Gingerly:
After watching your video I must tell you that the joke is on you.

That truck passed a small bus with much difficulty.
If it was a bigger vehicle that broke down, that truck couldn't have passed.
Or, damage/accident happening if both are in motion and one tries to overtake the other. Imagine the holdup if a truck should breakdown on this bridge! I hate it when people ignorantly create new problem when trying to solve one

The coming festive period will determine if this is a good idea or not.

Also, was a proper feasibility study done or was it done on a wimp?

There was never traffic problem on the bridge but now, it will start. There is actually no need for the median.
No, there would have been no need but Nigerian drivers are highly irresponsible. When there were repairs being done on one of the bridges along the Uke axis of the Abuja-Keffi road, drivers had to use one lane getting to the army checkpoint. Yet a certain fool decided he could not stay on his own lane and was attempting to overtake a long stretch of vehicles, thereby stalling traffic on the oncoming line on the single lane that was open. He was even being supported by some drivers.

When people decide to behave like animals, they deserve to be treated like animals.

Some Nigerians truly deserve what they get. I'm wondering is this even worthy of an infrastructure? . To be arguing and proving if a truck will dash by stopped vehicle on the bridge. I'm wondering also, why anyone should be celebrating this? Are we that starved of standard necessities?

We celebrate mediocrities here in this part of the world.

Check infrastructures built not even in European countries, but in Africa. Check and see bridges

Do you know when that bridge was built?
Some of you just talk anyhow.
Are you not aware that there is a second Niger bridge?
Should this bridge be abandoned because of the new bridge?

There are roads in Europe that are way narrower than this bridge.
Must you complain about everything? Even a good thing.
Is your heart that bitter?

Go and tell those who travel via that bridge that this is not a good development.

This makes no sense, we've all passed through the bridge and all been held up for hours due to traffic. TBH, most of the time, the congestions are due to police stopping cars to drag them for money and people driving one way, but traffic na traffic.
Secondly, I don't understand the essence of the op's post, did you not see the distance between the truck and the bus? Do you believe the truck would have been able to pass, or vice versa, if both were in motion? What is your aim exactly in making this post?
the post is meaningless actually. Now imagine it's a truck that broke down there.

[quote author=Image123 post=140940288]Why are you breaking down on a 1.4km road? What happened to road worthiness before a trip? Many Nigerians cannot survive a truly working country.

Let's focus on the bridge for now because even brand new vehicles break down too.
Don't derail this INTERESTING thread!!.

Is this the way trucks pass buses on third mainland bridge or any other bridge in Nigeria?.

Some people also claimed that the barriers were too heavy for the bridge. They made this claim without knowing the weight of the barriers and the load bearing capacity of the bridge.

In actual fact the barriers were placed there to solve that problem.

Quite often vehicles drive against the flow of traffic, thereby blocking vehicles coming in the opposite direction. This causes traffic jams and increases static load on the bridge. All those cars that are stopped in traffic on the bridge are heavier than the barriers that were placed there.

The new system eliminates this problem. The lanes have been properly demarcated, there is space to go past any broken down vehicle and there are junctions so that vehicles can make U-turns and the bridge can be decongested.

However some people are also advocating that large trucks should be banned from the Niger Bridge and made to use the Second Niger Bridge instead.

Speech by the Honourable Minister of Works, Engineer David Umahi, at the reopening of the Niger Bridge after rehabilitation works

The representative of the governor of Delta, my brother Charles who is commissioner of rural roads and public infrastructure and my friend the representative of the governor of Anambra state, the honourable commissioner for works. The leader. . . deputy chief of the 10th Senate, Barrister Onyekachi Nwaebonyi. Your majesty the Asagba of Asaba, your majesty thank you very much. Thank you. Your majesty the Igurube 1. I'm told. . . They have given me your resume and I think that the two of you are so powerful that I want to be a friend to two of you. Thank you very much, your majesty who is in charge of this side of Anambra State. The SSAs to Mr. President South-South, South-East. The director of bridges and design, the content creator that alerted us on the dangers of this bridge. Let me stand on protocol and please, you know, my brothers and sisters for want of time.

