LAGOS 2015: In Search Of Another Fashola by Ayekotoo(op): 12:53pm On Oct 21, 2014
By Uthman Giwa

Since the advent of Nigeria’s democratic odyssey in 1999, one can safely argue that no public office holder or state governor has enjoyed so much popularity or admiration as Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State.
Though he didn’t set out to have this kind of movie star cult-following among Nigerians, his relentless pursuit of the ideal, pervasive and profound achievements, despite a drastic shortfall in federal revenue allocation, and catholic devotion to bettering the lives of Lagosians have earmarked him as a primus inter pares.
The fact that he doesn’t make a song and a dance of these achievements further prove that he is an exception in a political clime where governors celebrate paying the salaries of civil servants. Really, it is hard not to love BRF as he is fondly called by Nigerians of all ages and races and religions.

A gangling force of nature, Fashola’s gregarious charm, razor-sharp intellect and the innate gravitas he brings to governance make many analysts and social commentators compare him to the charismatic American President, Barrack Obama.
Interestingly, the comparisons are hinged on their trajectory and individual characteristics.
Both are trained lawyers serving their second terms in public office. Both are southpaws, keen sports fans (Obama plays basketball and doesn’t mind getting bloodied on the court while Fashola plays football avidly) and have incredible appeal among youths.
That is where the similarities end. While Obama rode into office on a tidal wave of genuine love and desire for change, Fashola was the anonymous, self-effacing technocrat railroaded into the maelstrom of Lagos politics by his former principal, the former Governor of Lagos,
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Interestingly, while Obama’s rating in the eyes of Americans has plummeted in the last one and a half years, Fashola has been enjoying stratospheric adulation wherever he turns whether in Lagos or Lafia and everywhere else.

Oratorical appeal

Yet, it is not because Obama has lost his mojo and oratorical appeal; it is just that Fashola’s type is rare in this clime. His dynamic insight and robust foresight have placed him as a leader who never flounder in torrid times. Going forward, that is the kind of leader Lagos State needs, not tentative, ill-prepared also-rans. Lagos is Nigeria’s most important state. And one does not need higher education to understand this. It is the socio-economic nerve-centre and heartbeat of Nigeria. It is home to Nigeria’s second largest population after Kano, according to contrived census figures but Nigerians know better.
Lagos is too important to be left in the hands of charlatans or inordinately ambitious politicians whose only aim is to feather their own nest and that of their cronies at the detriment of millions of Lagosians. It is therefore very interesting to see the horde of aspirants jostling to succeed Governor Fashola.
As at the last count, there must be over thirty potential candidates across the major political parties jostling to win their party’s ticket.

I'm sure there are more than enough capable hands within the APC with the likes of Ganiyu Solomon, femi hamzat, abike dabiri, yemi ikuforiji but then by rotation it should be turn of my Ikorodu division to produce the next governor of lagos state based on the IBILE(ikeja, badagry, ikorodu, lagos island and epe) strata that makes up lagos with all other divisions already taking their turn in Alausa. This put Ganiyu Solomon in good stead and also Abike Dabiri those two are our biggest gladiator in Ikorodu.

Would have loved a Jimi Agbaje ticket too but his decamping to PDP is a political miscalculation cos I'm not even sure he will get the PDP ticket with Koro on the loose ready to kill and clear any obstacle in his path to getting same ticket.

In all Lagos is in safe hands but PDP shouldnot bother about campaigning in Lagos cos we are strictly progressives.

A man that couldn't successful run his pharmacy with less than 25 employees wants to run Lagos State lmao. Go ask his workers how he dosent even pay salary on time. I remember how Fashola used that point to finish him during debate grin, yet since that time he hasn't achieved anything new

This forum is open to everyone you can make reasonable or stupid utterance and be judged accordingly.

If una like go and bring peter obi to contest as governor of lagos since igbos makes up 95% while other non indigenes makes up the 5% and we the indigenes are just 0% of our own state.

He was already a SAN, what drug has Agbaje's pharmacy ever produced? No one even knows the name of the pharmacy, you can't even list the pharmacies in Nigeria and add his. This is a man who was born with sliver spoon and yet has achieved nothing. A man who cannot successful pay his employees even with the help of Dads money has nothing to offer Lagos State. No be jingle and swag they use to govern grin

you should be concerend about how to kick out Governor Thief-Odour Orji and Governor Martin Elechi. Both of them are PDP and they'v turned Abia state and Ebonyi state into a cesspit.

The SE is suffering from the paucity of competent Governors, no thanks to PDP

FASHOLA IS BAD NEWS DISGUISED IN INTENSE PROPAGANDA

With the recent holier than thou attitude being put forward by Gov Fashola, It has become pertinent that we remind ourselves what manner of man he has been in the past 7.5 years.

1. It is on record that Tinubu is one of the most corrupt individual this country ever produced who went on an accumulation spree of every viable state asset. However, I wonder how a 'non corrupt' Fashola can seamlessly work with an extremely corrupt Tinubu for 8yrs without friction while they both accumulate all state assets to their personal names. Two cannot work together except they agree. It seems Tinubu accumulated more state resources under Fashola's tenure than his own tenure. One can categorically conclude that Fashola is either more corrupt than Tinubu or just a plain dummy/ foot soilder

2. There is still no justification to installing toll plazas on existing roads. The Lekki- Epe expressway that serves the fastest developing area of lagos state should have received fair and untolled attention but out of the dirtiness of heart of the corrupt duo of Fashola/ Tinubu.... it was tolled to their own company. When the masses trooped out to protest against it, Fashola's touts were unleashed on them even to the extent of death of a protester. If every state governor tolls roads which is a basic necessity like Fashola did..... ours would have been a mortgaged country

3. Till date, Fashola have refused to open up the state books to the public consistent with the Freedom of information bill adopted at the federal level. He has consistently and categorically refused to be accountable. For the records, LASG with monthly IGR and allocation of 29B and 19B respectively have managed approximately 4.5trillion in 7.5yrs. Unaccountability is the hallmark of irresponsible leadership.

4. How on earth can a sane governor deport non-indigenes within same country at the wee hours of the morning and dump them under a bridge. Every Nigerian indigene has the right to live in an part of the geographical location called Nigeria without a visa. It is also on record that this inhumane act have been carried out by just on governor in our history. .. which is Fashola. This act currently ranks as the highest breach of human rights in Nigeria.

5. Fashola adamantly approved a 1000% increase in the school fees rates for LASU students without any corresponding increase in wage rates. It took wide spread protest and unending strikes that forced the govt to its knee. This is the record increase of school fees in Nigeria and ranks the height of insensitivity

6. Lagos roads are repaired at 2billion/ km by the crony companies of Fashola/ Tinubu. Better roads are built allover the country at lesser rates. Height of lootocracy

The ease at which he criticizes the central govt without acknowledging any single achievement by same govt makes him a mere opposition figure who stands for nothing but mere propaganda.

Now I ask..... What are the highlights of Fashola's govt?Lagos was a federal capital and Tinubu's govt was the height of hopelessness and such any any road repaired receives lots of hype. What key achievement would Fashola be remembered for?

Welcome back desola. Fashola is an islander to some extent, badagry had jakande, ikeja had tinubu, epe had otedola so you will agree with me that awa omo eluku meden meden lokan.

Really I'm not perturbed about where the governor comes from cos performance overshadows sentiments anyday. GEJ is from Bayelsa, is the life of an average ijaw man on the street better for it?
