Revelation 12:4 describes the dragon sweeping away a third of the stars of heaven, while verses 7-9 describe the war in heaven and the dragon's expulsion.

The traditional Christian interpretation presents this as Satan's rebellion against God.

This means the Devil was powerful enough to lead a multitude of heavenly beings into rebellion, yet Christians imagine him spending eternity punishing human beings for their own rebellion against God.

The irony is difficult to miss. The Devil himself is condemned for rebellion, but the popular Christian imagination turns him into the chief tormentor of other rebels. I think Satan is reasonable enough to organise a fiesta with his fellow rebels instead of judging them for the same rebellion of his.

Revelation 20:10, however, describes the Devil being thrown into the lake of fire. He is a victim of punishment there, not its ruler....
