Prebuilt rigs are fine for PC gaming. All you need is to add a graphics card and you're good to go.

Make sure you buy at most a core i5 (quad core). Don't waste your money on an i7, that's serious overkill for gaming purposes and the extra money can be better spent on the GPU. The Xbox one and PS4 both use pathetic netbook CPUs that aren't even close to an i3 in terms of power, so an i5 is more than enough for the foreseeable future. If you're short of cash, you can get an AMD processor which is much cheaper than Intel. Plus AMD have the advantage of having more CPU cores so they'll cope well on games that are designed around the new consoles before being ported to PC.

Get the most powerful graphics card you can afford from the latest generation. If you have crazy money you should get the nvidia geforce 970 for about $320. It easily runs the most demanding games at 1080p/60fps and produces very little heat so you can overclock it and it'll last longer than hotter cards if you use the default clockspeed. Even the cheaper cards like the nvidia 750Ti and the AMD R9 270 still outperform the new consoles and they cost relative peanuts.

Oga, abeg, more reccomends. The best I could find locally (within my budget ie, which is at most a (paltry) 200, but about 150 is what I'd be happier with), ie laptops strictly, come armed with geforce 850M cards. At reasonable pricing too. But I wonder if you know of a places locally, yet to have discovered the joys of the internets, where I could find, say, 860+ cards at reasonable pricing

Or should I just get a powerful, somewhat multipurpose, desktop? I do have an i7 laptop and I'm the very definition of a 'power' user, so even it struggles considerably from time to time. Perhaps getting a work machine then switching using the laptop just for demoing, etc would be the way to go for me (I do work mostly from home). I would need at least an i5 (but likely more) GPU goodies and if possible and an SSD for the windows partition (so not necessarily a big one). Would a desktop with such stats cost too much? Any ideas as to local options, or am I stuck with Amazon? Do you have a gaming rig you have on some sort of wishlist that's less than 200k (or 150, better sef)?

Thanks

Naaah... reviews overhype it.

My friend has a 4k setup... its 2 Radeon 9 280x each costing roughly $350 and a Samsung 4k monitor for $1200. (these are South African prices )

He nails every game at ultra on 4k including Crysis 3 and Metro LL (those are intense).

Below are real pictures... check those 2 cards and then the whole rig in our LAN party setup.

Are you related to Ludger, Viktor et al?

Best JRPG on the PS3, and by a country mile, IMO. That is my currently playing. And I'm taking my sweet time to soak it all in.

Yeah the nemesis system might be the next step in the evolution of gaming. It will be be a cool addition to gameplay mechanics in sandbox or RPG games.

Since you already have a capable laptop, my advice is to build a desktop. Its far cheaper to get a powerful one than a gaming laptop. 200k is over $1000 and can get you a monster PC is you pick the right parts. Even a $400 PC outperforms both new consoles so you have more than enough cash to build something that will satisfy you for years to come. You can use this build guide to give an idea of what you might need. The only thing is that it mainly recommends AMD CPUs because of price/performance ratio and you might need something more powerful for your work. If you're doing say video editing or something very CPU intensive, then you might want to spring for an Intel i5 or i7.

As far as getting all this stuff locally, I advise you to forget about that unless you want to pay double. Plus Nigerians mostly sell outdated stuff anyway.Shop for the best prices on Newegg, tigerdirect and Amazon. Its now easy and affordable to ship things down here using services like MyUS.com and shoptomydoor.com so you shouldn't have any problem.

Well, that links a little ridiculous. Even after slapping on the SSD and superior gpu augments, the i5 "the end all" option, and an 'end all' option vetted for by an active reddit community, still comes up to just about N150k. Only thing I'm undecided about is if should I go for the similarly priced geforce 960 (if compatible with board, ie) rather than the AMD... Hmmm, decisions...

It also seems like if used prudently etisalats 'unlimited' plan should be able to download ~10gig for under N1,500. Still a bit expensive, but at least saner than the drivel our telcos so graciously usually offer us. (Don't particularly blame them though, the greedy politicians/authorities that should be on top of this on the other hand... [s]Either ways, if pushed, there are perhaps other ways to get bandwidth[/s].)

Just saw Bioshock Infinite for something like $7 on steam. I wonder if it works with accelerators like IDM? With PS+ for instance, if a download fails, it fails. All that data down the drain. No attempts to fix just the broken bits, so risky attempting large downloads with little resources (eg, I do have bioshock on my account, but likely not going to risk it even after coming across the etisalat offer). Torrents are frankly the best option for files of these sizes. But of course, I'm yet to try out steam. Hopefully it's more stable/flexible than PS+

Anyways, adding all that up and assuming stable internet, I come up with getting the most visually stunning version of bioshock, legally, for less than N2,500 (minus rig price of course, but rig not meant for just gaming. A lot of virtualization, for instance, will be done). And most of that expense down to our silly data plans.

Reasonable. So, PC mastah race, here I come. I suppose

And yes, only in 9ja would some numbskull pay over 200k for a freaking iPad...Kayi
Re: What Game Are You Currently Playing? by EvilBrain1(m): 11:04am On Oct 29, 2014
^^^ You don't need a download manager, Steam downloads are rock solid and I've never lost a single kilobyte. My laptop once died while I was downloading one huge game. I bought a new one, copied the steamapps folder over, logged into Steam and the download continued like nothing had happened.

Also if you think games are cheap now, just wait till the winter steam sales start. And there's still Humble Bundles, key sellers and other places to get cheap games. I now have over 90 games on steam and the most I've ever spent is $9.99 for the entire half life series. Even if you are paying full price at launch, PC games still commonly cost $10 less than their console versions and you don't pay any premium to resellers or for shipping. Then there's the free online gaming and cloud saves that Sony and Microsoft nickel and dime you for.

When I tell the filthy console peasants that PC gaming is cheaper, they don't believe. But once you join the master race you'll wonder how you were wallowing in the mud for so long.

Depends on your location. I've gotten speeds of more than 12mb/s on both my spectranet 4G and MTN somewhere in abuja. MTN is more expensive for me but far more reliable than spectranet. Both options are very good.
