I am not an Igbo person but just you should know the Igbos are the most important and the most beautiful people in Nigeria you cannot compare a Yoruba or an Hausa man to an Igbo man.
The Igbos are very industrious and creative Nigeria knows this that is why they fought day and Night in the Biafra war to keep the Igbos in Nigeria.

There's a problem here. Do you mean Igbo ethnic group or Igbo speaking population or Igbo related ethnic groups?

If its Igbo speaking population, then Musiwa is probably right but if its ethnic Igbos then we should be talking about 10% and they are found in Egbema part of ONELGA and Oyigbo only.

Igbo related like Ikwerre, Ogba, Etche etc are roughly 50% or more.

Kind of a confusing statistic considering a good majority of any of those "Igbo related" groups identify as Igbo, and then there's the issue of what an "ethnic Igbo" even is.

@bolded. You are the one saying it. Here in Rivers State, everyone knows who Igbo is when the word is mentioned. Only Oyigbo and Egbema are Igbos in Rivers State and they consist barely 10% or less. When it comes to language then the population of Igbo speakers is clear majority.

Still doesn't explain away igbo identifying non-Egbema/and Oyigbo people in Rivers State, many of them public figures. Internally in Rivers, there may be an Igbo-migrator/Igbo-speaking dichotomy, which is not unique to Rivers State or even Igbo groups, or even Africa. The same even happens in Anambra with Onitsha indigenes/migrators, and that's supposed to be the 'archetypal' Igbo state. Doesn't rule out the detail.

me_for_you: Obigbo in rivers state is a 100% igbo town which wicked yorubas renamed oyigbo
You are correct, when Adekunle's 3rd marine commandos arrived Igbo speaking areas of present Rivers and whipped their asses and defences, in the push to 'Igbo heartland', they had to accept they are non Igbo to avoid the fate that befell their brothers in starvation.

The challenge is reorienting them now, because a whole new generation of these Rivers indigenes face serious emotional and psychological identity dysfunctional syndrome-always on the defensive- aggressively charging at other Nigerians in their denial of not being Igbo.

When other Nigerians encounter them in training colleges, offices and businesses, they only but feel pity for their dual/split identity-perceived Igbo but claims 'minority' all because of belonging to oil states.

This situation would have befallen the Aniomas- until their elders decided to support their racial kith and kins because their son Nzeogwu had a hand in the whole crisis. They paid the price-yes-in Asaba massacre by Murtala's troops, but they have put that in their stride and moved on. Today even with low oil resources, Delta Igbo account for three of Nigeria' top 10 richest citizens: Jim Ovia, Tony Elumelu and Peter Eloka Okocha.

My brothers, we need to reorientate our kiths in Rivers with the Igbo historical works such as T. Basden, Kenneth Dike, Elizabeth Isichei etc. We know the likes of Elechi Amadi- who made his name on the back of Igbo/Ikwerre history is part of the seeds of discord. If Obi Wali, Francis Ellah, Eze Rebisi and Eze Nwuche of Ekpeye were to have been alive and strong they won't allow this barefaced erosion of cultural ties to continue.

[color=#DC143C]I don't know what is the OP's motive behind this thread, but I'll like you to know that saying 80% of Rivers people are Igbo is like sweeping the numerical relevance of the Kalabari people and Ogoni people under carpet.
Are you talking of indigenes alone, if YES, then review your posts again.
Ikwerre people are in the majority but they range from 25% - 30% , other Igbo/Igboid groups joined together won't be more than 30%. So you have to tell us whom you group as Igbo.
And hey, I still want to remain where I am. Being a SSner don't deter anyone from being an Easterner too, afterall, we were once part of the old Eastern region.

