NIGERIAN ARMY BOOSTS COUNTER-TERRORISM CAPABILITY WITH ELITE SPECIAL FORCES BATTALION The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has strengthened Nigeria’s counter-terrorism and internal security capabilities with the graduation of a full-fledged Special Forces battalion at the Nigerian Army Special Forces School, Doma, Nasarawa State, on Friday, 9 October 2026. The new battalion will enhance the Nigerian Army’s capacity to conduct specialised operations, penetrate difficult terrain and dismantle terrorist and criminal networks. The COAS noted that the Army’s expansion from 8 to 12 divisions requires commensurate specialised capabilities to sustain operational readiness and extend security coverage across the country. He emphasised that the new battalion will strengthen field formations’ capacity to confront evolving threats, including the use of drones, improvised explosive devices and other emerging tactics by adversaries. The graduands completed six months of intensive training to enhance combat proficiency, resilience and adaptability. The School’s facilities include the Nigerian Army’s most difficult and complex obstacle course to date, comprising 20 obstacles, and its first-ever maze designed to help soldiers overcome fear of darkness and confined spaces while strengthening resilience and spatial orientation. Lieutenant General Shaibu charged the Special Forces personnel to uphold discipline, precision, sound judgment and respect for human rights, stressing that tactical success must not undermine public confidence. He emphasised intelligence-led operations, technological awareness and joint cooperation with sister Services and other security agencies as essential to achieving sustainable security outcomes. Earlier, the Chief of Training (Army), Major General Valentine Okoro, said the course was tailored to contemporary operational demands and lessons from ongoing operations, while the Commandant of the Nigerian Army Special Forces School, Brigadier General Umar Abubakar, highlighted the rigorous physical and tactical training undertaken by the graduands. The COAS commended the instructors and training partners for their contributions to developing a highly trained, adaptable and mission-ready force. OPERATION HADIN KAI AIR STRIKE NEUTRALISES OVER 40 ISWAP TERRORISTS, DESTROYS OPERATIONAL ASSETS IN BORNO The Air Component of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, has dealt a devastating blow to Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists, neutralising over 40 fighters, including a prominent commander, in a precision air strike on a terrorist enclave at Badu Village, south of Gudumbali in Guzamala LGA, Borno State, on 10 October 2026. The intelligence-driven operation followed credible reports of a concentration of ISWAP fighters preparing to launch coordinated attacks on troops operating within Sector 3 areas of responsibility. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the Air Component conducted targeted aerial surveillance, identified terrorist movements around suspected hideouts and logistics facilities, and subsequently executed a precision strike on a building occupied by the terrorists. Preliminary Human Intelligence, Battle Damage Assessment indicates that over 40 terrorists, including a prominent ISWAP Qaid (commander), were neutralized in the strike. The operation also destroyed two vehicles and approximately 20 motorcycles used by the terrorists for mobility, logistics and offensive operations, thereby significantly degrading their fighting capability and disrupting planned attacks on military positions and surrounding communities. Further intelligence revealed that the terrorists belonged to ISWAP's Murabitun element, a specialised mobile fighting unit responsible for conducting patrols, coordinating attacks and sustaining terrorist activities within the general area. The destruction of the enclave and associated operational assets represents a significant setback to the group's capacity to launch attacks and sustain its activities in the Lake Chad region. Further assessment is ongoing to ascertain the full extent of the damage inflicted. The successful operation underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-led, technology-enabled and coordinated air operations in dismantling terrorist networks, disrupting hostile activities and denying criminal elements freedom of action. It further demonstrates the sustained operational momentum of troops under Operation HADIN KAI in degrading terrorist capabilities and strengthening security across the North East. The Joint Task Force North East remains resolute in sustaining relentless, coordinated air and ground operations to eliminate terrorist threats, protect vulnerable communities and consolidate ongoing efforts towards restoring lasting peace and stability in the region. The terrorists, who advanced on foot from the LAR axis, launched the attack at approximately 9:07 pm in an attempt to overrun the military position. However, troops responded with superior firepower and tactical coordination, decisively repelling the assault and forcing the terrorists to retreat. Subsequent exploitation of the area led to the discovery of six terrorist corpses, confirming the neutralisation of six insurgents. Troops also recovered one PKT machine gun with three ammunition belts containing 67 rounds, six AK-47 rifles, 11 AK-47 magazines, 157 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, 120 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and one 60mm mortar bomb. Other items recovered include one Infinix Android phone, one Canon portable