My gratitude goes to the president of Federal Republic of Nigeria.

You know when we had issues with the Third Mainland Bridge, we were alerted and we went there and we renovated it. We put solar light, we put asphalt, we put CCTV to oversee what is happening below the bridge and on top of the bridge and the entire Nigerians, especially Lagosians they appreciated Mr. President, they appreciated the minister of works.

When we were alerted on this bridge, we immediately came. This content creator alerted us and we immediately came. We reviewed the bridge. We reviewed the problems of the bridge. People were removing bolts. This bridge is basically built on steel frames and so removing the bolts was very dangerous, you know, the removing of the bolts and cutting the iron, they were dangerous events that would have collapsed the bridge. We also noticed that there was no maintenance since 1966.

That bridge was built and commissioned by the then prime minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Tafawa Balewa. And so we had to now re-lay the asphalt. Exactly the treatment we gave to the Third Mainland Bridge is the treatment we give to this place.

And we also did a median demarcation because bridges are not built for static loads. And so the engineers, emergency engineers began to talk. Content creators began to talk. And I think there are some people that are very mad. You talk what you do not know. You are not an engineer. Some of you didn't even go to school. You just talk. Even one lady that is an IPOB spokesperson who has turned to become an Obidient spokesperson was even talking, calling me out and talking all kinds of rubbish.

The bridge is standing and for reasons of. . . to instill discipline in the use of this bridge because if you continue to use the bridge, it is designed for 50 years and so if you continue to load this bridge by reason of static loads and indisciplined ways of driving on the bridge then the bridge is going to be endangered and when it's endangered we are all going to suffer it and that's why we put the median.

We also created some turn around, the passages, three of them so that if you have a breakdown then you'll be able to maneuver through the U-turns and that is what we have done.

We put in CCTV here, we've loaded the bridge with solar light and we are building observation center at both ends of the bridge so that the security will stay there and monitor what is happening below and under.

And let me place it on notice to the two directors of Delta and Anambra. The law given by the Federal Government is that there should be no dredging of sand 10 kilometres radius in every of our bridges. But I'm seeing dredging of sand even 20 metres away from these bridges. I am placing it on notice that I will bring disciplinary action against two of you if the dredging fails to stop.

the static load are not caused by motorists driving against traffic.

They are caused by the accursed, corrupt and incompetent police, FRSC and Immigration officers at both ends of the bridge who mount checkpoints there for extortion and blocking traffic.

Nigeria is the only country on earth where law enforcement, especially police stop random cars as a matter of routine in the pretext of stop and search when there's nothing going on, only to look for the slightest excuse to extort.

So the Nigerian government actually knows about the dangers of static load on the bridge but that's where both the corrupt FRSC and police choose to create roadblocks

The lane demarcation is not needed, however the weight. Do more research.

This further proves that the demarcation was a mistake. What if that vehicle broke down a few inches closer to the midline? The truck barely made it through at that spot.

My own take on no account no vehicle should stop anyhow or indiscriminately on a busy area like this
Re: Video Of A Large Truck Going Past A Broken Down Minibus On The Niger Bridge. by TenQ: 9:45am On Oct 18
naptu2:
The Niger Bridge was recently rehabilitated and barriers were placed on the bridge to create a median.

Some people claimed that the bridge was a two-lane road and that the median would create traffic jams. They claimed that nobody would be able to pass the bridge if a vehicle broke down on it. This is not true.

The bridge is actually a four-lane bridge and vehicles are able to go past any broken down vehicle on the bridge. This video illustrates that point.

A minibus broke down on the bridge and a large truck was able to go past it without problems.

What if a trailer broke down on this bridge, would another trailer be able to pass?

This issue has given me maximum entertainment.

⚫️ It started with me explaining the purpose of the barriers.

⚫️ Then some people came to Nairaland to lie that the barriers had been removed. Those liars were tagging me and wasting their energy by trying to insult me.

⚫️ Then I created a thread to show that the barriers were still there and that 3 junctions had been created.

And now this.

I have enjoyed it so much that I already have more threads that I will create about this issue.
