THE Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Juliu Okojie, on Monday, said “only University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and six others have 60 per cent academic staff with Ph.D qualification.”

The NUC scribe disclosed this in Ilorin, Kwara State, at the first International Conference of UNILORIN Postgraduate Students’ Association (POGSASS), held at the university.

Okojie, who was represented by Professor Akaneren Essien, Chairman, NUC Standing Committee on Private Universities, commended the university authorities for placing high premium on both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

He said the last review of Nigerian universities conducted by the NUC revealed that seven out of about 118 universities in the country had 60 per cent of their academic staff with Ph.D certificates.

The NUC boss advised the management of the university not to rest on its oars, but strive to attain a minimum 80 per cent Ph.D qualification academic staff strength.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, said the university accorded utmost priority to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The vice chancellor said the management of the university was working round the clock to justify the school’s popular slogan, “Better By Far.”

Academic excellence and after-school productivity is not by the number of lecturers who hold Ph.D as qualification. Infact, gone are the days when students' excellence hinges directly on lecturers impartation. In recent times, students who are brilliant from pre-primary, primary and post-primary tend to still stand out (with personal efforts and determination) in the varsity; in most cases of which these redundant lecturers and schools shoulder the glory. In sum, the more the number of Ph.D holders (as lecturers), the more the corruption and unfair turture (mass failure) of students. IT(Ph.D criterium) CAN ONLY WORK WELL OUTSIDE THE SHORES OF NAIJA.

That tells you why The Prestigious University Of Ilorin, is better by far.

I am so surprised and digusted at this comment. A Phd holder is someone that has gone through academic rigour. Developed nations rely on the output of phd's holders to stay ahead of their competitors. It is very sad that future leaders have this kinda of mindset. It is important to know that quality of Nigerisn education will continually depreciate until we address the quality of lecturers. What u don't have, u can't give.