video recorder, three camelback water bags, one magazine carrier and assorted clothing. Although troops sustained casualties during the encounter, wounded personnel are receiving medical attention, while necessary evacuation arrangements are ongoing. Troops have maintained heightened vigilance and sustained exploitation of the surrounding area to prevent further attacks and recover additional items of operational significance. The successful repulsion of the attack underscores the combat readiness, resilience and determination of Operation HADIN KAI troops to defend their positions, frustrate terrorist offensives and progressively degrade insurgent capabilities across the North East. The Theatre Command remains resolute in sustaining aggressive, intelligence-driven operations to deny terrorists freedom of action, protect vulnerable communities and consolidate ongoing efforts to restore lasting peace and security across the region. COAS REAFFIRMS CRITICAL ROLE OF ARTILLERY FIREPOWER IN ENHANCING OPERATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the critical role of artillery firepower as a force multiplier in enhancing the operational effectiveness and combat readiness of the Nigerian Army. He stated this during the firepower demonstration of the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery (NACA) Vulcan Training Period 2026, Exercise VULCAN GLOW XII, held at the Ground Stand, Nigerian Army Training Area, Kachia, Kaduna on Friday, 16 October 2026. Represented by the Commander, Training and Doctrine Command, Nigerian Army (TRADOC NA), Major General Peter Malla, the COAS noted that effective artillery support, accurate fire delivery and seamless integration with manoeuvre arms were essential to strengthening combat capabilities and sustaining battlefield dominance. He explained that the exercise provided an opportunity to assess the proficiency of artillery personnel, the effectiveness of weapon systems and the responsiveness of fire support in contemporary military operations. The COAS further stated that the exercise was designed to identify capability gaps, refine training methodologies and guide decisions on the deployment and employment of artillery assets. He emphasised that operational readiness, a key pillar of his command philosophy, could only be sustained through continuous mission-oriented training, doctrinal innovation and the development of a combat-ready, mission-capable and adaptable force. He added that contemporary asymmetric threats, particularly in difficult and inaccessible terrain, demanded rapid response, accurate fire delivery and sustained operational capabilities. He therefore stressed the importance of maintaining the reliability, serviceability and operational effectiveness of artillery weapon systems to ensure successful mission accomplishment. The COAS expressed confidence that the exercise would enhance personnel proficiency, strengthen fire support coordination, address operational deficiencies and improve the overall readiness of artillery units. He urged commanders, instructors and participating personnel to translate lessons learnt from the demonstration into practical improvements in artillery training and employment. He also reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s loyalty to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He appreciated the President’s strategic guidance and continued support for the Nigerian Army while commending the Commander, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Major General John Adeyemo, the Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Artillery, and other personnel for their commitment to the successful conduct of the exercise. Earlier, the Commander, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Major General John Adeyemo, described the firepower demonstration as the major activity of the Corps’ annual gunnery training period. He explained that the exercise was designed to optimise the Corps’ capacity and capability for decisive joint fire support in joint and multi-domain operations. According to him, the exercise was structured to practise the Nigerian Army’s super camp concept and establish an integrated fire support cell involving relevant formations and units. He added that the training provided an opportunity to assess the performance of participating formations, identify areas requiring improvement and generate lessons to strengthen the Corps’ operational capabilities. Major General Adeyemo expressed appreciation to the COAS, the Commander, TRADOC NA, senior officers at Defence and Army Headquarters and other stakeholders for their continued support towards the professional development of the Corps. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery to upholding professional standards and enhancing its operational capabilities in support of the Nigerian Army’s mission. The firepower demonstration featured practical displays of artillery capabilities, marking the culmination of the NACA Vulcan Training Period 2026. The event also featured free medical services for members of the host community as part of the Corps’ commitment to strengthening civil-military relations and promoting community wellbeing. The successful conduct of Exercise VULCAN GLOW XII underscores the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery’s commitment to continuous training, operational readiness and the delivery of effective fire support in furtherance of the Nigerian Army’s operational objectives. GEORGE OKUPE Major Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations Headquarters, Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery 18 October 2026

