There was DSC (steel complex), @ Aladja, NNPC, was booming, SHELL, and many multinational companies were there, even the near-bye Bomadi/Burutu shipping repair dockyard was full of activities, NPA, port was relatively full of activities a well, it was a place where live was cool, enjoyable and prospects high, I could even recall the Burutu/Bomadi in the then Bendel state was to be the Apapa port of today....

Within the last 2 & half decades, all has been reduced to nothing, the town turning into a shadow of herself, where and how did all go wrong?......

WARRI, WAFFI, etc, etc..... the future generations need to start asking questions now!

No more regional government to help hide flaws of certain people. You forgot to add the various industrial estates that never materialized.

Even shell is currently relocating to either off shores or PH. Warri has never been this dry. Maybe it could be because of the excesses of our boys?

That's the point!!

Niger-Delta is the richest in terms of Natural resources, yet has the worst set of leaders. Sadly many blame FG for neglecting the region whereas they have with them the very ones holding them down from moving forward.

Look at Delta and Bayelsa state and tell me why those states should be as they currently are, but for the mediocre leaders who have held sway(Including GEJ).These visionless leaders are the cog in the wheels of progress of the region.

I think we should stop blaming our leaders for everything wrong even when mosquito bites you. It is evident that the violence in warri chased away investors. In warri, criminality has been legalized. Young boys do not want to go to school and better off their lives. Rather they prefer cash hand-outs from the govt and when this is not forthcoming they resort to kidnapping and disturbing the peace. Well I think warri wanted the companies out and the oil companies responded.

The problems started immediately after the creation of the mid west region. Sapele forest reserves were destroyed, the associated wood industry went down as a result. The industrial and commercial buoyancy of warri also started suffering

The truth of this matter was the war between the three native tribes of Warri. I will not mention the names for fear of being bashed. The issue actually degenerated into militancy after OBJ won 1999 elections and decided with Ibori to ignore the problem. Insecurity drove the major companies to port Harcourt. That's what happened.

But "warri no dey carry last nah "...
both the good ,the bad and the recent ugly OP is talking about.
Re: WARRI - Where Did It All Go Wrong? by ogb5(m): 5:24am On Jun 08, 2013
Warri fell because of several factors. The near constant attrition between the 3 major tribes was the most important factor. Remember a city divided against itself can not stand.

The second most important factor was the deliberate push of the federal government at a particular time to get the tribes to fight themselves. The fg Creating a local government and moving the head quarters back and forth between 2 opposing tribes was designed to cause war between the tribes and it worked greatly. They claim the divisive policy was to ensure the tribes do not come together and ask for resource control.

The 3rd reason while warri fell was the availability of competition. Port Harcourt took the oil companies while lagos took the trade opportunities. Federal companies in warri was made into a bed nest of corruption at a scale higher than what entails in other cities. The result was that it became cheaper for example to import through the lagos port and truck the goods to warri than to import through the warri port.

So warri fell because the people were divided, the federal government capitalized on that division to further divide them, war ensued and companies fled

You scored F9
Violence is in most parts of the country
Kidnapping happens more in aba than in warri why has aba not fallen
You said primitive? You can only compare delta state with the most educated states in Nigeria in terms of education. There are many states that believe that western education is sin, they have not gone under yet.
Lastly you are talking of bad govrs, who has a good govr in Nigeria? Stop hating Niger delta govrs, they are no worse than the average Nigerian governor. While the fg was sleeping it was the policy of Ibori's government that brought peace to warri when war was raging between 1995 and 1999

The crisis between Ijaw, Itshekiri and Urhobo destroyed all economic activities and forced all foreigners and indegenes out

The lack of economic activities brought aout Poverty and consequent militancy

Then the coming of democracy instead of empowering the people made them poorer

The niger delta leaders are no different from leaders from other ethnic group in nigeria.
Why didn't you use Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Edo as example. Are they not doing well?

We should understand that each city/town has its own perculiarities. Each is unique on its own. Because it happened in aba and she didn't fall doesn't mean the same should be expected in warri. Generally, violence is a destroyer anywhere its found.

It's quite intriguing that the best governors of the Niger delta states are not admired by people outside the region. Obj was really effective in painting the Niger delta govrs as devils. Ibori and alams still remain the best govrs to have ruled delta and bayelsa states

one way to remain in ur problem is not accepting it.

U won't accept it, u will blame others, u will point out who else are worst than u, and lastly, u will claim u are better and deserves best.

Violence was the root cause. The companies relocated to PH and Lagos.

Aba survived amidst the violence because it was the locals that made Aba thick, not expatriates. Aba became a ghost of itself for 6 months, but became lively again when things returned to normalcy. Nothing kills a city than violence.
