According to YRC, six years after the protests, justice has yet to be secured for victims of the Lekki toll gate incident and others who died during the demonstrations.

The Youth Rights Campaign and its allies have announced plans to commemorate the sixth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests with a TikTok Live discussion on police brutality, democratic rights and economic hardship in Nigeria.

The YRC and allied organisations will on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, organise a TikTok Live event to mark six years since the #EndSARS protests, which drew thousands of young Nigerians into demonstrations against police brutality and demands for better governance.

The event, scheduled for 7 p.m. on the TikTok account @cruisenaija001, will be held under the theme, “Six Years After #EndSARS: Remembering the Victims, Defending Democratic Rights and Fighting for a New Nigeria.” Cruise Naija001 will moderate the discussion.

Speakers expected at the event include Francis Nwapa, National Secretary of YRC; Hon. Seyi Akinde of the Organising Committee of the #EndBadGovernance Movement in Lagos; Zikora Ibeh, Assistant Executive Director of Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa; Rasheedat Adeshina of the Joint Action Front; Ayoyinka Oni, a human rights activist and coordinator of the #EndSARS United Group; and Kamsi Ibeh, identified by the organisers as a survivor of the Lekki toll gate incident.

In a press statement dated October 18, 2026, and signed by YRC National Coordinator Michael Adaramoye Lenin and Nwapa, the organisation said the event would provide an opportunity to remember victims of the 2020 protests, discuss the state of democratic rights and examine the economic challenges confronting young Nigerians.

The statement recalled that the October 2020 protests began with demands for an end to police brutality and the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), but subsequently expanded into broader calls for accountability, good governance, dignity and improved living conditions.

According to YRC, six years after the protests, justice has yet to be secured for victims of the Lekki toll gate incident and others who died during the demonstrations.

The organisation also argued that the economic conditions that contributed to youth discontent in 2020 have worsened, citing rising fuel prices, increasing rents, high education costs, inadequate public healthcare and widespread unemployment.

YRC attributed these challenges to what it described as neoliberal capitalist policies, including privatisation, deregulation, subsidy removal and reduced government spending on public welfare.

The group maintained that such policies had placed additional pressure on ordinary Nigerians while benefiting a small economic elite.

YRC Calls for Renewed Youth Mobilisation

Beyond commemorating the anniversary, the campaign said the event would encourage young people to organise around broader economic and social issues.

The organisation called on Nigerians across the country and in the diaspora to participate in the online discussion, remember those who died during the protests and consider further collective action.

It also referenced youth-led protests in France as an example of international resistance to economic exploitation, arguing that Nigerian youths should similarly organise against the conditions affecting their livelihoods.

“The time has come to #EndCapitalism,” the statement declared, presenting the slogan as a central message of the planned event.

YRC urged students, workers, traders, artisans, civil society organisations and other members of the public to join the TikTok Live, share promotional materials and participate in discussions about the country's future.

The group said its campaign extended beyond police reform to include demands for economic change, social welfare and greater accountability from government.

The planned event comes six years after the #EndSARS protests became a major episode of youth-led mobilisation in Nigeria, bringing police accountability and governance issues to national and international attention.

Bro, if not because of the consequences of narrating what transpired, I would have given full details about what actually happened on this forum.

Better to let it slide. Everything happened for my korokoro eyes online
