Tinubu Questions Why Nigerian Doctors Are Leaving for Overseas

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed concern over the growing migration of Nigerian doctors and other medical professionals to foreign countries, calling for practical solutions to encourage them to remain in the country.

Tinubu made the remarks on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at the State House in Abuja after receiving an honorary fellowship from the West African College of Physicians (WACP).

The President questioned why medical professionals continued to leave for overseas despite Nigeria's need for their expertise. He urged the college's leadership to develop sustainable solutions to address the challenge.

The migration of healthcare workers has placed additional pressure on Nigeria's healthcare system, raising concerns about access to medical services and the workload of professionals who remain in the country.

Doctors and other healthcare workers often seek opportunities abroad because of factors including better remuneration, improved working conditions, modern medical facilities and greater career development opportunities.

Tinubu's remarks have renewed attention on the need to strengthen Nigeria's healthcare system and create an environment that encourages medical professionals to stay.

The challenge now is whether improved welfare, better hospital infrastructure and sustained investment in healthcare can help reverse the trend.

No matter what we do, doctors will continue to leave for their country of choice because that is where we train them for.

How many Community Health Officers have left the country after training?

Train doctors the way China train their doctors for China. From Barefoot Doctors.

Even India with almost the same "International Standard" mentality as Nigeria, keeps more doctors at home than Nigeria because they are trained for local remedies. Ayurveda barefoot doctors.

Apart from the children of Babalawo that were lured to medical schools through Primary Healthcare, Nigerian doctors specialize in "Abroad Diseases" taking overseas exams before they even graduate.

Simple answer - they make more money abroad with less efforts. They dont have to struggle with the insecurity challenges in Nigeria. Why would they want to come back and be kidnapped until ransom is paid? Let's put ourselves in other people's shoes sometimes.

Nigeria is among the top 10 countries of the world that pays doctor the least.
Nigeria is also among the top 10 countries with LOWEST MINIMUM WAGE.
Don't even Go far, just go to neighbouring counties like Ghana, Gambia etc and see how much doctors earn.

You can't pay well
You can't even equip the hospitals well
Living conditions is nothing to write home about and you expect people with functioning head to wait? What a joke!
