I Visited Port Harcourt Zoo Myself — And I Was Disappointed

After seeing several reports and videos about the state of Port Harcourt Zoo, I decided to visit myself. I wanted to know if people were simply giving the zoo bad PR or deliberately downplaying it.

Unfortunately, what I saw was even more disappointing. A place that was once regarded as one of Nigeria’s notable zoos now looks almost abandoned, with only a handful of animals left.

The government really needs to step up and revive Port Harcourt Zoo. Its current state does not speak well of Rivers State.

I documented my visit here:

The government of Rivers state needs to take that zoo seriously.

The main question is - Are visitors ready to pay more for tickets into the zoo?

No zoo in Nigeria can survive by charging just 500Naira undecided

THEN THEY SHOULD SHUT IT DOWN AND RELEASE THE ANIMALS INTO THE WILD. NO ZOO THRIVES ON CUSTOMER DRIVE. MOST ARE ADJUVANTS TO RESEARCH CENTRES OR KEPT ALIVE BY GRANTS OR PHILANTHROPIC DONATIONS.

Why do people come to type ignorant comments at times?
How much food has the government given to children and parents since they've abandoned the zoo for long.

Everywhere around the world no one pays fair price for zoos, it is highly subsidized. Even here I have been to private zoo and it was free. The family funds it through donation.

For Nigerian government owned zoos you know that money that our politicians use in buying houses for their side chics abroad plus 500 naira gate fee plus a drive for private and individual donations (it is the duty of the zoo management to drive that) will sustain a zoo.

Enugu government sold the land where the zoo used to be and it haa been converted to drinking joints. What a joke of a country