PRESS RELEASE NAF DEALS SIGNIFICANT BLOW TO ISWAP, NEUTRALISES KEY TERRORIST FIGURES IN PRECISION AIR STRIKE The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), operating under the Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has recorded a significant operational success against terrorists in the Lake Chad region following a precision air strike on an identified terrorist hideout on 19 October 2026. The operation underscores the NAF’s sustained commitment to degrading terrorist networks, disrupting their logistics and enhancing security across Nigeria’s North-East. Preliminary post-strike assessments indicate that several prominent Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters were neutralised, including individuals identified as key figures within the group’s security structure and leadership Council, like JINDULLAH, reportedly the Chief Security Guard and confidant of Abu Saleem as well as ABUL KISSA, a member of ISWAP Shura Council. The strike also destroyed logistical assets, including boat engines and motorcycles, believed to support the group’s movement and operational activities. The operation demonstrates the NAF’s intense effort to conduct intelligence-led precision strikes against terrorist enclaves concealed within difficult terrain. By neutralising key operatives and destroying critical logistical resources, the strike delivers a significant setback to ISWAP’s operational capability, further constraining its ability to coordinate activities and threaten vulnerable communities. Commenting on the success, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, reaffirmed the NAF’s resolve to sustain decisive air operations against terrorist networks in support of ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability across the country. The Nigerian Air Force remains committed to working closely with sister Services and other security agencies to consolidate operational gains, protect vulnerable communities and advance efforts towards lasting peace and security in the North-East. bidexiii:OPERATION HADIN KAI SUSTAINS PRECISION AIR STRIKES, NEUTRALISES 103 TERRORISTS IN EIGHT-DAY OPERATIONAL PERIOD The Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), has sustained intelligence-led precision air strikes against Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists across the Joint Operations Area, neutralising a total of 103 terrorists and destroying several logistics hubs and storage facilities between 10 and 18 October 2026. The successes were recorded through the coordinated employment of Nigerian Army Aviation, the Nigerian Army Remotely Piloted Aircraft (NARPAS) Regiment and Air Component assets, reinforcing the military’s resolve to dismantle terrorist networks and deny them freedom of action The sustained air campaign comprised seven strikes against terrorist targets around Gudumbali in Guzamala Local Government Area (LGA) on 10 October, Badu in Monguno LGA on 11 October, Mairari in Guzamala LGA and an area east of Badu on 13 October, Duste Uku in Gombi LGA of Adamawa State on 16 October, and the alternate residence of Abu Saleem, the ISWAP Wali of South Lake Chad, in the Arina Woje area of Monguno LGA, Borno State, on 18 October 2026. These operations reflect sustained operational pressure on terrorist concentrations, leadership structures and logistics networks across the theatre. A significant success was recorded on 18 October 2026 when the Air Component conducted a precision strike against Abu Saleem’s alternate residence following intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance activities. Subsequent human intelligence (HUMINT) confirmed the neutralisation of Jindullah, a prominent ISWAP fighter reportedly serving as Abu Saleem’s chief security guard. The intelligence also confirmed the neutralisation of Abul Kissa, a member of the group’s Shura Council, alongside other prominent fighters within the targeted premises. The strike completely destroyed the targeted structure and key logistics assets, including nine boat engines and several motorcycles stored within the premises. It also disrupted terrorist concealment arrangements within the forested area, further undermining the group’s ability to use the location as a safe haven for its activities. Earlier, on 13 October 2026, the Guardian air asset tracked a group of 16 terrorists from the Mairari axis to a gathering of more than 100 terrorists accompanied by several motorcycles, approximately 23 kilometres east of Badu and 19 kilometres west of Monguno LGA. A subsequent precision strike on the gathering resulted in the assessed neutralisation of approximately 30 terrorists, while the extent of damage to the motorcycles remained unconfirmed. The other strikes during the period targeted terrorist elements and facilities around Gudumbali, Badu, Mairari and Duste Uku. Collectively, the seven strikes resulted in the reported neutralisation of 103 terrorists and the destruction of several logistics hubs and storage facilities, significantly disrupting the group’s operational capabilities and capacity to sustain its activities. The sustained successes underscore the effectiveness of coordinated, intelligence-led air operations in degrading terrorist capabilities, disrupting command structures and dismantling critical logistics networks. Through continued synergy among Nigerian Army Aviation, NARPARS, the Air Component and ground forces, OPHK remains resolute in maintaining operational momentum, denying terrorists safe havens and advancing efforts to restore lasting peace and security across the North East.
