week not even Sunday. This is what my life is going to look like for the next year, and honestly, I don't know how I will cope with it. The thought of living like this is overwhelming, should i even call that living? Another thing that worries me is the future. I see people talking about five year and ten year plans to gather enough funds and return back home, but I don't even know how I can stay here for another month. I have met Nigerians who have lived here for many years, some 5, 10 years and they have nothing, even the ones who manage to build one small house in Nigeria built it with their life(not money) working like a sl@ve 7 days a week toiling and jeopadising your health just to build a house, is it worth it? Seeing this has made me question what exactly I am walking into and wether its better to exit early when i still have my youth, i mean the kind energy people put here if they put it back in Nigeria they must succeed. People are not happy here they are simply enduring everything because they have already invested so much in coming and is ashamed to go back. If I return to Nigeria now, I will have to start figuring things out again. My biggest fear is not just the financial side of returning. It is also what people will say. Some Nigerians may laugh at me for returning after such a short time, especially when so many people are desperate to relocate abroad. I don't want to make a decision based on people's opinions, but I would be lying if I said their judgment does not bother me. At the same time, I don't want to spend the next 5-10 years being miserable, missing out on life, toiling, waking up by 4am and getting home by 8pm simply because I am afraid of what people will say. If i ever get the courage to go back to Nigeria ill never leave that place, you'll never value that Country until you've left. I am just confuse at the moment.

That aside, think about it. If you come back to Nigeria, won't you work? You'll have to work too and it's almost the same pattern, except that your 24/7 will be spent among friends and family here in Nigeria where you'll be giving each other support and hope that everything will be fine one day. |

Did you build a house, within that time frame? I believe that should give you a better perspective of the financial situation working in Nigeria gives you compared to the other country. Stay there, study and work. Face the hurdles and win. I am coming to meet you too. |

I can imagine the loneliness and routine. It can be overwhelming. But for a poor Nigerian without connections and rich relatives to help you, finding yourself abroad with OP’s conditions and wishing to return to Nigeria is insane. OP must have grown up in some comfort so I understand his predicament. |

This is what my life is going to look like for the next year, and honestly, I don't know how I will cope with it.Basically, you are lazy and can not cope with having to sweat from your brow to get what you want because you lack resilience. It's not like it is for you for those who are willing to sacrifice in the initial stage so they can reap tomorrow. One advise I'd like taken by anyone who wants to japa is visit or a least read heavily about where you going before you relocate to prepare yourself to cope, but I'm aware some can't afford to. |

I Lannister247:I’m living abroad, just like you, and I haven’t regretted my decision for a moment. Honestly, I think you may need to reconsider your circle of people you surround yourself with. From what you’ve shared, it seems you might be going through a challenging phase, and sometimes, the people around us can significantly influence our mindset, opportunities, and growth. One of the best places to connect with people who are progressing in their careers and personal lives is within a good church community. Beyond spiritual growth, you can find people who have walked the path you’re on, learn from their experiences, and potentially find someone willing to mentor you. Personally, I secured a six-figure professional job while I was still on a student visa. I share this not to boast, but to let you know that it is possible to achieve great things even when your circumstances seem limiting. Sometimes, all it takes is the right environment, the right connections, a willingness to learn, and the courage to pursue opportunities. Don’t limit what you believe is possible for yourself. Find the right community, seek mentorship, keep improving yourself, and remain open to opportunities. Your current circumstances do not have to define your future. All the best to you. |

Lannister247:I understand you brother, maybe not 100% but I also live abroad and I know what you're talking about. Your current routine (even as planned for next year) won't last forever and if it's something you can endure, please endure, it won't last forever. Life isn't just about having fun and living a balanced life, sometimes it will require more from you and that's when you either move on or go back. Also, on the flip side, many have died in the UK while trying to take on tasks bigger than them, so you can evaluate yourself and make a good decision, prayerfully. If you grind for 1 year so that the rest of your life will become easier, it's worth it. All the same, the ball is in your court and Nigeria is always an option. |

Lannister247:If you don’t have visa issues then you should be happy. Start making friends, learn how to travel, have a stable job, work 48 hours a week because anything more than that is not good for your health and your task code as well , associat/identify with your ethnic group meeting in diaspora, visit the gym 4 times in a week, don’t forget to take your daily vitamin D too. Nigeria is on fire now, don’t dare to return because you wl realise that life was better than how it’s today before you travelled.: Tinubu government is a disaster. You will cry if you return unless if you are from a very wealthy family.. |

Only JJC’s or people who have never been to an airport applaud the western life. It’s certain that at some point, you will get tired of running and start asking yourself, where am I running to. The system will keep you on toes till you hit the grave, and even in death, your burial will not come cheap. |

In the end, you will see that you came to this world alone...and when it is time to go, people's opinions won't matter. Do what works for you, and only what works for you! God did not put you in Nigeria only for the sole purpose of japaing. If the main aim of coming to this world is to japa to any country, He would have made sure you were born in that country. I understand you perfectly. Save small money, and relocate to a State where no one knows you if you still care about people's opinions.

Just develop one mindset.... "When you get to the bridge, you will see or learn how to cross it" It's not easy to develop but it will help you relax and prepare for the storm ahead... It's not easy anywhere, but once you adapt, you'll even laugh at your present feelings in future when you look back.. When you were in primary school in Nigeria, could you attempt a senior college test questions ? ....NO , But when you got to that stage of life, it became your new reality.... Tell yourself, it's your turn to experience this and you'll cross that bridge.... What you're experiencing is what all immigrants experienced.... except you arrived as a citizen that's the only way it'll be easier for you... |

Bro, i perfectly understand your predicament, having lived in the UK for 5 years. it is highly frustrating with heavy bills, school fees, lonely life and the need to work hard (6-7days a week) to meet up those inevitable high bills . Alo, the fear of the uncertain future with the unstable immigration policies. All These would come with new health challenges especially if you are close to 40 years. But, if you endure the study period and live within your means. Do not compare yourself with anyone. avoid credit purchase as much as you could. You will get your feet after studies. keep few cirlce for trusted friends, you check on each other and spend few times with them. it's really a lonely world here. If you live in London or other expensive cities, you could relocate to more affordable cities. Best of luck brother! |
