My name is Ola from Abuja, it's with great sadness I'm writing this piece, why are we so tribalistic and sentimental in nature? why do we see other tribes/ethnic groups as the enemy?
As many of you can see through my profile that I recently joined this forum, but despite the fact that I've spent a little time here, going through a lot of posts in culture and politics sections of this forum, I've come into conclusion that the reason why this country is like this today is because of our hatred for each other, tribal and religion sentiments and our bias nature to the truth which all leads to corruption and various problems we're facing.
Now the question is why can't there be peace, why can't we love each other, why do we keep reminiscing about the misdeeds in the past and use it to act against each other, all this questions makes me sad and very sad.
I am using this medium to call on all fellow Nigerians to embrace themselves and be done with all this religion and tribal sentiments, that's when peace will reign in this great nation and I hope to see changes in those sections and other forums with the way we reason and pass judgement.
Thank you all for your time.

It might not tally ooo, but let me post one of my posts as a response to a similar update like this here.

Well, I started by saying tribalism is killing us, and I won't withdraw it. Its glaring in our body language. But if our politics and govt is to be built on dis, I pity d youth and I pity d future generations also, because everything is documented and it is likely passed on. But until we realize that dis is a big problem in dis country, I Fear For Us

I really think this is rooted in our gene, and it will take serious formatting to purge it out of us. #IMightBeWrongTho

why are you advising me to stay off from doing my part to stop or reduce it? Are you a negativist? Do you think it's a social norm?

As long as you don't mention to me that you can win election without igbos just like back in 1993 cool

I want everyone to know that I'm not talking about politics/winning elections here, my message is very clear.
Positive contributions and solutions are welcome. Thanks.

Tribalism has been in existence since the british annexed various parts and tribes, came up with Nigeria and created a monolithic "North" to lord over the south. The North via its first modern king the sardauna of sokoto learned the tactic of divide and rule which has kept the south and middlebelt fragmented till date using tribalism and other factors.

Why it is so pronounced these days is because our politicians are intentionally poking at our fault-lines to alter perceptions and tribalise the polity ahead of the 2015 elections. Remember when disgraced ex governor Nyako went to america to give a silly speech about igbos?

As per nairaland the politicians have demented and desperate agents who will do anything for money. For instance Eko Ile, an A.C.N (now APC) supporter who years ago bandied the shameless propaganda that only igbos criticise fashola's lagos because they hate yorubas. Eventually it became obvious that the clown and his hungry cohorts were full of crap but the damage had been done.

Was it carpet crossing that made Zik write tribalistic articles in his newspaper even before independence?

If you really want to know why tribalism is so strong in Nigeria, lets look at this historical example. In 1966, a group of officers some of who are Igbos (not mostly Igbo as revised Nigerian history would tell us), some middle belt, Niger delta and Yoruba committed the first coup. This was strictly a millitary affair. But During the counter coup which was a northern coup, they killed all Igbo officers and millitary men. But like Chinua Achebe said, If it had stopped there, it would have been seen as another tragic event in the Nigerian military history but the fact that the coup extended to innocent civilians on the street going about their daily business to the point of slaughtering about 50,000 people within weeks and nobody saw any problem with it except for few individuals shows that Nigerian tribalism is almost genetically ingrained. So TRIBALISM will live forever as long as Nigeria exist because that is the foundation it stands on.

The seeds of tribalism were sown pre-independence in Nigeria and was harvested in the coups of 1966 thereon.

To the OP:

Human beings are conditioned by thousands of years of evolution.
Why don't we have natural wings and fly like the birds in the sky?
Why do rich people marry only the rich?
Why did most blacks vote for Obama?
Why did most whites vote against Obama in 2 elections?
Why do some country want to quit the European Union ?
Why doesn't the ottoman or Hungarian empire exist today?

It seems that you have not gotten the memo.
You are fighting nature.
Like Birds flock together.
We are not the same and we are a different people .
You can blunt it the so-called tribalism with education and social justice, but you can never be rid of it.
In Nigeria's case as with the Austria-hungarian/ottoman , it will always have the same ending

War.
So get ready.

Thank you oduastates for your contribution, some of your points are right, I don't believe that war is the answer though.
What you sees as norm might not be.
I believe that this's not a fight with nature but the one with absurd.
