The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned five suspects allegedly linked to the kidnapping of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and another passenger in Imo State.

The suspects were brought before the Justice Oputa State High Court in Owerri following their arrest during intelligence-led operations in Rivers and Abia states.

The arraignment marks a new stage in the investigation into the October 1 abduction, which raised concerns about the safety of young Nigerians travelling to begin their national service.

The suspects remain accused persons, and the allegations against them must be established through the judicial process.

Gunmen abducted prospective corps members on highway

The victims were abducted on October 1, 2026, near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.

They were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to their assigned NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when armed men intercepted vehicles conveying them along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway.

The abduction triggered a coordinated search operation involving security agencies, as families waited anxiously for news of their relatives.

The 20 prospective corps members and the other passenger were eventually rescued on October 7 during a security operation at Amakohia-Ubi in Owerri West Local Government Area.

The victims were subsequently taken to the DSS hospital in Owerri for medical attention and necessary checks.

Five suspects arrested in Rivers and Abia

According to reports, security operatives arrested the five suspects during intelligence-led operations conducted between October 10 and 14.

The operations took place in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Aba, Abia State, with the DSS working alongside the military, police and other security personnel.

Three other suspected members of the gang reportedly escaped during the operations with gunshot injuries.

Security agencies have continued efforts to locate the fleeing suspects and identify other people who may have been involved in the abduction.

However, the identities of the five arraigned suspects and the specific allegations against each of them were not detailed in the available report.

Ransom allegations raised questions

The abduction also generated concern after reports emerged that the kidnappers demanded money from the victims’ families.

Previous media reports said the initial ransom demand was reportedly ₦1 billion before it was reduced to ₦5 million per victim, amounting to ₦100 million for the 20 prospective corps members.

Some parents later said their families had raised money while trying to secure the release of their children. There were also reports that some contributions were subsequently returned.

However, Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Bosso said he was not aware that ransom had been paid, maintaining that pressure from security operatives forced the kidnappers to release their captives.

The circumstances surrounding the reported contributions and whether any money reached the abductors have not been conclusively established in the reports cited.

Security concerns remain after the rescue

Although the victims regained their freedom, the incident raised renewed questions about the safety of people travelling along major highways in southeastern Nigeria.

The fact that the prospective corps members were abducted while travelling to their orientation camps also highlighted the security risks faced by young Nigerians moving across states for national service.

The latest arraignment provides an opportunity for the court process to establish the alleged roles of the suspects and determine their criminal responsibility based on the evidence presented.

Security agencies are also expected to continue efforts to apprehend those who remain at large.

As for the victims and their families, the next important step is a transparent judicial process that establishes the facts, holds any proven offenders accountable and respects the rights of the accused.

The case also underscores the need for sustained security measures to protect travellers and prevent similar abductions.