There's no need arguing over whether your LG is igbo, ogoni or Kalabari..here are they

3)Ahoada west(akinima)..Igboid
4)Akuku Toru(abonnema)..Ijoid
5)Andoni(ngo)..Ijoid
6)Asari Toru(buguma)..Ijoid

21)Oyigbo(afam)..Igboid

From the data,we see that ogoni has 4 LG,igboid clans(ikwerre, ekpeye, ndoni etc) has 9 LG whilst Ijoid clans(kalabari, okrika, bonny etc) has 7 LG.
On the map,its continous as per the ethnicities except in the Ibani communities of bonny and opobo where creole igbo is spoken due to the resettlement there of large number of unsold igbo slaves after abolition of slavery in addition to the establishment of the Great Opobo state by Jubo Jugbogha(Jaja) in 1870.

Such a foul statement! If you claim ikwerre's are igbo, why don't you also say the ogoni's are akwa ibomites because they decend from them, or the delta igbo's and delta yoruba's. Rivers state is not independent union of various ethnicities and should not to affiliated with any insane biafran republic. Ikwerres are decendants of the ibo's but today they are rivers people and will. Never associate themselves with the igbos. The united states is a union of european decendants. So is it a european nation? Take not!!

OP is drunk as usual.

Oyigbo, Etche, Omuma and ONELGA (though Ogba claim they migrated from Benin, that's why they have Oba of Ogbaland) are 90% Igbos which doesn't even give you 15% of Rivers population.

The Ikwerres (PHALGA, OBALGA, KELGA and EMOLGA) has also claim they originate from the Ekpeye and Ogba ancestry all traced to Benin. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ikwerre_people

So, OP your fact that Rivers State is 80% Igbos doesn't hold water.

You expose ignorance of Igbo history. You don't know that there is no singular migration. The Igbo story is one of different migratory accounts. Archaeological finds show that the Igbo areas of Nri and Nsukka have been inhabited for over 5,000 years. And these are where various Igbo groups departed in search of better environment and re-routed to their present locations. This could explain why the progenitors of the various Igbo clans and ethnic blocs bore Igbo names.

Eluwa in his book: 'Ado-Na-Idu: History of AIaigbo Origin', shows why cultural and linguistic differences. The people Aniomas (Delta Igbo) Onitsha, Ikwerre, Ogba, Ndoni etc claim to have migrated along with the Edo, hence the cultural and lingual similarities.

The Nsukka Igbo, Ezza etc claim to have migrated through present-day Benue State.

The Ogboos-Ohafia, Abiriba etc trace their root to Biase in present Biase Cross River.

Look at what Wikipedia says about the Ikwerre:
"The Ikwerre people are of Nigerian Igbo extraction. This is an unnecessarily debated point which has no economical or present-day relevance. Scholars believed the then Ikwerre dwellers refuted their origin of being Igbo as an escape strategy from the Nigerian Army during the Biafrian Civil War. A claim which was supported by Ikwerre being recognized as a separate group only in the Nigerian Constitution after the Civil war and in 1979."

The classification of Ikwerre as an Igbo dialect is a subject of controversy among some in the Ikwerre community. Most publications classify it as an Igboid language. Based on lexicostatistical analysis, Kay Williamson originally asserted that the Ikwerre, Ekpeye, Ogba, Etche and Igbo languages belonged to the same language cluster, but were not dialects.[3] Subsequent studies by both Williamson and Roger Blench concluded that Igbo, Ikwerre, Ogba and their sister languages apart from Ekpeye form a "language cluster" and that they are somewhat mutually intelligible.[4] There are indications that the Ikwerre society was bilingual even in the pre-colonial Nigeria, with people speaking other Igbo dialects and Ikwerre.

Opobo as everybody knows was founded on andoni land by Jubo Jugbogha whom the brits nicknamed JAJA..he was a slave from around orlu in imo state and was originally domiciled in bonny before leading his house eastward to settle at the mouth of imo river, calling his new home opobo.
Creole igbo is spoken in both opobo and bonny...and this was a conseQuence of the abolition of the slave trade which forced thousands of igbo slaves from the hinterland to settle on the coastal areas around bonny, ogoni, opobo and andoni areas.this is history or would you also argue about things that happened before your grannies were even born? undecided
