Good evening programmers and computer gurus in the house.

I'm interested in starting a forum just like nairaland with a focus on a narrow niche. I contacted someone who promised to help me out with the following conditions:

1. That I host it with him.
2. That I will not have access to the hosting account but will have access only to the ADMIN section only.
3. That he won't transfer the script to me until after sometime.

Do you think it's a good thing? What are the disadvantages of this deal? I'm a novice but won't want to make a mistake I will regret later.

i suggest u dnt agree with his terms... Who is even funding the thing anyways and who brought up the concept?

Don't do what you may later regret except you have a writen document signed and with a lawyer getting involved, besides who is going to be doing the funding?

Cutehector4u and cbrass, I have the idea and was looking for a person to help me develop the forum. I'm also responsible for the finance,I only contacted him to help me design it and I will pay him for the service.

How the above conditions came to be is on the issue of his charges. He said if I just want the script, he will give me at 2x but if I want him to host it for him using his host,he will give me the total package at half of that amount plus the above conditions. I have not seen him before nor know him in person.

pls dont go into deal with him pls....

Whoever owns the hosting account and domain name own pretty much everything admin is nothing he can just lock u out when the forum makes money

you are financing everything and yet you still want to be an admin for what you are paying for.i don't know maybe there is still somethings you guys have agreed uppon but this is not worth the stress.if you don't pay for it, who will

Sounds like someone is asking for a free hosting... If this is true, you will probably loose your site. I think web hosting is now fairly cheap in Nigeria.

I just wanted the code and host it with Hostgator cos most Nigerian hosts are unreliable but he told me he will charge me 2x but if I host it with him with the conditions above,he will charge me x amount.His host is bluehost and I later understood he wanted to play smart because he knew I was a novice.

You seem to have problem with my comment above buddy, no offence, anyone sensible will understand what I mean. And yes I have read your post and the comments made by the others. If you really need help, being rude would not lead you anywhere, especially in this industry.

Perhaps you could have composed your post so that we understand exactly what happened between you and the other guy instead of metaphorically writing.

Yes you can host with who ever you like, but I completely disagree with you that Nigerian web hosts are unreliable. You just can't tie every company with same brush you see?

Like you've got enough advice already.
