A shout-out to all those old friends who borrow money from us and then stop talking to us.

I feel that many people in Nigeria have become less creditworthy. In fact, money has become a true test of friendship. Once money enters a relationship, there is a good chance that the foundation of that friendship will be shaken, sometimes to the point of collapse.

A secondary school classmate reached out to me on WhatsApp. He said he urgently needed ₦100,000 and that it was a matter of life and death. To be honest, I wasn't financially comfortable myself, but I sympathised with him and decided to help a friend in need.

After sending the money, I jokingly told him that I was lending him a large sample of my blood. He laughed and promised to repay me within a month, and I agreed.

However, there was a red flag. The way he expressed his gratitude seemed unusual. He thanked me as though I had given him a gift rather than a loan. Immediately, I remembered the popular social media joke: "E get as person go thank you after you borrow am money, you go know say the money don go." I became slightly concerned, but ₦100,000 was still a relatively low-risk amount for me.

At the end of the month, he contacted me to explain that his father's wife was unwell and that there would be a delay in repayment. I remember thinking, "What does her illness have to do with the money I lent you?"

Nevertheless, I chose to be understanding and accepted his explanation in good faith.

Since then, I have not heard from him. He is no longer visible on WhatsApp, and all communication has ceased.

I don't feel particularly bad about the money. What disappoints me more is what our friendship apparently meant to him. Unfortunately, this wasn't the first time.

Another friend was experiencing difficulties in his marriage, and I lent him ₦300,000 to support a business idea. Within a month, the business had folded. To this day, I have received no meaningful explanation about the money or any indication of when it might be repaid.

Experiences like these sometimes make me wonder how much some people truly value friendship. It can be painful when someone is willing to sacrifice a genuine relationship over a relatively small amount of money.

One lesson I have learned is to distance myself from people who refuse to communicate after borrowing money. If you owe me ₦50,000 and deliberately avoid me, then I consider that amount the price of learning who you really are. In a sense, I have paid for that lesson, and you will never enjoy the same level of trust or access to my life again.

Money can be recovered. Trust is much harder to rebuild.

What has been your experience lending money to people in the current economy? Has it ended well for you, or have you faced similar disappointments? Share your thoughts in the comments.

My immediate elder brother borrowed some money from me recently, and even before I gave him the money,I knew he had a plan. And I already knew what he intended on doing,so I gave him the money after so much pleading and promising to pay back the following day. Lo and behold,I called my bro, called his wife but none of them took my calls grin. Next thing I saw was that my bro had equally blocked my number angry.

Omoh,I just maintained my steeze, cuz even my elder bro must had been expecting a fight from me but I just overlooked everything, and learnt my lesson. Tho he's been avoiding me since then but I no really too dey reason am again.

For one's peace of mind, lend money that you can afford to loose because to get the money back, it may be thug of war or you may not get it again.

Some Nigerians are looking for who to exploit or outsmart for their selfish gain.

Money is the biggest catalyst for most friendships, it reveals the true color of people.

I have a friend, who is also parasitic to me, he only wants to take, without giving, I cut him off.

That's why it's not good to lend money. Except to a person that has proven to reason like you and never jokes with his integrity.

I'd rather dash you the amount I can forget than lend and be following you up and down
Re: True Story: I Lost ₦400,000 And Two Friendships by Sisqoman(m): 9:01pm On Oct 22
Never lend someone more money than you can afford to lose. When you lend money, give only an amount that won’t put you in financial trouble if it is never paid back. Protect your peace, your pocket, and your relationships—lend only what you can afford to forget about.

Re: True Story: I Lost ₦400,000 And Two Friendships by NwaNimo1(m):
If someone ask me to lend them 100k i'm likely to refuse but 'dash' the person 10/20/30k - irrespective of how much i have at hand.

I don't want loans to people on my mind - i'd rather have memories of giving what i can or am willing to.

Should the person express ungratefulness for the amount, i cut the person off very immediately - and very irrespective of who they are!

From experience 76% of people asking to borrow have no intention of paying back - so i'd rather refuse but turn the request into an opportunity to cut off liabilities.

I don't want beggars/ingrates around me.

It's only the people that lend other people money and they don't pay back we will see on this thread.

No one will talk about all the money they have lent including from loan apps and close friends that they have refused to pay.

Never lend someone money that you can't afford to loose. ❌️❌️

Don't lend money at all koz there's no such thing as spare money or money you can afford to loose. Even 1 naira na money. Don't lend, just give.

My guy: Afar I fit see 100k from you.

Me: I no get o but send aza make I run you 10k.

Friendship preserved, peace of mind intact.

This is very similar to my own story. Mine was much more than 100k. My guy wey don japa go London buzz me say he desperately needs some pounds to pay for very serious family matter. He promised say he will surely pay back when they pay him at the end of the month. I look am say the guy dey London and must be working so no matter what, he go surely pay back. I asked for his Aza for London and wired the pounds sterling to him. Biggest mistake of my life embarassed

Like the OPs friend, he thanked me so well that I come dey wonder say wetin dey sup. End of month reach, I travel go London. The guy came to see me and do like say he don forget my money. Infact, na me pay for all our flexing for London. The guy just dey drink and chop like say he wan chop all my money before I comot London sad

Anyway, as I return back, two months pass and no word from the guy. Na so I start to remind am say guy, how far with my money na? He started giving me cock and bull story say him wife papa get cancer. This na rich old man wey get him own money and no send this my guy. He now started sending me pictures of the dying man for hospital bed. I tell am say Ogbeni, wetin concern me with these pictures? Pay my money jor angry

The guy come vex say I wicked say I no even pity am say him in-law get cancer. He now say make I give am another month say he go pay. Another two months pass and he no bother to pay. When I started to buzz am again say guy, how far na? He talk say I dey disturb am this early momo say he go block me o. I was like on top my money? shocked

Like play like play, the guy blocked me o and a year has passed since then. I am still blocked and I never see my money. When bad bad things start to dey happen to this kind person, he go talk say na devil handwork. Na wa o undecided

I lend a friend’ 20k back in 2023 and till date, he never call me again. Unbeknownst to him, I used to 20k to see if he valued our friendship. My plan was to ask him to keep the money if he tries to
pay it back, but he showed his true colours.
I’ve vowed never to lend money to anyone again. Make dem see me as bad person and avoid me. E better like dat!

I have been in the exact same situation as your friend.

I borrowed 200k from a close friend and things didn't go as planned, in fact i didn't recover from my financial slumber for years. During this time as much as i didn't want to lose our friendship, i tried avoiding him.

You have to understand that the person who is been owed would always ask from time to time his money, but what if you, the borrower is in a position where you cannot pay the money because you are dirt poor? The human feeling in that situation for the borrower is not try to be more friendly with you, because he is dying with immense guilt and embarrassment. He may be your bone man, but his feelings make him stay away. This may still happen even if you assure him not to worry about it.

I tried to stay friends with my friend, but i know that many times i avoided him and he knew the reason. Fortunately, he has an amazing level of maturity and so over the years, he wrote off the debt and it made me feel better gisting and sharing old memories with him. As soon as i got into a better position, i sent the money to him after 5 years.

Your friend is only acting that way because he's human. If you know him as a good person, then he still is a good person, but he is terrible guilty and embarrassed with the situation.

And for Lapo, don't go there at all, they will disgrace you and strip you of every dignity you have left. 😂😂
