Wednesday, November 5, 2014 [size=18pt]On Being a Positive Realist[/size] "Finally, brothers [and sisters], whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things."1 About mental illness: Fortunately, it is accepted today as an illness perhaps more than ever before. In the past, mentally ill people were criticized, condemned, rejected, and even accused by some uninformed people of having demons. I don't know any easy or simple answers to help such sufferers, except to assure them of our love and acceptance. Medication helps many, but not all. It's the same with psychological counseling. It, too, helps many, but not all. I have two family members who are bipolar, but as long as they stay on their medication, they do very well. With my grown son who is bipolar, I'm thankful that the medication he is on has helped him cope very well. Regardless as to whether he is up or down, I constantly assure him that I love him devotedly. But what I've also done to help is to encourage him to try to change his thinking so he will see that he is living with a challenge—rather than as a problem. If you have a toothache, positive thinking is pretty much impossible. This is why I like to think I am a positive realist. If you are a positive realist and have a toothache, you will get to the dentist as quickly as you can. A positive realist sees his setbacks and problems as challenges that, with hard work and commitment, can be risen above and overcome. It has been well said that every one of us either has a problem, lives with a problem, or is a problem. If you are living with a discouraging situation, try to think in terms that you are living with a challenge—not a problem, and with God's help and that of others where needed, you will do your best to rise above your challenges and become a better, healthier and more fulfilled person. And for those who suffer from mental illness, let those of us who are not so afflicted remember God's Word which says, "Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone."2 Suggested prayer: "Dear God, please help me to learn how to harmonize my thinking with Your Word, and in so doing turn all my problems into challenges and with Your help rise above and overcome them. And help me always to understand and 'encourage the timid, take tender care of the weak, and be patient with everyone.' Thank You for hearing and answering my prayer. UjSizzle:2011? That's a long time ago. I enjoyed the camp. I hated the early morning marching and still do. I just hate marching. I loved the boring lectures and was at the clinic often in addition to being a Red Crosser. I was initially posted to a secondary school in Ohimini, I rejected it. The name alone got me scared. I didn't even visit the place. Lolz. Then NKST Gboko rejected me before I had my way with Federal Medical Centre Wadata, Makurdi. Where were you posted to? |

Closest spot to Agatu (did you hear about Agatu's mosquitoes? ) Was on the verge of getting my redeployment letter signed when I decides I just might love the small village after all. So I stayed, but worked my PPA from an interior primary school to the local govt council. Then went on to offer tutoring services to schools around for free....on almost everything seriously---teaching, exams coaching, singing competitions, and all those development talks lol. Then I visited Agatu twice for rural rugged evangelism (zonal and stat), bathed little children,braided hairs, took children classes, sang in the state choir,caught a cold, got soaked in rain,experienced mosquitoes that could pierce through jungle boots,had my allergies kick in lol. It was wonderful!! I hope you enjoy serving ![]() |

UjSizzle:There are some places with names capable of shattering your mental strength to do the so-called serving of our fatherland. To some extent, I worked with names. Lol. The texture of the sound in the names helped me decide, to an extent, where I will not go. Lol. I can recall a commander telling us the capability of the bad boys in Agatu. I don't mean the mosquitoes. The cultism and the effects on the community. Immediately, I ruled it out. Names like Vandakia(I don't know if I got it right), Agatu, Wanume, Konshisho, lol., were upon hearing ruled out. You seem to have a nack for a lot of things. What did you study and how do you learn? So far, it's been good except for my landlady who is trying to train some adults. |

@Reyginus Yeah I get what you mean. When I got my letter I actually fought to hold back my tears But I'm really good at adapting...very quickly actually and finding something to love about stuff. They were really nice people in that village; I'm still in touch with a number of people. I also heard the Agatu story and the state of living there was really bad. The youths were just misguided and frustrated from years of bad governance. Can you imagine they didn't even have electricity? I mean transformer/wiring....nothing at all, no public transportation, financial institution etc. That was poverty personified there. I actually had to give away 60% of my clothes. It's sad. But before I passed out, things were beginning to get better though. They really need Jesus, education and liberation from themselves in that place. I've never seen a people so averse to development before. Studied economics, don't know what you mean by "how do I learn" ![]() |
