One of the frustrating parts of freelancing is completing a job and then having to chase the client for payment. Imagine spending hours designing a flyer, editing a video, building a website, or completing another client's project. You deliver the work, but the payment keeps getting postponed. Some clients are trustworthy, while others may take advantage of the fact that they already have the finished work. I've been thinking about how freelancers can better manage this situation, especially those working with clients who don't want to pay upfront. What approach has worked best for you when dealing with clients who delay payment? Do you collect full payment before delivery, request a deposit, or use another arrangement? |

It's all about setting up structure. You can make sure that the client makes a down payment of a particular percent of the money that he should pay for the project, like an "Advance payment" Then the client completes it after the job is done. Now, You can set this as a structure and let them know that working with you involves some certain terms and conditions. He or She needs to agree to it before you even decide to talk about getting the job done. You can make it a written agreement, where you categorically state the scope of the work, how much you charge, how payments will be made, how deliverables will be made available to the client and every other important thing involved. Whether you decide to collect full payment or part payment, the most important thing is that both of you are aware of the terms and consent to it. |

Agree with the advance payment idea. What has worked for me in similar situations is splitting the job into milestones, for example 50 percent upfront, then the rest due before the final files are released. Sending a short written summary of the scope and due dates by chat or email also helps, because it gives you a record if the client starts dragging their feet. For clients who keep delaying, a polite reminder on the due date followed by a firm deadline usually works better than chasing every day. |

DesignerWillie:You're absolutely right. Having clear terms and a written agreement from the beginning can prevent a lot of misunderstandings. I particularly agree with your point about how deliverables will be made available to the client. I think that's another important part of the process because even when payment terms are agreed upon, some clients can still delay payment after the work is completed. In your experience, do you usually send clients a preview of the completed work first, or do you hold back the final files until full payment is made? |

JeffWuStyle:The milestone approach makes a lot of sense, especially the part about releasing the final files only after the outstanding payment has been made. I think that last stage is where things can get tricky for freelancers, particularly when clients want to see the completed work before paying the balance. How do you handle that situation without making the client feel you're withholding their work or don't trust them? |

emkrayons:A preview that is useful but not fully usable has worked better for me than a flat 'pay first'. I send a watermarked sample, a short screen recording, or one finished section, and I say in the milestone note that the remaining files go out the same day the balance clears. Calling it the agreed handover step, rather than a trust issue, keeps the tone calm. I also offer a live walkthrough on a call so they can see the finished work on my screen, then I send the files once the payment shows. They still get to review before they pay, and I am not left with nothing if they go quiet. |

JeffWuStyle:This is a really practical approach. I like how you frame it as an agreed handover process rather than a matter of trust. The watermarked preview is especially useful because it allows the client to review the work while the final files remain protected. I'm curious, do you handle the preview, payment confirmation and final file delivery manually, or do you use a tool to manage the process? |
