Which State Has The Best Egusi Soup, And Who Truly Owns Egusi? by LocalBuka(op): 7:45pm On Oct 24
Nigerians can turn almost anything into a debate, but food arguments are particularly interesting because everybody suddenly becomes an expert.

So let's talk about egusi.
Which state makes the best egusi soup? Is it the Yoruba style, the Igbo style, or a version from another part of Nigeria that people rarely give enough attention?

Some people love egusi with well-formed lumps. Others prefer a thicker, more blended texture. Then there are the people who believe that the vegetables, palm oil, assorted meat, stockfish, crayfish and seasoning must come together in a very particular way.

But beyond the question of taste, there is another argument: who actually owns egusi?
Egusi is widely eaten across Nigeria, and its preparation varies between communities and households. Nigeria's food traditions are diverse, as documented by the National Institute for Cultural Orientation. That makes it worth distinguishing between a dish being associated with a community and claiming that the community is its only rightful owner.

Personally, I think we should be able to celebrate the different styles without pretending that everybody must cook the same way.

Let's hear your arguments:

Which state or ethnic group's egusi is your favourite?

Do you prefer fried egusi or egusi cooked directly in the soup?

Which vegetable must be present in your ideal egusi?

Is egusi the property of one ethnic group, or has it become part of a wider Nigerian food culture?

What is the one mistake that ruins a pot of egusi for you?

Please explain your choice. "My state is the best" is not enough evidence. Tell us what makes the soup special.
Let's have a proper food debate.

Every ethnic group's way of cooking Egusi is best for them, why do you want to shake this Egusi table everyone is managing?

I think easterners generally make the best followed by south southerners but the "baddest" egusi soup I've ever tasted was from a kogi girl while we were serving as corpers.

I can still remember and savour her lumpy tasty egusi soup like it's yesterday.

Egusi soup is a Yoruba invention

Nobody makes egusi like my mother and step mother especially when we have special events, with the gbure leaf and red oil. The ibo egusi is too whitish like baby's poo. Sorry, but if it works for them, good 👍

Igbo egusi, whitish? You must be mistaken, sir!
(That must be the SS version)

Just so you know, Igbo version of egusi soup is the most clothed, vibrant, aromatic egusi soup there is.
When it comes to making Igbo egusi soup, you have to bring your A game, otherwise, the soup go fall your hand.

Safe to say, in the land egusi soup, Igbo egusi soup is king 👑

What you just posted here is the traditional Yoruba egusi soup. Thank you for buttressing my point. Ibos don't use so much red oil in their egusi like the Yorubas. That's why it's whitish compared to Yoruba version. You people if you are igbo, have stayed too much around the Yorubas that you've been influenced so much in most things from fashion to language to food. Egusi soup itself is Yoruba.

"Traditional Yoruba egusi soup" indeed!

Aside obe efo, Yorubas are not known to use that much vegetables in their soups.

That picture I showed is exactly how Igbos cook their ofe egusi, with a good amount of proteins.
Igbos are known to use leafy vegetables a lot in their soups, with a enough palm oil.

Below is what a typical Yoruba egusi soup look like. The watermark is there to prove it.
(Someone whose tribe's soup look like this shouldn't call other tribe's soup baby's poo)

indeed. After googling egusi without vegetables. You tried well well grin

Yorubas have gbure, Tete, soko, amunutu and they use these leaves extensively in their soups. Why do you think most of you can't do without efo riro at your parties these days?
What you just posted is what ibo egusi looks like, whitish with bleached or little red oil. This is what ibo egusi looks like below, like baby poo. If it's red, you copied that from the original owners of the soup.grin
At least we both agree egusi soup is Yoruba and you copied it

Just like Kongo Egusi soup, you can put it in the museum. So beautiful! Looking at it alone, you wouldn't want to touch it for fear of marring its beauty.
